6.1 Surface Preparation:

6.1.1 The CONTRACTOR represented by the Project Manager, site/project engineer and the Consultant
shall visit the affected area for inspection prior to surface preparation works and confirmation. The
surrounding area of the affected columns should be enveloped with board‐ups prior to the
demolition works. After breaking the masonry/ concrete walls connected to the affected column
with the impact breaker, the concrete surface must be thoroughly cleaned and prepared to achieve
a laitance and contaminant free, open textured surface using steel cup brush connected to electric
grinder. All prepared surfaces must be brushed, air blasted and vacuumed to achieve a dust free
condition. No loose particles should be left on any of the substrate surfaces. Care should be
observed that concrete rubbles/ debris must not fall down the building and safety nets be installed

for external columns. Vacuum cleaner must be utilized to minimize the effect of dust contamination
all throughout the surface preparation works.

6.1.2 External corners must generally be rounded/ chamfered to a minimum radius of 25 mm, or as
required by the Engineer’s specification (Column confinement). This can be achieved either by
grinding.

6.1.3 The surfaces to be strengthened must be levelled to ensure that the specified tolerances are
achieved and maintained as detailed in the table below. The plane and level of the substrate is to be
checked with a suitable straight edge. The tolerance required depends on the specified standards to
be achieved. The recommended Sika® values are given in the right hand column of the table below.

Standard Fib bulletin 14 Sika® recommendation

Tolerance for 2 m length 10 mm ‐
Tolerance for 0.3 m length 4 mm 2 mm
Max. formwork marks ‐ 0.5 mm

6.1.4 After establishing a clean concrete surface, the affected surface must be inspected for cracks, voids
and honeycombs. All concrete imperfections must be totally sealed or rectified by the CONTRACTOR
using Sikadur®‐31 CF Normal repair mortar. The final surface must be smooth, dry and free of
damaged concrete and any other contaminants as dust, foreign particles, cement laitance, oil,
grease, surface coatings, curing compounds, waxes and impregnations etc., which could adversely
affect or inhibit the bond of the strengthening system to the concrete. The substrate moisture
content must be less than 4% pbw.

6.1.5 The concerned work area must also be cleaned after every operation shift. Inspection Request must
be raised by the CONTRACTOR upon completion of the rectification works and before proceeding
with the retrofitting works.

6.2 Preparation and Application of Structural Retrofitting Materials:

6.2.1 SikaWrap® ‐ 600 C shall only be applied by trained and experienced workmen. It is the responsibility
of the CONTRACTOR to submit the training certificates of all his workmen responsible for the
retrofitting operations.

6.2.2 The carbon fiber fabric shall be cut to the required dimensions with special scissors or a Stanley
knife (razor knife / box‐cutter knife). It is highly advisable not to fold the carbon fiber fabric during
cutting.

6.2.3 SikaWrap® ‐ 600 C is applied using the wet application process. The system build‐up and
configuration as recommended by Sika, the manufacturer, must be fully complied with and may not
be changed. For concrete substrate adhesive primer, Sikadur® ‐ 330 (for rougher substrates) or
Sikadur® ‐ 300 (for smoother substrates) 2‐component epoxy‐based impregnating resin must be
utilized. For impregnating/ laminating resin, the CONTRACTOR can only use Sikadur® ‐ 300.

RETROFITTING WORKS

6.2.4 Mixing of Concrete Substrate Adhesive Primer. For Sikadur® ‐ 330, which comes in 5kg (A+B)
packaging, the mixing ratio of components A and B is 4 : 1 by weight. For Sikadur® ‐ 300, which
comes in 20kg/set packaging, the mixing ratio of components A and B is 100 : 34.5 by weight. When
using bulk material, the exact mixing ratio must be safeguarded by accurately weighing and dosing
each component.

6.2.5 Mixing of Impregnating/ Laminating Resin. The mixing ratio for Sikadur® ‐ 300 shall be the same as
that for primer which is 100 : 34.5 by weight. For pre‐batched units, mix components A+B together
for at least 3 minutes at low speed. Avoid aeration while mixing. Then, pour the whole mix into a
clean container and stir again for approx. 1 more minute at low speed to keep air entrapment at a
minimum. For bulk packing and not pre‐batched, add the components in the correct proportions
into a suitable mixing pail and stir correctly using an electric low speed mixer as above for pre‐
batched units.

6.2.6 After mixing the resin and the hardener for Sikadur® ‐ 330, the CONTRACTOR need to consider the
pot life of the mixture based on the ambient temperature. For ambient temperatures of +35oC,
+23oC and +10oC, the pot life for 5kg mixture shall be within 30 mins., 60 mins. and 90 mins.,
respectively. It is shorter at high temperatures and longer at low temperatures. The greater the
quantity mixed, the shorter the pot life. To obtain longer workability at high temperatures, the
mixed adhesive may be divided into portions. Another method is to chill components A+B before
mixing them (not below +5 °C).

6.2.7 For Sikadur® ‐ 300, the CONTRACTOR need to consider the pot life of the mixture based on the
ambient temperature. For ambient temperatures of +40oC, +23oC and +15oC, the pot life for the
mixture shall be within 90 mins., 4 hours and 6 hours, respectively. The sequence of operations shall
be planned to ensure that the adhesive can be applied, joined and the work with it completed
within three hours of mixing the adhesive or within 80% of the pot life, whichever comes first.

6.2.8 Prior to starting the application, the CONTRACTOR need to measure and record the substrate
moisture content (to be less than 4%), the relative humidity and determine the dew point. The
temperature must be min. 3 °C above the dew point.

6.2.9 Primer Application. Primer application is the same procedure for manual impregnation or
mechanical saturator impregnation. Apply the primer (Sikadur®‐330 for ‘rougher’ substrates,
Sikadur®‐300 for ‘smoother’ substrates) to the prepared substrate with a trowel, brush or roller. The
Sikadur®‐300 resin is very liquid and if necessary, it is possible to apply a second coat after the first
coat has penetrated into the concrete substrate.

6.2.10 Manual Resin Application. Distribute 2/3 of the expected Sikadur®‐300 quantity on a clean PE sheet
and then place the pre‐cut fabric onto the resin covered sheet. Saturate SikaWrap® fabric by rolling
with a mohair or plastic roller in the fibre direction until the resin penetrates through the fabric.
Distribute the remaining 1/3 of the Sikadur®‐300 onto the fabric and evenly spread with roller to

RETROFITTING WORKS

fully saturate fabric. Remove the excess resin. The resin consumption can be checked by taking the
weight of the fabric before and reweighing after wetting with Sikadur®‐300.

6.2.11 Fiber Application. Always work in the same direction as the fibers. Avoid excessive force and moving
the roller back and forth when laminating to prevent any folding or creasing of the SikaWrap® ‐ 600C
fabric.

6.2.12 Fabric Positioning/ Lamination. Place the pre‐wetted, saturated SikaWrap® fabric onto the primed
wet surface in the required direction (within the open time of the primer) and smooth by hand to
remove folds, creases and large air entrapments. The easiest way to transport the impregnated
fabric is to roll it onto a cardboard tube. This way the fabric is less likely to get distorted or wrinkled.
If possible, leave the fabric on the roll for 5‐10 minutes, so the resin can soak into the fibre bundles.
For a better grip of the fabric to the tube, it is possible to cover it with quartz sand before use.

6.2.13 Multiple Layers. If additional layers are required, repeat the impregnation and lamination process
described above. The application must take place wet on wet and within 60 minutes (at +23 °C) of
the previous layer. If it is not possible to apply the subsequent layers of fabric within 60 minutes of
the previous one, then a waiting time of at least 12 hours must be observed before application of
the next layer, and again a priming layer is necessary. Take note of the open times mentioned in the
PDS of Sikadur® ‐ 300. In all situations where application is onto a cured layer of the epoxy resin, the
surface must be dry and free of dust prior to the application. The overlapping sections of the
additional layers should be distributed around the circumference of the column.

6.2.14 Cleaning. Clean all tools and application equipment with epoxy reducer or lacquer thinner
immediately after use. Any uncured epoxy should be wiped up with a rag wetted with solvent.
Hardened material can only be removed mechanically.

7. Inspections and Testing Requirements:

7.1 Before Application. The concrete substrate strength must always be checked and verified in all
situations. This is done by means of a series of pull‐off tests as outlined in Document 810 4:
“Description of Test Procedure: Surface Adhesion Strength of Concrete”. The mean adhesive tensile
strength of the prepared concrete substrate must be minimum 1.5 N/mm2 (Sika® minimum
recommendation) unless otherwise detailed in the Engineer’s specifications. Concrete substrates
must generally be at least 28 days old. If the substrate is damaged and needs to be repaired, a
repetition of the substrate strength tests is necessary after repair.

7.2 Site Inspection. On site, all aspects of preparation, mixing, and application of materials should be
continuously observed and recorded, including the following:
• Surface preparation and testing
• Materials labels and batch numbers
• Mixing of the resin materials

RETROFITTING WORKS

• Application of the resin to the substrate and the fabric

• Curing of the materials
• System testing
• All other details relating to the strengthening requirement and system specification

7.3 Upon Completion of Retrofitting. Upon completion of the curing process the installed system should
be checked again for any areas where the impregnation resin has not fully penetrated, or where any
resin has not completely cured. Any such areas covering more than 25 x 25 mm on the surface must
be repaired. Any repairs must be made subject to the same application, curing and quality control
specifications as the original work. Small delamination’s and / or bubbles can be injected with a
compatible resin system to re‐establish bond between the substrate and the strengthening system.
If large defects are found, removal of the applied system and re‐application, or the application of
additional layers of FRP Reinforcement may be necessary. The repair type, the preparatory works,
the number of layers to be added and the overlapping lengths must all be approved by the
responsible Structural Engineer.

8. Safety:

8.1 The safety officer shall give all operatives safety induction training before starting works.

8.2 Provide protection to existing work & components, which are liable to damage during application.

8.3 The area where retrofitting work is to be done will be protected with board‐ups or warning tapes in
order to avoid foot traffic and other trade activities in that area.

8.4 Provide enough lighting in areas of work in night time installation.

8.5 Provide necessary safety belts, gondola, scaffolding, wooden planks and working platforms, ladder
etc… for easy access of labors near at the working area.

8.6 The risks can be controlled by the use of necessary PPE’s and by providing safe and adequate
platforms approved by the site safety department.

8.7 Safety goggles, masks and hand gloves shall be provided to all workers for the application of
retrofitting materials.

8.8 When working at high level open areas, safety railing shall be provided prior to installation.

8.9 Waste management: Waste retrofitting materials, concrete debris, empty cans and other
construction materials shall be carted away and dumped to the approved dumping yard.
