Introduction

Congratulations on choosing Practice Makes Perfect: Basic English for your first
year of English language learning.
There is really only one way to learn a new language, and that is to build your
vocabulary, learn the verb tenses and the mechanics of that language, and then
practice, practice, practice. This workbook was designed to help you do just that.
This workbook will help you to proficiently learn and effectively master the
strategies and methods needed to provide you with a solid foundation in English.
All the lessons are presented in a simple and progressive format designed to help
you retain the knowledge and gain confidence by applying and reinforcing the
skills acquired throughout the workbook.
You will learn the mechanics of English through user-friendly, interactive,
and well-constructed grammar exercises. These exercises are loaded with everyday
basic words intended to help you quickly and efficiently enrich your vocabulary
and give you a firm understanding of the lesson before moving on to the next.
Ample space is provided in each lesson for you to record your new vocabu-
lary words in a central location to allow you to study these words regularly and
refer back to them quickly when necessary. Be sure to learn these words by heart
as they are basic and useful English words.
The second section of Practice Makes Perfect: Basic E­nglish provides you with
a variety of review exercises specially designed to allow you to measure your com-
prehension and retention of the concepts covered in the lessons of this workbook.
Since these review exercises are directly related to the learning objectives of this
workbook, they will allow you to recognize your achievements and highlight your
progress. They will also provide you with the opportunity to strengthen your abil-
ities by serving as extra practice for the material previously studied. To assure a
fair and accurate self-evaluation of your progress, be sure to complete the entire
workbook before attempting these review exercises.

Place not after the verb to be to create the negative form of the present tense.

The negative form of the present tense of the verb to be can also be expressed
with the contraction isn’t or aren’t. There is no contraction for am not.

he is not → he isn’t → He isn’t a lawyer.
she is not → she isn’t → She isn’t ready.
it is not → it isn’t → It isn’t a toy.

Vilisten pakeni alta maa, pienet jalat laukkasivat niin tiheästi ja niin
pitkään kuin suinkin jaksoivat ja osasivat, mutta äreänä ja sitkeänä
päästeli Musti perässä eikä hellittänyt. Kauan laukkasi repo, koetti
eksyttää vainoojaansa, tehdä mutkia ja laukata kiertopolkuja, mutta
ei sekään auttanut, yhä oli hurja Musti räyhäten kintereillä. Ei repo
enää lopulta tiennyt, minne kulku piti, eteenpäin vain samosi
sokeasti ja toivoi koiran väsyvän, mutta eihän se väsynyt — yhä
kiukkuisemmin vain perässä räyhäsi. Jo rupesi väsymys tuntumaan
revon omissa jänterissä ja hän arvasi tuhonsa hetken tulleen, ellei
pian pääsisi johonkin turvapaikkaan. Silloin valkeni yhtäkkiä metsän
ranta ja hämmästyksekseen hän huomasi tulleensa samalle
halmeaukeamalle, joka oli hänen tauttansa nähnyt sekä hukan että
karhun kuolon. Mutta täällähän oli pakopaikka, sama nauriskuoppa,
johon hän oli suden houkutellut, ja sinne nyt repo pyyhälsi. Hätimiten
ehti hän ahtaasta ilmareiästä pujahtaa sinne — isäntä kun oli suden
tapettuaan tukkinut kuopan suun — kun jo Musti piti hirmuista
metakkaa ulkopuolella ja koetti sekin tunkeutua perästä, vaikka ei
onneksi mahtunut.

Pamppailevin sydämin nyt kettu istui kuopan pohjalla. Hän ei


voinut enää ymmärtää omaa mielentilaansa, vaan muisteli surren
karhua ja sutta. »Olisipa hukka kuoma vielä elossa, niin äkkiä
heittäisit haukkumisesi, Musti-pahalainen, mutta ei ole enää elossa
hukka, ei, vaan kuollut on ja nahka Horpon rosvon hoteissa! Ja
olisipa karhu kuoma elossa ja kuulisi räyskämisesi, Musti-
pahalainen, niin äkkiä hän tänne samoaisi ja auttaisi minut pois tästä
pälkähästä. Mutta ei ole enää elossa karhu, ei, vaan nahkansa on
Horpon rosvon tuvan laessa kuivamassa, lihat suolassa ja luut tuolla
tantereena valkenemassa! Yksinäiseksi tässä tulee pian repo rukan

Näin on nyt kerrottu karhun, suden ja revon sekä monen muunkin


Metsolan asukkaan elämästä siellä Ilmolan taustalla. Kaikkien niiden
monien vuosien kuluessa, joita oli ehtinyt mennä siitä, kun eläimet
kokoontuivat tien tekoon, olivat ilmolaiset ahkerasti eläinten kanssa

eläimetkin, eivät enää syöneet ihmisten elukoita, vaan väistyivät yhä

koskemattomia saloja olevan, ihmetellen sitä valtaa ja voimaa, joka
ilmolaisilla näytti olevan. Sillä sitä myöten kuin teitä lisääntyi, ilmestyi
teiden varsille uusia asuntoja ja vihantia peltoja, joista ilmolaiset
korjasivat satoisia viljoja aittoihinsa, kooten itselleen kaikkea

Niinpä ei ollut Ilmolassa sitä tölliä, jossa ei isä tahi äiti, kirvesvartta
vuollessansa tahi värttinätä väätessänsä, olisi pyytävälle lapselleen
heistä kertonut. Ja kun lapsonen oli rengassilmin aikansa tätä
kaikkea kuunnellut ja jutun loputtua kysynyt, onko se totta myöskin,
oli isä ottanut hymyillen piipun suustansa ja sanonut: »Kysy, lapseni,
Piippolan äidiltä. Hän kyllä kuoli menneenä vuotena, mutta isä elää
vielä.»

Ja sitten oli tuli liedessä riutunut, ulkona oli vinkunut talven


tuiskutuuli, mutta töllissä oli ollut lämpöistä ja turvallista. Uneen oli
