 Bully Algorithm :

Example :

Suppose there are n different nodes with unique identifiers ranging from 0 to n−1.

Given that 5 is the highest ID amongst the nodes, it is the leader. Assuming that the leader crashes and node 2
are the first to notice the breakdown of the leader, the node with ID 2 initiates an election.

Accordingly, the node with ID 2 sends an election message to all nodes with an ID greater than its own ID.

Nodes 3 and 4 both receive the election message. However, since node 5 is crashed, it does not respond or
receives the ping. Nodes 3 and 4 accordingly

broadcasting election messages to nodes with IDs greater than their own respective IDs.

Moreover, they respond with an OK message to the node that sent them a request for election since they are
not the nodes with the highest IDs. This means that nodes 3 and 4 would confirm to node 2 that they are alive
and non-crashed.
Node 4 receives the election message and accordingly responds with an OK message to node 3 to confirm its
operating state. As of the previous case, node 5 does not respond as it is unavailable.

On the other hand, node 4 has already broadcasted an election message to node 5, and received no response. It
simply figures out that node 5 has crashed, and the new node with the highest ID is node 4.

Node 4 figures out that it is the node with the highest ID, then sends a coordinator message to all of the alive
nodes.

Consecutively, all nodes are updated with the new leader.


Steps :

1. Initialization: All nodes in the distributed system have unique identifiers or process numbers assigned to them.
Each node is aware of the total number of nodes in the system.
2. Election Process: When a node detects that the leader is not responsive or fails, it initiates the election process.
The initiating node sends an Election message to all other nodes with higher process numbers.
3. Comparison and Response: Upon receiving an Election message, each node compares its own process number
with the one in the message. If a node has a higher process number, it sends an OK message back to the
initiating node. If a node receives an Election message but has a lower process number, it remains silent and
does not respond further.
4. Leader Determination: The initiating node waits for responses from all higher-numbered nodes for a certain
period. If it receives an OK message from all higher-numbered nodes, it declares itself as the leader. If the
initiating node does not receive responses from higher-numbered nodes within the specified time, it assumes
that a higher-numbered node is the leader.
5. Coordinator Notification: After determining the leader, the initiating node broadcasts a Coordinator message to
inform all other nodes about the elected leader. This message contains the identifier or process number of the
newly elected leader.
6. Acknowledgment and Consensus: Upon receiving the Coordinator message, nodes acknowledge the leader by
sending an acknowledgment message back to the leader. This step ensures that all nodes recognize the leader
and reach a consensus on its identity.

The Bully Algorithm ensures that the node with the highest process number becomes the leader.

11. Ricart and Agrawala’s Algorithm for Concurrency control in cloud computing

Brief explanation of the Ricart and Agrawala's Algorithm:

1. Initialization: Each node in the distributed system maintains a queue to track pending requests for accessing a
shared resource. Nodes also maintain local variables to keep track of their own state, such as timestamp and
reply status.
2. Requesting Access: When a node wants to access a shared resource, it sends a request message to all other
nodes in the system, indicating its intention to access the resource. The request message includes the
requesting node's timestamp, which represents the logical time at which the request was initiated.
3. Handling Request Messages: Upon receiving a request message, a node compares the timestamp of the
incoming request with its own timestamp and reply status. The node follows these rules:
a. If the resource is currently not in use by the node and it has not sent a request or reply message related to
the resource, it grants access by sending a reply message back to the requesting node.
b. If the resource is currently in use by the node, or it has already sent a request or reply message related to the
resource, it defers the reply until it releases the resource.
4. Receiving Reply Messages: When a node receives a reply message from all other nodes in the system, it can
proceed with accessing the shared resource. The node may need to wait until it has received a reply message
from every other node, indicating their agreement to grant access.
5. Accessing the Resource: Once a node has received replies from all other nodes, it can safely access the shared
resource and perform its desired operations. Other nodes that requested access to the same resource will wait
until the node finishes accessing the resource.
6. Releasing the Resource: After a node finishes using the shared resource, it releases the resource and sends
release messages to all other nodes. The release message notifies other nodes that the resource is now
available for access.
Ricart and Agrawala's Algorithm ensures that only one node can access the shared resource at a time, providing
mutual exclusion. The algorithm guarantees safety by ensuring that a node can access the resource only if it has
received replies from all other nodes. It also ensures progress by allowing concurrent access whenever there are
no conflicts.

12. Leader Detection Algorithms in cloud computing.

In cloud computing, leader detection algorithms are used to identify or detect the leader node in a distributed
system. Here are three commonly used leader detection algorithms in cloud computing:

1. Bully Algorithm: The Bully Algorithm is a leader election algorithm that can be used for leader detection. In this
algorithm, nodes in the system have unique identifiers. When a node detects that the leader is unresponsive or
fails, it initiates an election process by sending an election message to nodes with higher identifiers. If a higher-
identifier node exists, it responds by sending an "OK" message, indicating that it is alive and should become the
leader. If the initiating node receives no responses within a specific time, it declares itself as the leader. The
Bully Algorithm ensures that the node with the highest identifier becomes the leader.
2. Ring Algorithm: The Ring Algorithm is another leader detection algorithm commonly used in distributed
systems. In this algorithm, nodes are organized in a ring topology, where each node has a link to its successor
node. The leader detection process starts with a node initiating a token message and passing it to its successor.
As the token circulates in the ring, each node checks if it is the leader based on specific criteria, such as the
highest identifier. If a node determines it is not the leader, it forwards the token to the next node. When the
token reaches the leader, it can perform specific actions or notify other nodes about its leadership status.
3. Chang and Roberts Algorithm: The Chang and Roberts Algorithm is a more efficient leader detection algorithm
that utilizes a binary tree structure to identify the leader. Nodes in the system are organized in a binary tree,
where each node has links to its parent and two children nodes. The algorithm starts with a node initiating a
search by propagating a search message to its parent and one of its children. The search message circulates
through the tree until it reaches a leaf node. The leaf node determines the leader based on certain conditions
and sends the result back to its parent. The parent node then propagates the result further up the tree until it
reaches the initial node that initiated the search. This way, the leader is detected efficiently with reduced
message exchanges compared to other algorithms.

13. Distributed Mutual Exclusion.

Distributed mutual exclusion is a fundamental problem in cloud computing, where multiple processes or nodes
compete for exclusive access to shared resources or critical sections. The goal is to ensure that only one process
at a time can execute a particular section of code to maintain data consistency and prevent race conditions.

Requirements of Mutual exclusion Algorithm:


 No Deadlock: Two or more site should not endlessly wait for any message that will never arrive.
 No Starvation: Every site who wants to execute critical section should get an opportunity to execute it in
finite time. Any site should not wait indefinitely to execute critical section while other site are repeatedly
executing critical section
 Fairness: Each site should get a fair chance to execute critical section. Any request to execute critical
section must be executed in the order they are made i.e Critical section execution requests should be
executed in the order of their arrival in the system.
 Fault Tolerance: In case of failure, it should be able to recognize it by itself in order to continue
functioning without any disruption.
14. Types of Cloud Service Models.

There are the following three types of cloud service models -

1. Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS)

2. Platform as a Service (PaaS)

3. Software as a Service (SaaS)

Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS)

IaaS is also known as Hardware as a Service (HaaS). It is a computing infrastructure managed over the internet.
The main advantage of using IaaS is that it helps users to avoid the cost and complexity of purchasing and
managing the physical servers.

Characteristics of IaaS

There are the following characteristics of IaaS -

o Resources are available as a service

o Services are highly scalable

o Dynamic and flexible

o GUI and API-based access

o Automated administrative tasks

Platform as a Service (PaaS)

PaaS cloud computing platform is created for the programmer to develop, test, run, and manage the applications.

Characteristics of PaaS

There are the following characteristics of PaaS -

o Accessible to various users via the same development application.

o Integrates with web services and databases.

o Builds on virtualization technology, so resources can easily be scaled up or down as per the organization's
need.

o Support multiple languages and frameworks.

o Provides an ability to "Auto-scale".


Software as a Service (SaaS)

SaaS is also known as "on-demand software". It is a software in which the applications are hosted by a cloud
service provider. Users can access these applications with the help of internet connection and web browser.

Characteristics of SaaS

There are the following characteristics of SaaS -

o Managed from a central location

o Hosted on a remote server

o Accessible over the internet

o Users are not responsible for hardware and software updates. Updates are applied automatically.

o The services are purchased on the pay-as-per-use basis

15. define logical clocks and vector clocks in cloud computing.

In cloud computing, logical clocks and vector clocks are concepts used for ordering and timestamping events in
distributed systems. They are mechanisms that help establish a partial ordering of events across different nodes
or processes in a distributed environment.

1. Logical Clocks: Logical clocks are a logical abstraction of time in distributed systems. They provide a way to
assign logical timestamps to events that occur in different processes. The logical clock concept was introduced
by Leslie Lamport.

In a logical clock, each process maintains a local clock value. When an event occurs in a process, it increments its
local clock value and associates that value with the event. The logical clock values are not required to
correspond to physical time but must follow a partial ordering based on the causality of events.

Logical clocks are used to establish a happens-before relationship between events. If event A happens before
event B, the logical clock value associated with event A will be less than the logical clock value associated with
event B. However, if events are concurrent or causally unrelated, their logical clock values may not have a
specific ordering.

One well-known logical clock algorithm is Lamport's logical clocks, which use a scalar value incremented for
each event in each process.

2. Vector Clocks: Vector clocks are an extension of logical clocks that capture the causal relationship between
events in distributed systems. Introduced by Colin Fidge, vector clocks provide a more precise ordering of
events compared to logical clocks.
In a vector clock, each process maintains a vector of clock values. The vector has an entry for each process
participating in the system. When an event occurs in a process, it increments its own entry in the vector clock.
Additionally, the process piggybacks its vector clock on messages sent to other processes.

When a process receives a message, it updates its own vector clock by taking the element-wise maximum of the
received vector clock and its own vector clock. This update reflects the knowledge of causality between events.

Vector clocks allow for a more accurate determination of causality and concurrent events. By comparing the
vector clock values associated with different events, it is possible to determine if events are causally related,
concurrent, or partially ordered.

Vector clocks are commonly used in distributed systems for various purposes, such as ordering log entries,
detecting causality violations, or resolving conflicts in replicated databases.
