Part I ESSAY
Answer all questions correctly
3. Discuss in detail what we refer to as "International Human Rights". *

International human rights refer to the fundamental rights and freedoms that all individuals are entitled
to, regardless of their nationality, ethnicity, religion, or other characteristics. These rights are recognized
in international law, including treaties such as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and
conventions like the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the International Covenant
on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights.

4. What do we mean by "freedom of speech comes with full responsibility"? *

"Freedom of speech comes with full responsibility" means that individuals have the right to express their
opinions and beliefs freely, but they also have a responsibility to consider the potential consequences of
their words. This includes being mindful of the impact their speech may have on others, being respectful
of differing viewpoints, and avoiding spreading misinformation or hate speech.

5. Discuss the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). *

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) is a milestone document in the history of human
rights. It was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on December 10, 1948, as a response to
the atrocities committed during World War II and as a way to ensure that such violations of human
rights would never happen again.
The UDHR consists of 30 articles that outline the fundamental rights and freedoms to which all humans
are entitled. These rights include civil and political rights, such as the right to life, liberty, and security of
person, as well as economic, social, and cultural rights, such as the right to work, education, and
healthcare.

6. Explain about some of the challenges associated with human rights advocacy. *

There are several challenges associated with human rights advocacy, including:
Lack of awareness and understanding: Many people may not be aware of their rights or may not
understand what human rights advocacy entails. This can make it difficult to mobilize support for
human rights causes.
Resistance from governments and powerful institutions: Governments and other powerful institutions
may resist human rights advocacy efforts, often citing concerns about national sovereignty or security.
This can make it difficult for advocates to bring about change.
Limited resources: Human rights advocacy organizations often face limited resources, both financial
and human. This can make it challenging to reach a wide audience and have a meaningful impact.
Cultural and social norms: Some cultural and social norms may be in conflict with human rights
principles, making advocacy efforts more challenging. Advocates may need to navigate these
complexities to effectively promote human rights.
7. What is your recommendation for the Africa Leadership Institute in upgrading our
International Human Rights courses? *

In order to upgrade the International Human Rights courses at the Africa Leadership Institute, I
recommend the following:
Consider expanding the course offerings to cover a wider range of human rights issues, such as
economic, social, and cultural rights, environmental rights, and rights of marginalized groups.
Partner with human rights organizations, academics, and activists who have expertise in the various
aspects of human rights to provide guest lectures, workshops, and mentorship opportunities for
students.
Integrate real-world examples and case studies into the curriculum to provide students with practical
insight into how human rights principles are applied in different contexts.
Emphasize practical skills development,Offer training in practical skills such as advocacy, research, and
communication to equip students with the tools they need to effectively promote and protect human
rights.
