SUBJECT –PHYSICS
CH-2, MOTION IN A STRAIGHT LINE
WORKSHEET-2
1.A drunkard walking in a narrow lane takes 5 steps forward and 3 steps backward,
followed again by 5 steps forward and 3 steps backward, and so on. Each step is 1 m long and
requires 1 s. Plot the x – t graph of his motion. Determine graphically and otherwise how long
the drunkard takes to fall in a pit 13 m away from the start.
2. Two balls of different masses are thrown vertically upwards with same initial speed. Which
one will rise to the greater height ? Which of the two will come back with greater speed to the
point of projection ?
3. A woman starts from her home at 8.00 a.m., walks with a speed of 5 km/hr on a straight road
upto her office 5 km away stays at the office upto 4 p.m., and returns home by an auto with a
speed of 25 km/hr. Choose suitable scales, and plot the x−t graph of her motion.
4. Find the displacement and distance travelled by a body in 10 seconds, using the v − t graph
given below :

5. The velocity of a particle is given by the equation, v=2t 2 +5 cms-1. Find (i) the change in S
velocity of the particle during the time interval between t=2s and t₂ = 4s (ii) the average
acceleration during the same interval and (iii) the instantaneous acceleration at t₂ = 4 s.
6. A particle starts from rest at t = 0 and has an acceleration as given in the figure below. Draw
the v − t graph for 4 seconds.

7. A ball is thrown vertically upwards.Draw its : (i) velocity-time curve (ii) acceleration-time
curve.

CASE STUDY
1. When an object moves along a straight line with uniform acceleration, it is possible to relate
its velocity, acceleration during motion and the distance covered by it in a certain time interval
by a set of equations known as the equations of motion. For convenience, a set of three such
equations are given below:
v = u + at s = ut + 1⁄2 at2 2as = v2– u2
Where u is the initial velocity of the object which moves with uniform acceleration a for time t, v
is the final velocity and s is the distance travelled by the object in time t.
i) Equation of motions are applicable to motion with
a) uniform acceleration c) non uniform acceleration
b) constant velocity d) none of these
ii) The distance travelled by a body is directly proportional to the square of time taken its
acceleration
a) increases b) decreases c) becomes zero d) remains constant
(iii) A body travels from A to B at 40ms and from B to A at 60 ms -1. Its net displacement
-1

will be
(a) 48m (b) zero (c) not defined (d) none of these
OR
A body can't have
(a) a constant speed and varying velocity
(b) an acceleration and a constant speed
(c) a constant velocity and varying speed
(d) non zero speed and zero acceleration
(iv) Which one of the following statement is false?
(a) A body can have zero velocity and still be accelerated.
(b) A body can have a constant velocity and still have varying speed.
(c) A body can have constant speed and still have a varying velocity.
(d) The direction of the velocity of a body can change when its acceleration is constant.
