Preface
Arts-Based Practices with Young People at the Edge explores how arts-based
programmes designed to reconnect young people with the worlds of
learning and work provide brief, although sometimes profound, re-
engagements and productive identity shifts. It examines community ini-
tiatives which aim to connect these young people with significant learning
opportunities through engagement in various arts practices.
Young people today are encountering and navigating multiple social,
cultural, relational, economic and educational forces that challenge tradi-
tional understandings and possibilities of being successful in school, and
the life trajectories that should follow. The arts involve practices of imag-
ining new and multiple ways of being in the world to provide personal
and collective resources and repertoires to create stories that genuinely
value young people’s lifeworlds and experiences.
Contributors to this book have long histories of working and research-
ing in out-of-school programmes for young people and youth who are
living in high-poverty communities, are unemployed or underemployed,
and may have not completed a formal qualification at school or beyond.
This collection of research draws on a range of arts-based approaches and
methodologies that were developed in collaboration with young people.
It is not an exploration of the intrinsic and instrumental benefits of the
arts, rather it advances the material and philosophical production of
making in the arts. The transformational practices of making occur where

My Dear Father,
We are at length clear of Lisbon, and thus far on our journey to the
Army. We were to have gone to Abrantes, but the heavy rain has
prevented us, and we must therefore make the best of our very
indifferent quarters, which are perhaps better than we shall often
have, and at least the Marshal has a fire in his room. He is much
better, and, so long as he is comfortable, we cannot mind how we
A.D.C.’s are off. We are pretty well used to rough it, and must expect
hereafter seldom to meet with even such quarters as these. I am
very well in health.
