1.2 PROJECT OBJECTIVES
The goal of this project's design is to create a stable structural system using the most
appropriate structural components for the proposed structure. We were able to accomplish the
following by conducting structural analysis on this project:
ii. Conduct a structural analysis of the structural members using manual calculation
method and software method.
iv. Define the manual calculation using software based on the comparison.

CHAPTER 2
A new school building will be constructed at PTD 105777, PTD 195575 DAN PTF
195577, Mukim Tebrau Daerah Johor Bahru, Johor Darul Ta’zim. The dimensions of the two-
storey school block are 33 thousand metre width and 54 thousand metre length. There will be
an open area in between the two blocks which are meant for curriculum activities. The client
has requested that there be no columns protruding from the walls for safety concerns. The
circulation areas, such as walkways, bridges, staircases, and a lift, will be designed based on
the design guideline. The client demands a minimum floor-to-soffit height of 3.6 m in the office
room, with allowances for exposed lighting and service distribution.
4|P ag e
2.2 SCOPE OF WORK
From the architectural drawing, we need to draw the structural drawing which shows the
location of components of beams, columns and footings. We need to decide the suitable length,
size, thickness and location of the component. Since it is a two-storey building, there will be
four drawings which are ground floor, first floor, second and roof. The component of the
staircase also needs to be drawn.
Having design assumptions and specifications will ease the calculation and analysis of the
building since it has more precise specifications. This includes fire resistance duration,
component size, concrete and steel grade, concrete cover and design life.
The building needs to be analysed by using any software in 2 conditions which is braced
structure and unbraced structure. By using StaadPro Software and manual calculation to
analyse, the value of axial load of column, deflection, stress and moment can be obtained.
5|P ag e
2.3 METHODOLOGY
The workflow process of proposing and planning a suitable beam size by referring to
architectural layout is shown in Figure 1. By using the same process, it applied to design other
structure as slab, column and foundation. In this manual calculation, main source of reference
is using Eurocode and British Standard book.

2.3.2 Software StaadPro
There are five (5) main components in this software which are setup, geometry, general,
analysis and design. Flow chart below show summary of process to design structure and
building by using StaadPro.

2.5 3D MODEL
The term "design working life" refers to how long a structure may be used for its
original purpose with minimal maintenance but no substantial repairs. For Integrated Design
Project 2 (IDP 2), the Structural Department developed an school building that consisted of
two levels. The design working life category 4 (S4) specifies a working life of 50 years,
typically used for building structures and other joint structures. C30/37 is the minimum
concrete grade utilised in this project. R90 is the industry standard for fire resistance.
Exposure conditions are the chemical and physical conditions in which the structure is
exposed. In this suggested project, exposure circumstances such as concrete inside a building
with moderate to high air humidity, categorised as exposure class XC1, are utilised. The dead
loads of structural parts are referred to in Eurocode 2: Design of concrete structure for loading
applied in the building, except for specific circumstances that must be assumed or required by
the client. For the live loads in the building, the client has stated the loading requirements for
each building area, such as the hall, classroom, walkways, and toilet.

4.1 DISCUSSION
Based on the result of comparison between manual calculation and StaadPro output, 3
main component that had been compared which are bending moment, shear force, axial load
for column, bar used for every element, link and spacing.
For one-way slab selected which located at B-C/2-2’, both method for software and
manual calculation use 200 mm thickness of slab. The highest moment for software is 39.207
kNm/m using bar H12 spacing 175mm for bottom Y and the rest bottom X, top Y and top X
using bar H12 spacing 400mm. In manual calculation, the moment value is = 38.78 kNm /m
using bar H12 spacing 175mm for main bar and bar H12 spacing 300 mm for secondary bar.
Second element compared was two-way slab located at D’-G/3’-4. The highest moment
for software is 10.89 kNm/m using bar H12 spacing 400 mm for bottom X and bottom Y while
the rest, top Y and top X did not need bar. In manual calculation, the moment value is = 25.19
kNm/m using bar H10 spacing 150mm for both main bar and secondary bar.
Third element was simply supported beam located at D1/3’-4’. In software generated
calculation, the bending moment value is 148.60 kNm which required 621 mm² of bar and the
software provided bar 2H20 (628 mm²). For link determination based in shear value which is
137.14 kN with link provided 2H10 (157 mm²) with spacing 450 mm. In manual calculation,
bending moment value was 101.95 kNm which required 411.51 mm² of bar and bar H25 (491
mm²) was provided for the element. Link provided in manual calculation was H8 (50.3 mm²)
with spacing 150 mm based on shear value 79.18 kN.
19 | P a g e
The fourth element was continuous beam located at E/1’-3’. Based on software report
the highest value of bending moment at span was 46.8 kNm at third span of the beam and the
bar provided was 2H20 (628 mm²). The highest value of bending moment at support was
101.71kNm at second support of span 4 with bar provided 2H20 (628 mm²). The highest value
of shear force was 95.86 kN with link provided 2H10 (157.08 mm²) and spacing of 450 mm.
In manual calculation, the highest value of bending moment at span was 134 kNm at span 1
and 2 with bar provided 2H20 (628 mm²). The highest value of bending moment at support
was 163 kNm at support 2 and 4 with bar provided 3H20 (943 mm²). The highest shear value
was at support 2 and 4 which is 198 kN and the link provided was H6 (57 mm²) with spacing
125mm.
The fifth element was column located at E/2’. In software report, the axial load
calculated was 1034.37 kNm and the column type is short. Based on calculation, the area steel
required was 360 mm² and was provided bar 8H20 (2 513 mm²) with spacing 175mm and link
of 3H8 (150.8 mm²). In manual calculation, the axial load calculated was 964.02 kNm and the
column type is short. Based on calculation, the area steel required was 540 mm² and was
provided bar 4H20 (1 257 mm²) with spacing 250 mm and 125 mm of link spacing near the
beam with link of H6 (150.8 mm²) along the column.

4.2 CONCLUSION
As conclusion, the process to design a structure need calculation of load from above.
Load starting from roof, floor, beam, column, and foundation. Designer need to follow standard
from Malaysia Standard (MS), British standard (BS) and Eurocode (EC). Structural Engineer
also can refer to latest software as a guided for designing a structure. For example, Esteem,
StaadPro, Revit and Autodesk AutoCAD.
It is cleared that by using manual calculation can design most structure from footing,
column, beam, slab and stairs. As for StaadPro some structure cannot be design such as stairs.
Regardless, StaadPro can be a medium to double check and define the accuracy manual
calculation. Some other software offers much more advantage such as can generate the work
flow and the detailing of structure. This showing that it is very important for engineering
student to know how to use software such as StaadPro and other software to design building.
To conclude software is only a tool but fundamental in design is very important.
