5 30 11 49/50

Remarks: At 11 minutes, the first ball have fallen at 49 °C.

At 11 minutes and 30 seconds, the second ball have fallen at 50 °C.
Therefore, the average temperature of the bitumen:

7. Conclusion
The softening point test successfully evaluated the heat susceptibility of the bitumen
sample. The measured softening point of 49.5 °C falls within a typical range for road
construction applications. Further evaluation based on project specifics and expected climatic
conditions is recommended.

TP3: SPECIFIC GRAVITY

1. Introduction
A specific gravity test measures how much heavier or lighter bitumen is compared with
the same volume of water. The test is important for quality control measures when producing
asphalt mix proportions. It ensures that the asphalt is well compacted to its desired density and
to estimate the void content in the mix.

2. Objective
The purpose of the specific gravity test is to determine the specific gravity of bitumen
that is used for the classification of bitumen binders in pavement construction.

3. Materials and Equipment

Equipment and materials necessary for a specific gravity test of bitumen include:
