In the Indian city of Agra, close to the Yamuna River, stands the Taj Mahal, a well-known mausoleum
and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The huge white dome in the centre of the Taj Mahal is its most
iconic feature. It is surrounded by four smaller domes and is 35 metres high. The interior spaces of the
building are decorated with lovely arches and priceless stones set into the walls. There are gardens with
walkways, pools, and fountains around the structures.
The Taj Mahal's construction began in 1631 and was completed in 1648. It was built using materials
in India and other Asian countries. However, the main material is white marble. The Indians also used
other high-quality building materials at that time.
Emperor Shah Jahan had the Taj Mahal built as a burial place for his wife, Mumtaz Mahal. According
to legend, he intended to create a black Taj Mahal on the other side of the river, but this never came true.
During the Indian Rebellion of 1857, British soldiers destroyed many areas of the Taj Mahal, taking some
of the precious stones from its walls. The Taj Mahal has suffered from environmental damage over the
years, and significant government efforts have been made to preserve its beauty.
The Taj Mahal is one of India's most well-known landmarks. Every year, millions of people come to
see the mausoleum. The Taj Mahal is mentioned in lists of iconic buildings to see and is considered one
of the New Seven Wonders of the World.

correct answer to each of the questions from 44 to 50.
The Internet is by far and away the most important invention of our lifetime, and it’s made great
changes to our lives. It’s changed the way we shop and think about money. Undeniably, the future of
money has never been so uncertain. Twenty years from now, will we still be using notes and coins, or
will we be using something completely different? Many experts predict that soon everyone all over the
world will be using a single currency, the Bitcoin – digital money.
Up to now, digital money has mostly been the stuff of science fiction films. Recently, however, a
number of stories about Bitcoin have made their way into our newspapers, and governments around the
world have started to think about the consequences of such a monetary system. Bitcoin first made an
appearance in 2009, when computer whizz-kids invented ‘mining’, a way of earning them by solving
very complicated mathematical problems.
One such person was James Howells, an IT expert from Newport in Wales. Like many of the Bitcoin
pioneers, he probably didn’t think too much about his earnings. That was until, one day in 2013, he
discovered that the value of his Bitcoins had gone up, and they were now worth about £4 million!
So where had Howells stored his treasure? After looking for a long time – on the hard disk of his
computer, on every single USB stick he could find in his home – the terrible truth slowly dawned on him.
He’d stored the Bitcoins on an old hard disk, and he’d thrown it away while clearing out old computer
stuff the previous summer. Howells rushed to the recycling centre he’d taken it to. He was told he’d have
to search through waste more than a metre deep in an area the size of a football field.

Lisbon, which has been the capital of Portugal since 1252, is both beautiful and historic. Today, visitors
can spend their time walking across Lisbon's beautiful squares, exploring the city's narrow streets and
wide range of shopping opportunities - from high-end designer shops to market stalls. Or, they can simply
sit in the wonderful cafés and restaurants which serve great local food.
Lisbon is rich in ancient cultural delights. Under the busy shopping area in the city centre, there is a
hidden network of 2,000-year-old Roman rooms. But if history is your passion, Lisbon certainly won't
disappoint.
If you are hoping to travel around and see more of the city, there are many options. You might like to
jump on the old tram system, which has been in use from 1873, or go on a bike tour of the city or a river
cruise. You could also visit the zoo, the modern Pavilion of Knowledge, which is Lisbon's own interactive
science museum, or one of the largest indoor aquariums in Europe, the Oceanarium.
Lisbon is one of the few European cities lucky enough to be so close to sandy beaches, which are rarely
over-crowded, except perhaps in August. However, it's not just a summer destination either. Lisbon has
one of the mildest climates of any European cities, making it good to visit all year around.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the questions from 44 to 50.
Most younger children get a good night's sleep and wake up fresh and energised the next day. In
contrast, teenagers' body clocks change, creating a 'forbidden zone' for sleep at around 9 or 10 pm. Later
on, in middle age, the clock changes again, making it hard for parents to stay awake just when their
teenage kids are at their most alert.
To make matters worse, recent research has shown that using an electronic device in the hour before
going to bed greatly affects sleep patterns. According to studies, teenagers who used a computer or mobile
phone before bedtime were much more likely to need more than an hour to fall asleep, and were also more
likely to sleep several hours less each night. Teens who used other electronic devices such as an MP3
player, tablet, game console or TV also experienced some sleep deprivation.
But how does this affect learning? In experiments carried out in North America, students were taught
a series of skills and then slept for various lengths of time. The students who then had a good sleep
improved further. The other students who got less than six hours' sleep either didn't improve or actually
fell behind.
Other researchers are exploring the effect of light in setting sleep patterns, as darkness seems to trigger
the release of melatonin, often called 'the sleep hormone', and light emitted from electronic devices tricks
the brain into thinking it should be active rather than winding down. The solution here may involve the
introduction of a 'digital sunset', where music, social media and all electronic devices are turned off a
couple of hours before bed, similar to how the sun sets in the evening.

According to recent research, nearly three-quarters of workers spend 4 to 8 hours sitting during office
hours. Worryingly, 73% have had health problems such as back, neck and shoulder pain, which may all
be caused by long periods without moving.
Evie Scott experienced just that after she had changed job. 'I used to work in a department store, where
I was on my feet talking to customers all day,' she says, 'but I needed a higher salary so I got an office job
instead. Although the challenge of the new job was quite exciting and I quickly made friends there, for a
while I wondered whether I'd made a big mistake.'
So Evie, who travels into town by rail every day, decided to do something about her fitness level. She
explains: 'I didn't want to move house and it took far too long by bike, but what's really helped is getting
off several stations before the city centre and then walking. I'm also thinking of going to the gym opposite
work, and I might also take up squash after work, too.’
She's made some small changes at work, too. 'I avoid sitting still for too long, for instance by making
phone calls standing up, walking over to colleagues' desks rather than emailing them and simply standing
up every ten minutes. I've even moved things like my printer so that I have to get up to use it. Over a
working day all this adds up to a fair amount of extra exercise, which I'm convinced helps me work more
efficiently - and happily.'

The first day at school can be quite scary for any pupil but imagine being one among 50,000 or more!
That is the total number of students at the City Montessori School in Lucknow, India. The school, better
known as CMS, employs 4,500 staff including teachers, support staff, and others such as cleaners and
gardeners. The school was set up by husband and wife team Dr Jagdish Gandhi and Bharti Gandhi in
1959. The first pupils were the children of family members - and there were only five of them. As time
went by, more people started to hear about the school and they wanted their children to attend. Slowly,
the numbers rose.

The school educates students between the ages of 3 and 17.They all wear a uniform and each class has
about 45 pupils. But due to the size of the school, it is never possible for everyone to meet as there is no
place that is big enough for everyone to fit in. One of the school's heads, Dr Gandhi's daughter Geeta
Kingdon, said in an interview that, 'The whole of Lucknow would be jammed if we tried because one bus
holds 50 children, so we'd need 1,000 buses to bring everyone together. The school doesn't receive any
money from the government and the children's parents are only charged a small amount for their children
to attend.
For each pupil, there is also one teacher responsible for his or her health and life outside the classroom.
In this way, the staff believe that no one is forgotten. Besides the traditional subjects such as maths,
English and geography, the students also learn about world peace. CMS is the only school in the world to
be awarded a UNESCO Peace Prize for Education for its efforts in this field.
Today, the school is famous for its exam results and its international exchange programmes. The school
has some well-respected past students, who have gone on to work in international organisations. However,
within the school, and especially with everyone wearing the same uniform, it can be difficult to get
noticed, so the students have to work especially hard. Dr Gandhi believes that the children receive not
only an education, but also a love of the world.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the questions from 31 to 35.
People enjoy eating together with family and friends in every corner of the world. However, customs
to do with good behaviour around the dinner table vary greatly. In many parts of the world, people think
it is rude to eat your food noisily or to make any noise when you drink. But in some countries, this is
actually seen as a good thing. In China, for example, it is considered polite to eat and drink noisily, because
this is a sign that you are enjoying your meal. Chinese people also show respect to their hosts by always
leaving a little food in their bowls. Meanwhile, in India, people show respect to their hosts by finishing
all their food.
There are even differences regarding how you sit at the dinner table. For instance, in Britain it is bad
manners to put your elbows on the table, and children are taught to keep their hands under the table when
they are not eating. But in France, people are expected to keep their hands on the table at all times.
And what about when the meal is over and the restaurant bill arrives? In France, the custom is for one
person to pay the whole bill. In Germany, however, it is divided up according to how much each person
has eaten. Then, finally, there is the problem of whether or not to leave a tip for the staff. In Japan, people
almost never tip, while in the USA, you are expected to leave at least 15-20%. So, before you travel
anywhere, make sure you know the local customs!

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the questions from 36 to 42.
Do you ever get the feeling that your parents just don't listen to you? It's not that your parents ignore
you completely; it's more that they don't see things in quite the same way as you. And this isn't the only
problem you may face.
As you grow up, your personality is developing and you're trying to become more independent, so
naturally you have more questions and opinions about all aspects of your life. You start wondering
whether your parents actually know what they're talking about. These doubts can lead to arguments and
it's hard for parents to know how to deal with this. That's often because it's the first time they've been
responsible for a teenager and they're learning to cope!
Obviously, it's important to respect your parents and you should try to understand why they might have
a different point of view from yours. Their priority is to provide you with a structured environment, where
they can guide and support you. However, it's vital that they try and see your point of view. They also
need to give you the freedom to make your own decisions.
Ideally, your home should be a place where things can be discussed reasonably and constructively. Try
to remember that in every family there are good times and bad times, but your parents are there for you
throughout.
The important thing is to keep talking. Remember that there's no reason why people should
automatically understand all your views. The more you can discuss things with your parents in a mature
way, the happier you will feel. On the other hand, if you really find it impossible to talk to your parents,
it might be a good idea to find a family member, teacher or professional counsellor who can help you.
Above all, stay positive and remember that it won't be long before you'll be able to make your own
decisions.

bridges. A canal cruise offers the perfect way to enjoy the city, taking you on a journey along the main

The Rijksmuseum is one of Amsterdam's must-see attractions. The museum first opened its doors to
the public in 1800, and now has a magnificent collection of more than 8,000 works of art, including

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the questions from 36 to 42.
Living coral reefs are amazing ‘cities beneath the sea’ that are full of life. The reefs develop well in
the warm oceans near the Equator. The Great Barrier Reef, in Australia, is the largest reef in the world. It
is 2,000 kilometres long. Each year, thousands of visitors come to see this remarkable world beneath the
waves. However, there are rules - visitors can only visit 5% of the reef. In this way, they can still enjoy
the reef while it remains protected for future generations.
In recent years, a number of dangers have threatened coral reefs and the life that depends on them.
One of the biggest threats is an illegal way of fishing that explodes bombs in the water to kill as many
fish as possible. It kills most living things and causes great lamage to the reef's structure.
Fishing with an extremely dangerous chemical called cyanide is another threat to reefs, particularly in
the Philippines. Fishermen put this poisonous chemical into the reef water because it stuns the fish and
they can't move. They catch the fish easily and then sell them for big money to aquariums or restaurants.
The chemical they use kills coral polyps, and causes large areas of the reef to die. Water pollution also
damages reefs. In addition, warmer water in the oceans has been causing many areas of reefs to turn white.
Biologists are worried that further warming may damage coral reefs even more.
Threats to coral reefs are serious, but there is reason to hope that they will survive. Coral reef
conservation can help these tiny coral polyps, which have survived natural threats for millions of years,
to rebuild the damaged reefs that so many ocean creatures and plants depend on.

correct answer to each of the questions from 39 to 43.
“People are always saying that geniuses are born, not made. I want to prove that it is not true!” This
was the obsession of a Hungarian teacher called László Polgár. To prove that he could make someone a
genius, he took his three daughters out of school and started to teach them a specialist subject - chess. One
of the three, Judit, is now the greatest female chess player of all time and the only woman so far to be in
the world top 10!
László himself wasn't a great chess player, but he was a clever teacher. At first, Judit's sisters were
better than her, but she gradually became more serious about playing. At first, she played just ten minutes
a day. When she was 12, it had increased to ten hours. At 15 she was the youngest grandmaster ever. To
win at chess, you need to be confident, hard-working and a little bit selfish. Judit's wins include victories
against 10 male world champions, including Kasparov and Karpov.
Thanks to Judit, little by little, people are starting to pay more attention to women chess players. She
now has children of her own but she isn't teaching them in the same way as her father. Her children don't
play chess for hours every day. They only play for fun.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the questions from 44 to 50.
Modern electronic devices might look clean on the outside, but inside they contain a lot of materials
used in manufacture which may be dangerous to human health. Many countries have refused to make the
investment in waste-handling equipment and simply shipped their e-waste abroad, usually to developing
nations.
The latest United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) report estimates that, worldwide,
electronic waste is increasing by about 40 million tons a year. So what can we do about it?
The first thing to do is recognise the problem. We have gradually come to realise that in two ways in
particular, modern hi-tech can be bad for the planet. The first is its energy use; the worldwide scale of
information technology is so enormous that electronics now produce fully two per cent of global carbon
emissions. The other is the hardware, when it comes to the end of its natural life. This, increasingly, is
pretty short.
The European Union has recognised the problem by adopting a key principle: producer responsibility.
In other words, making it the duty of manufacturers of electronic goods to ensure their safe disposal at the
end of their lives.
It also suggests that all countries should start to establish proper e-waste management networks, which
could both cut down on health problems, generate employment and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Groups such as Greenpeace have led the way in putting pressure on major manufacturing companies to
find substitutes for the toxic chemicals inside their products. Encouragingly, they have had some success
in forcing them to develop non-poisonous alternatives to these. This may be the real way forward.
(Adapted from Compact First)

A. exporting it to poorer countries
B. investing in waste-handling equipment
C. processing it properly before shipping abroad
D. dumping in unmanaged landfills

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the questions from 39 to 43.
Brooklyn Free School has one part for students aged 11-18 and one for students aged 4-11. Students
in both parts choose the subjects they take, never do homework and don't have to take exams or tests. And
if they're not enjoying a chemistry lesson, for example, they can walk out, or go to the students' room and
read a book. Other examples of subjects on the timetable are writing films and building design - a very
popular subject.
Some people think this kind of school is a bad idea. They don't think it teaches students the things
they'll need when they grow up. They also think the school's only for people who have lots of money. But
actually, only 20% of the students pay the whole cost of being at the school.
So what do the students think? One student, Marlon, says in his favourite class he watched a TV show
about city life. It taught him a lot. In another, students discussed how people decide about things or vote.
They then ate at local restaurants and decided which one they liked the best.
But Marlon found it hard when he started at the school. It took more than a year for him to feel
comfortable there. He played computer games in the students' room for most of that first year. Now he
enjoys classes and says he wouldn't like to go to school anywhere else.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the questions from 44 to 50.
Cities are often noisy and dirty places, and many people prefer the peaceful atmosphere of the
countryside, with open fields and forests. However, there are many good reasons to live in cities - jobs,
exciting things to do and plenty of new people to meet. Some architects are now trying to bring the country
into the city by creating ‘green skyscrapers’.
The Bosco Verticale in Milan is a skyscraper which tries to create a ‘forest in the sky’. It opened in
2014 and has two towers. Inside, it is mainly apartments, but there are also some offices. The special thing
about this skyscraper is that there are nearly 1,000 trees, and also hundreds of smaller plants, growing all
over it.
Skyscrapers like this are more difficult and more expensive to build. There are problems with planting
trees so high up - not all kinds of trees can live in the strong winds at this height. Also, someone has to
look after the plants, to water them in hot weather and cut them back when they grow too big, so they
don't spoil the view for the people who live there. This could be a lot of work for the people who live
there, but at Bosco Verticale, a special team of professional gardeners takes care of it.
But green skyscrapers also bring a lot of benefits. The trees and plants clean the air, keep the apartments
cool in hot weather and reduce the amount of noise that people hear inside the building. More importantly,
most people would agree that they are much more attractive to look at than the usual metal and glass.
Some architects believe that over the next 20 years green buildings could change the skyline of our cities,
to make them look more like forests.

It wasn't my usual holiday experience: standing on the beach, getting ready to release a baby sea turtle
no bigger than my hand. But that was how I spent my final night in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. During my
week there, I had seen other tourists releasing the turtles in the early evening, and as my stay came to an
end, I decided to join in.
Oscar, the organiser, runs Sociedad Ecológica de Occidente - a conservation project that brings tourists
and residents together to save the sea turtles of Puerta Vallarta. These turtles are under threat from
poachers who want their meat and eggs. But Oscar and his volunteers collect the eggs and take them to
protected areas where they are allowed to hatch in safety.

We listened to Oscar's instructions. He told us that the turtles were released as the sun goes down so
the bright lights of the hotels and nightclubs don't stop them finding their way back to the sea. We stood
a few metres from the sea's edge holding our one-day-old turtles carefully in both hands. At a signal from
Oscar, we gently placed them on the sand, stepped back and watched as they crawled slowly into the sea.
Back home, I still think of the tiny baby turtle and wonder where it is now. Did it make it to the open
sea? Is it safe? Oscar Aranda has dedicated his life to saving the sea turtles; I only gave a few minutes of
my time, but those minutes will stay with me for a lifetime.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the questions from 37 to 43.
Los Angeles dancer, Brian Perez, was eating out with his friends one evening when suddenly everyone
went quiet. To his horror, he saw that the reason for this was that people were checking their phones.
Realising he had to do something to stop this, Brian made a rather daring suggestion. What if they all put
their gadgets in a pile in the middle of the table until they had finished the meal? If anyone picked up their
phone, that person would have to pay the whole bill. And so, it is said, the game of 'phone stacking' was
born.
The necessity for action like this highlights a major problem in today's society: our inability to
disconnect from technology. But while Brian's idea deals with the obsession in a social context, measures
also need to be taken at home. Some people drop their smartphones into a box the moment they arrive
home, which gives them the chance to interact with the people they live with.
A less drastic solution is to ban electronic devices at certain times of day when the whole family is
likely to be together, for example at meal times. This can be hard for everyone. On a normal day, however,
dinner takes less than an hour, and the benefits of exchanging opinions with the rest of the family certainly
makes up for the time spent offline.

Taking a break from technology is one thing, but knowing when to turn off a device is another. This is
where a digital curfew comes in handy, a set time when all devices must be put away.
And then it's time for bed. One of the best ways of ensuring you can sleep at night is to ban electronic
devices altogether from the bedroom. With technology out of the room, a line has been drawn between
daytime and sleep time, which enables us to switch off ourselves and drift off to sleep.

RoboCup is a football competition that has taken place every year since 1997. But the players are not
human; they are robots. The aim is to create, by the middle of the 21st century, a team of robot footballers
that are able to play against and beat the winners of the real World Cup.
In order for robots to play football, robotics companies have had to develop special technologies. Each
robot is fitted with a webcam which is connected to a computer inside the robot. The robot is able to see
where the other players are, where the goal is and, most importantly, where the ball is.
They are programmed to make their own decisions and during the match the robots' creators are not
allowed to tell them what to do. The robots are, however, able to communicate with other members of
their team, via a wireless network.
The technologies that are being developed for scoring goals have other uses as well. It may be possible
to develop robots that can be used in search and rescue, for example, finding people trapped in buildings
after earthquakes. They may not be as fun to watch as real footballers, but at least they don't demand
enormous salaries!

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the questions from 36 to 42.
Scientist Dr Russell Carley is interested in finding out about friendship in the 21 st century. He started
by trying to answer the question: “Can online friends be as good as face-to-face friends?” Surprisingly,
he found that the answer is a big yes! A friend is someone who gives you honest advice and support, and,
of course, an online friend can do that. When you feel anxious in the middle of the night, there's always
someone who can give you support through a text, a message or just a 'like'.
Having online friends is good for your memory, too. There's a lot of information to check every day.
When you see an interesting holiday picture, you make a note in your mind to ask your pal about it next
time they're online, or when you're together in person. Also, you can find friends who have the same
interests as you more easily. For most of us, the online community provides support, it builds our
confidence, and we feel loved.
So, if online friends are so good, do we need real friends? Interestingly, Dr Carley's research suggests
that we do. As he points out, with your real friends, you are in the same physical space; you create
memories together as you experience and enjoy doing things with each other. You have to be more
responsible with your real friends, as you can't just 'unfriend' them if you disagree with them!
Dr Carley explains the science. “When you are with your friends, you get hugs and high fives. Hugging
is good for us because our body produces a chemical called oxytocin that makes us feel good and we also
feel trust and love. Chatting to your best pals, you copy their words and gestures. When they smile, you
smile too! So, in conclusion, both real friends and online friends are great - they just help us in different
ways.”
