THE UNSTOPPABLE HUMAN SPECIES
In The Unstoppable Human Species, John J. Shea explains how the earliest humans
achieved mastery over all but the most severe, biosphere-level, extinction threats.
He explores how and why we humans owe our survival skills to our global
geographic range, a diaspora that was achieved during prehistoric times. By
developing and integrating a suite of ancestral survival skills, humans overcame
survival challenges better than other hominins, and settled in previously
unoccupied habitats. But how did they do it? How did early humans endure long
enough to become our ancestors? Shea places “how did they survive?” questions
front and center in prehistory. Using an explicitly scientific, comparative, and
hypothesis-testing approach, The Unstoppable Human Species critically examines
much “archaeological mythology” about prehistoric humans. Written in clear
and engaging language, Shea’s volume offers an original and thought-provoking
perspective on human evolution. Moving beyond unproductive archaeological
debates about prehistoric population movements, The Unstoppable Human Species
generates new and interesting questions about human evolution.

PREFACE
This book began with a college course I taught that at first I enjoyed, grew to
despise, and finally learned to love again. That course, “The Archaeology of
Human Dispersal,” reconstructed humanity’s wanderings over “deep-time”
prehistory by pulling together fossil, archaeological, and genetic evidence.
Teaching about fossils and archaeology posed few difficulties, for I know both
subjects well. Also, frankly, the “hard evidence” does not really change all that
much from year to year. As fortune would have it, though, I began offering
this class just as advances in studies of both modern and ancient DNA exploded
onto the paleoanthropological scene. This created a problem.
One welcomes new evidence that can settle long-standing debates about
human evolution, as genetic evidence manifestly can, but it proved difficult to
accommodate this evidence. Claims of “game-changing” genetic studies over-
turning all previous knowledge seemed to appear every week. Competing
claims contradicted one another over laboratory procedures or interpretive
issues, matters all but impenetrable to non-geneticists. My Internet-savvy
students arrived in class armed with the latest claims from “press-release
science.” I tried to assimilate these findings and to answer students’ questions
about them, but by semester’s end my lecture notes were full of cross-outs,
updates, and updates on updates about, well frankly, who had sexual inter-
course with whom during the Ice Age. The class had changed from one
I loved to one I loathed.
Still, I did not want to stop teaching the course. Prehistoric population
movements show humanity at its best: setting forth, surviving by our wits, and
never, ever quitting. Our prehistoric past offers up an optimistic vision for our
future, one I think the wider public and especially younger people need to
understand. Reflecting, I realized I had spent too much time on “who
questions” and not enough time on “how questions.” “Who questions” ask
about identity: Who were these people? Who moved from this place to that
place? Who interbred with whom? Archaeologists struggle with “who ques-
tions,” but they are molecular anthropologists’ bread and butter. Your genes

have ancestors, but fossils do not necessarily have descendants. “How ques-
tions” ask about activities. How did people get from one place to another?
How did they overcome that challenge? How did they survive long enough to
become our ancestors? Genetics brings little to the table about “how ques-
tions.” There are no genes for kindling fire, for finding or making potable
water, or for making clothing and constructing shelter. We endure because our
ancestors did these things. Our genes are but passengers, not pilots.
A lifelong interest in bushcraft and “primitive" (ancestral) technology pos-
itioned me well to answer such “how questions.” Long before I thought to
become a paleoanthropologist, I nurtured an interest in primitive technology.
Growing up in rural New England in what seemed endless tracts of woods and
fields encouraged an early interest in bushcraft (“Native American lore,” as the
Boy Scouts put it). I discovered stoneworking and expanded my expertise to
other ancestral skills, such as making fire, cordage, and mastics (glues).
Teaching college classes, I recounted bushcraft experiences to enliven my
lectures about human evolution and prehistoric archaeology. My students
enjoyed these digressions, for they had a practical side to them. When
I talked about how prehistoric humans avoided hypothermia (freezing to
death) or other hazards, they asked me what gear they should keep in their
cars during long winter commutes. When I lectured about “curated personal
gear,” we compared the things commuters versus residential students carried
daily. (We found that commuters carried more and heavier things to class than
their dorm-dwelling classmates.)
In overhauling “The Archaeology of Human Dispersal,” I cut all but the
minimum necessary discussion about “who questions,” replacing it with dis-
cussions about “how questions.” I also excised much of what archaeologists
had written in service of answering “who questions,” such as named prehis-
toric cultures and stone tool industries. Doing this conserved class time for the
things which the students actually wanted to learn about and things which
I wanted to teach them. How many different kinds of “Mousterian” industries
occurred in southern France? Nobody cares. How to not freeze or starve to
death? Everybody cares.
When I resumed teaching the course, renamed “The Unstoppable Species,”
discussions became livelier, and enrollments increased. (I deeply regretted that
I had not made these changes earlier.) Any good undergraduate course can also
be turned into a good book. This work covers the basics, the fundamental
assumptions paleoanthropologists make in reconstructing the past. One does
not need prior knowledge of anthropology or archaeology to read, under-
stand, and, one hopes, enjoy The Unstoppable Species.
Finally, a note about citations. When the book lists “important paleoan-
thropological sites,” it does not cite references for individual sites. Instead, it
directs readers to paleoanthropological and archaeological syntheses in books
or scientific journals. I have done this for several reasons. First, few of these

“important sites” enjoy monographic publication, that is, a single book, special
issue of a journal, or a long stand-alone paper synthesizing researchers’ findings.
Second, many remain the subjects of active research projects whose findings
appear in multiple journal papers spread out over many years. Third, “author-
ship bloat” (listing as so-called authors technicians and others who have not
written a word) takes up space better devoted to arguments about the evi-
dence. Citing even a fraction of these references would unnecessarily lengthen
the book’s bibliography at the expense of the main text, and the “snapshot” of
research in early would accelerate this book’s inevitable slide toward
being outdated. Nearly every important paleoanthropological site listed in this
book (and many more not listed) boasts a frequently updated Internet webpage
devoted to it listing relevant publications. Interested readers can find these
webpages and the most up-to-date information about these sites with a couple
of keystrokes and mouse clicks. One recognizes this citation strategy as
unusual, but it is practical. You’re welcome.

When the lots were drawn they began mowing. It was a beautiful
sight to see the mowing in the sunset by the river; the meadows were
of an intense soft green; the sky all fleecy and golden to the west, and
black with a great thundercloud over the woods to the east, lit up
with intermittent summer lightnings. The mowers were all in
different coloured shirts—scarlet, blue, white, and green. They
mowed till the twilight fell and the thundercloud got near to us. Then
Feodor came and made our cart into a tent by tying up the shafts,
putting a piece of matting across them, and covering it with hay, and
under this he made beds of hay. We had supper. Feodor said his
prayers, and prepared to go to sleep, but changed his mind, got up,
and joined some friends in a neighbouring cart.
Three children and a deaf and dumb peasant remained with me.
The peasants who were in the neighbouring tent were drunk; they
began by quarrelling, then they sang for about four hours without
stopping; then they talked. Feodor came back about half an hour
before it was light, and slept for that brief space. I did not sleep at all.
I wasn’t tired, and the singing was delightful to hear: so excessively
characteristic of Russia and so utterly unlike the music of any other
country, except that of Mongolia. What strikes me most about it is in
the first place the accuracy with which the parts are taken, and in the
second place the curious rhythm, and the close, ending generally on
the dominant. The children chattered for some time about
mushroom gathering, and the deaf and dumb man told me a lot by
signs, and then they went to sleep.
As soon as it was light the mowers all got up and began mowing. I
do not know which was the more beautiful effect, that of the dusk or
of the dawn. The dawn was gray with pearly clouds and suffused with
the faintest pink tinge, and in the east the sun rose like a great red
ball with no clouds near it. At ten o’clock we drove to an inn and had
tea; then we drove back, and the hay, although it was quite wet, for it
had rained in the night, was carried there and then. “The women dry
it at home,” Feodor explained; “it’s too far for us to come here twice.”
The carts were laden with hay, and I drove one of them home, lying
on the top of the hay, in my sleep. I had always envied the drivers of
carts whom one meets lying on a high load of hay, fast asleep, and
now I know from experience that there is no such delicious slumber,
with the kind sun warming one through and through after a cold
night, and the slow jolting of the wagon rocking one, and the smell of
the hay acting like a soporific. Every now and then one wakes up to
see the world through a golden haze, and then one falls back and
drowns with pleasure in a deep slumber of an inexpressibly delicious
quality.
When we re-crossed the river we again stopped for tea. As we were
standing outside an old woman passed us, and just as she passed one
of the peasants said to me, “Sit down, Barine.” Barine, I suppose
everybody knows, means a monsieur, in contradistinction to the
lower class. “Very like a Barine,” said the woman, with a sarcastic
snort, upon which the peasant told her in the plainest and most
uncomplimentary speech I have ever heard exactly what he thought
of her personal appearance, her antecedents, and what she was fit
for. She passed on with dignity and in silence. Then, after a time, I
climbed up on the wagon again, and sank back into my green
paradise of dreams, and remember nothing more till we arrived
home at five o’clock in the evening.
