The coastal and lowland areas of western Mindanao are homes of the
Islamic cultures. Folk culture and court music dating way back in the 10th
century or even much earlier are integrated in the musical traditions of the
pre-Islamic culture. Music is frowned upon the fundamental Islamic view,
but the influx of foreign Islamic cultures of the Arabs and Persians, has
changed this view. The musical practices of the people in the coastal and
lowland areas of Western Mindanao are vital element in their social life are
the main source of their ethnic identities. The musical practices of these
indigenous people are a mixture of Western and Non-western ideas.
The Islamic community in the Philippines consists of ethno-linguistic
groups:
- the Maguinadanao of Cotabato
- the Maranao of Lanao and Cotabato
- the Samal and Jama Mapun of the Sulu Islands of Sibutu and Cagayan De
Sulu
2
- the Tausug of the Sulu Islands of Jolo, Siasi and Tawi-Tawi
- the Yakan of Basilan and Zamboanga

The uniqueness of the cultures and his/her musical

practices that make up the larger Islamic society in
Mindanao and Sulu belongs to one single tradition.

Similarities do exist in some vocal styles within the

large society, but theoretical concepts, functions, aesthetics
and repertoires differ from culture to culture and even from
village belonging to one language group.

Physical fitness is the ability of the body to do day-to-day activities

without undue fatigue, and still has time to do leisure activities and meet
emergencies. Physical fitness is divided into two components, health-related and
skill- related components.

Health-related components focus on factors that promote optimum

health and prevent the onset of disease and problems associated with
inactivity.

Body Composition is the proportion of fat and

non-fat mass in your body. A healthy body composition
is one that includes a lower percentage of body fat and
a higher percentage of non-fat mass, which includes
muscle, bones, and organs.

Cardiovascular Endurance is the ability of the

heart, lungs, and blood vessels to deliver oxygen to your
body tissues without becoming overly tired.

Flexibility is the ability of the joints to move

beyond their normal range of motion.

Muscular Strength refers to the amount of force

a muscle can produce with a single maximal effort.

Muscular Endurance is the ability of a muscle or group

of muscles to sustain repeated contractions against a resistance
for long period of time.

Skill-related components refers to your ability to

perform physical tasks efficiently as it relates to a sport.

Speed is the ability of the body to move fast

from one point to another, in the shortest possible
time.

Agility is the ability to move in a sudden

change of direction and body position quickly.
Ex. Sudden change of direction during a Patintero
game.

14
Balance is the ability to maintain
equilibrium even when moving.

Coordination is the ability to use the senses

and body parts to perform tasks smoothly,
efficiently, and accurately.

Power is the ability to exert a maximal force

in the shortest time possible, as in accelerating,
jumping, and throwing implements.

Reaction Time refers to the speed at

which a person’s body responds to an
external stimulus.

thing. It's a natural, physical response that can trigger our fight-or-flight
response. Stress can increase our awareness in difficult or dangerous
situations, allowing us to act quickly in the moment.

Stress is inevitable and a normal part of life. Stress can

be defined as a state of mental or emotional strain resulting from difficult or
demanding circumstances. While everyone experiences stress,
what stresses someone out varies from person to person. While one might
