INTRODUCTION TO AIR POLLUTION
• Household combustion devices, motor vehicles, industrial facilities and forest fires are
common sources of air pollution.
• Pollutants of major public health concern include particulate matter, carbon monoxide,
ozone, nitrogen dioxide and sulfur dioxide.
• Air quality is closely linked to the earth’s climate and ecosystems globally.
• Air pollution is caused by solid and liquid particles and certain gases that are suspended in
the air.
• WHO data show that almost all of the global population (99%) breathe air that
exceeds WHO guideline limits and contains high levels of pollutants, with low- and
middle-income countries suffering from the highest exposures.
SOURCES OF AIR POLLUTION
• Stationary sources
• Fossil-fuel power plants and biomass power plants both have smoke stacks (see
for example environmental impact of the coal industry)
• An air pollutant is a material in the air that can have adverse effects on humans and the
ecosystem
• Primary pollutants are usually produced by processes such as ash from a volcanic
eruption.
• Rather, they form in the air when primary pollutants react or interact
• Some pollutants may be both primary and secondary: they are both emitted directly and
formed from other primary pollutants.
.
HEALTH EFFECTS
• Even at levels lower than those considered safe by United States regulators, exposure to three
components of air pollution, fine particulate matter, nitrogen dioxide and ozone, correlates
with cardiac and respiratory illness.
• These effects can result in increased medication use, increased doctor or emergency
department visits, more hospital admissions and premature death.
• The human health effects of poor air quality are far reaching, but principally affect the body's
respiratory system and the cardiovascular system.
• Children aged less than five years who live in developing countries are the most vulnerable
population in terms of total deaths attributable to indoor and outdoor air pollution.
DAILY ACTIVITIES CAUSING AIR POLLUTION
Industrial Activities
SWEEPING
MAJOR CAUSES, CITIES
• The largest cause is air pollution generated by fossil fuel combustion – mostly the
production and use of cars, electricity production, and heating.
• A study by Greenpeace estimates there are 4.5 million annual premature deaths worldwide
because of pollutants released by high-emission power stations and vehicle exhausts.
• Diesel exhaust (DE) is a major contributor to combustion-derived particulate matter air
pollution.
• Air pollution is usually concentrated in densely populated metropolitan areas, especially
in developing countries where cities are experiencing rapid growth and environmental
regulations are relatively lax or nonexistent.
Cities:
Stubble burning is the practice of intentionally setting fire to the straw stubble that
remains after grains, such as rice and wheat, have been harvested
VEHICLE EMISSIONS
Motor vehicle exhausts also produce greenhouse gases that contribute to climate
change. The main greenhouse gas produced by vehicles is carbon dioxide (CO2)
SURVEY ON AIR POLLUTION
INDIVIDUAL CONTRIBUTION OF THE GROUP
• Community Service project is useful to improve skills, especially leadership qualities and too it will
helpful us to mention as a activity in resume.
• Our self-esteem and self-confidence also improved with the conduction of survey. By conducting awareness
program we gained lot of knowledge. We build relationships with them.
• In immersion program we shared lot of things with old people, they also shared their problems with
us. It is a great opportunity to us to build self-esteem. We want to do some more such projects. It also
helpful to society to get awareness on some of effects due to environmental pollution, air pollution,
safety drinking water... etc.
