Greek Word for Church – Ecclesia


God is faithful and has called us into fellowship or relationship – Koinōnia
The first covenant – between God and Noah
The new covenant – the last supper
In the last supper jesus revealed that he is going to die
Module 2 - Lenten Season
– Begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Holy Thursday
– There are 40 days of Lent
– Ashes are placed on our foreheads on Ash Wednesday to remind us the value of Humility and
a sign of Repentance

Fasting – reduction of one's intake of food(one full meal and two smaller meals)
 practiced during ash wednesday and good friday
Abstinence – refers to refraining from eating of meat
 practiced during ash wednesday, good friday, and all fridays of lent

We practice Humility and Repentance by:


1. Prayer and Reflection
2. Going to Confession
3. Almsgiving
4. Doing small acts of sacrifice

Easter Triduum
Holy Thursday - Last supper. Washing of the feet of the apostles
Good Friday – celebration of Christ's passion
Black Saturday – we remember christ lying in the tomb
Easter – a joyful celebration of jesus resurrection

Liturgical color - white or gold


Easter Vigil – held after sunset of Black Saturday or before dawn on East Day
 celebration of the resurrection

The paschal candle is lighted and the congregation sprinkled with holy water before the mass
starts.

Module 3
Prison Epistle (letter written while in prison)
– Paul wrote it about 62 A.D. as he anticipated his release from prison
– Key personalities are the Apostle Paul, Timothy, Epaphroditus, Euodia, and Syntyche
– this was written to show paul's appreciation and love to the Philippians in a thank you letter for
their continued help and support, and also to encourage their growth

Chapter 1 – paul writes about his sufferings and through his imprisonment the kingdom was
increased
Chapter 2 – paul explains the benefits of believers in unity with the "mind of Christ"
Chapter 3 – paul expounds on the joys of a christian and encourages the church to press forward
with the gospel
Chapter 4 – paul again mentions joy in christ as he encourages believers to rejoice in the lord.
Jesus promises us happiness.
The word "blessed" means "happy"
The beatitudes are at the core of christ's teaching.

Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are the meek: for they shall possess the land.
Blessed are they who mourn: for they shall be comforted.
Blessed are they that hunger and thirst after justice: for they shall have their fill.
Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.
Blessed are the clean of heart: for they shall see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.
Blessed are they that suffer persecution for justice’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of
heaven.
