Introduction
This equipment is designed as per ASME section VIII-Division-1, Ed. 2021, however the strength of tailing
lug is checked using design by analysis approach as per ASME sec VIII Div-2, part-5 using FE analysis
method.

The objective of this analysis is to evaluate the adequacy of

1) Strength analysis of tailing lug
2) Tailing lug to cone junction

Component under consideration of Analysis: Cone section with tailing lug

Failure Mode: Protection against Plastic Collapse.
Method of Analysis: Elastic Stress Analysis.
Design Code: ASME Sec. VIII Div. 1, ED-2021
Stress Classification: Table 5.6 of ASME Sec. VIII Div. 2 ED-2021
Stress classification lines: Figure 5-A.11 ASME Sec. VIII Div. 2 ED-2021
Allowable Stresses: Table 1A, of ASME Sec. II Part D ED-2021

The analysis was carried out using ANSYS Release 19.1 software.

Finite Element Model Description

• A 3-D FE computer model of the vessel was constructed using ANSYS 19.1 software based
computer program.

• The Meshing were created in ANSYS 19.1 software

Material Properties
Material properties used in this report are obtained from ASME IID Table 1A (materials for VIII-1
designs). Stress classification limits are set in accordance with ASME VIII-2.

For FE Analysis following material properties are considered at operating temperature 55 deg C.

Allowable Stress Limits for Stress Categories

Stress limits are considered as per Part 5 of ASME SEC. VIII, DIV.2 [Ed. 2021] tabulated as follows.

Element Type

SOLID 186

Element Description:
SOLID186 is a higher order 3-D 20-node solid element that exhibits quadratic displacement behavior.
The element is defined by 20 nodes having three degrees of freedom per node: translations in the nodal
x, y, and z directions. The element supports plasticity, hyper elasticity, creep, stress stiffening, large
deflection, and large strain capabilities. It also has mixed formulation capability for simulating
deformations of nearly incompressible elastoplastic materials, and fully incompressible hyper elastic
materials.

Case 1 – 0 Degree
Loading and Boundary conditions

 Self-weight of model is considered as empty weight of equipment i.e. 68900 kg and is applied as
gravity load as shown in figure.
 Boundary condition is provided at shell cutout face is constrained in all degree of freedom.
 Lifting force of 49308 kg is applied on tailing lug at 0 deg angle as per calculation report R2
location.

Dead weight is considered in terms standerd earth gravity.

Fixity is provided at shell cross section surface as shown in above figure.

Lifting force on tailing lug is applied as shown in above figure.
