Research Topic :

Research topic is Coaching Leadership Styles and Athlete Satisfactions Among Malaysian
University Basketball Team

Study Area/Scope :

The study were to identify the leadership style of coaches, player satisfaction and relationship
between leadership style of the coaches and player satisfaction. This study comprises of 101
basketball players in Malaysian Intervarsity Championship and conducted during the competition
season. A descriptive study is used in carrying out this research. To examined the style of
coaching behaviors in which university football players preferred and their satisfaction in
football team, two instruments was used that is revised version Leadership Scale for Sport
(RLSS) by Zhang, Jensen and Mann (1997) and Athlete Satisfaction Questionnaire (ASQ) by
Chelladurai and Riemer (1997).

Study Finding :

The study finding in this journal were to identify the leadership style of coaches, player
satisfaction an relationship between leadership style of the coaches and player satisfaction. In
addition, this study was designed to determine:
 Which leadership style of coaches was preferred by university basketball players.
 What factors of athlete satisfaction in team sport.
 If there were correlation between leadership style of the coaches and university basketball
players satisfaction.

Study Summary :
The article is about to identify the leadership style of coaches, player satisfaction and
relationship between leadership style of the coaches and player satisfaction. They used two
instruments, that is revised version Leadership Scale for Sport (RLSS) by Zhang, Jensen and
Mann (1997) and Athlete Satisfaction Questionnaire (ASQ) by Chelladurai and Riemer (1997) to
examined the style of coaching behaviors which university football players preferred and their
satisfaction in football team. It is important because the coaches has to plan out and shared the
team set up, goal and all aspect related to athlete satisfaction. The article to show perceptions of
team cohesion was positively correlated with perceptions of their coach exhibiting higher levels
more preferred training and instruction coaching behavior which followed positive feedback
coaching behavior, social consideration coaching behavior, social support coaching behavior,
democratic coaching behavior and lower levels of autocratic behaviors. All of this needs for team
cohesion that contributes to team success.The team integration was the most important factor
influencing athlete satisfaction in universities basketball team.

The article explained that to achieve improvement in athletic performance, it necessary


for the coach to engage in coaching behaviors to which the athletes is receptive. Three different
components of coaching behavior as actual leader behavior, required leader behavior and leader
behavior prefer. The university basketball players preferred training and instruction coaching
behavior. The players preferred their coach behavior likes make complex things easier to
understand and learn, pay special attention to correcting athletes’ mistakes, explain to each
athlete the techniques and tactics of the sport, use a variety of drills for a practice, stress the
mastery of greater skills, use objective, conduct proper progressions in teaching fundamental,
supervise athletes’ drills closely, clarify training priorities and work on them, possess good
knowledge of the sport, provide feedback after a substitution, provide instructions that are brief,
clear and concise. It shows that this coach leadership style will achieve the successful in the
performance athlete.
Your Conclusion/Comment :

For the conclusion, coaches should give the motivated to the athlete work and to provide
performance. The motivated help team see what the value, desire, responsibilities and encourage
belief in team member abilities to succeed. A successful coach help athletes master new skills
and make them enjoy competing with others. Successful coaches are not only well versed in the
skills of their sport, but they also have to teach and model the skills needed for successful living
in society. Besides that, communication is very important coaches and athletes relationship.
Effective communication is a key component of a winning team. Positive team dynamics and
successful coaching both demands that coaches and athletes be able to communicate goals,
expectations or problems clearly in a straightforward and respectful manner. As a coach, must
understand how to foster effective communication improves team cohesion and promotes
efficient training. As a player, using effective communication can improves performance and
strategy on and off the field. The athlete does not only have to receive the information from
coach but also to understand and accept it. Besides that, to become successful, the coaches have
to well verse in their skills of sport. Successful coaches will help athletes improve their skill in
the athletes’ specific sport and feel good in their performance.
