Hero or Harley
Having test ridden both the Hero Mavrick
440 and the Harley-Davidson X440, I am
unable to pick one. Looking forward to hearing
your insights about both motorcycles.
Jeevan L, via social media
Dear Jeevan,
Their similarity does make it difficult to pick
one over the other but here is what we think.
Go for the X440 if you enjoy relaxed riding at
an easy pace over long distances. If you are
okay with sacrificing some comfort for a little
more agility and thrill around corners, then
the Mavrick 440 is a better option.
Dear Rizwan,
The first thing you should look for is all-round
protection. There should be armour at the
knucles and sliders on the palm as well. Leather
or abrasion-resistant fabric is preferred for
overall construction. Of course, touchscreen
functionality is helpful for some. Within that
budget, you could consider leather gloves from

he Karizma’s distinction of
being Hero’s largest-capacity motorcycle has
now been claimed by the new Mavrick 440.
We spent some time around the Rann to
experience this new flagship and here is our
first impression.
It is not easy to place the Hero Mavrick
440 in a segment. We had better describe it as a cross between a
naked motorcycle and a retro-modern cruiser. The design is
extremely simple and the focus seems to be on having a
powerful front end. The broad tank, shrouds, and round LED
headlight achieve that effect with ample support from the
exposed frame and engine. Meanwhile, the tail tapers into a
shape that complements the motorcycle’s visual appeal.
Running on 17-inch cast alloy wheels at either end with wide
road-oriented tyres, the Mavrick has a striking stance that offers
175 millimetres of ground clearance; good enough for our urban
conditions and some broken roads, I would say. It is also worth
noting that most of the bodywork on this motorcycle is made of
metal which has taken the bike’s weight to 187 kilograms.

Select A mode and you would expect more. But in the real world and on a
real road, it gave a sharpness to the throttle that added an edge I did not
need. B mode is softer but delivers the same peak power and torque—as
well as cracking wheelies (with the TC off)—as my default setting.
On the fast Monteblanco racetrack, with its long, near one-kilometre
straight, I was a little concerned the Suzuki might be overwhelmed and run
out of oomph, but on the tight infield section, it punched hard, driving out
of second, third, and fourth gear corners with serious intent for this class. On

At the rear, things are less clear-cut. The new Showa shock copes well if
you ride smoothly but add a little aggression and it lacks support, while the
damping struggles with rough terrain. You do not have to push too hard to
get it in tangle either and it is not long before the pegs start to tickle the road,
particularly with heavier riders on board.
Entering the Monteblanco racetrack for the first time, I did not have high
hopes for the new R’s suspension, for I had already brushed up against its

TVS had one of the largest stalls at the Expo with many bikes
on display. The first one to catch our eye was the Apache RTE
all-electric fully faired race bike. Said to be a part of the one-
make championship, the bike had most of its parts made of
carbon-fibre and looked beautiful in the white and blue livery.
The next thing to attract our attention as we walked inside the
stall was the V4CR on display by Norton Motorcycles. It may
be recalled that the British brand was acquired by TVS a few
years ago. At the moment, it is not clear whether the V4CR will
come to our country. TVS also had the Apache RTR 310, a

produced in collaboration with Alpinestars.
Hero MotoCorp
Hero MotoCorp had a line-up of all their current models
on show. We will cover the important ones like the 450
Rally bike that just landed Hero’s first ever podium finish
at the prestigious Dakar Rally, piloted by Motswana rider
Ross Branch. They also had the newly launched Mavrick
440 and Xtreme 125R alongside the Karizma CE001
concept, all revealed earlier at the Hero World event.
Hero’s electric division, Vida, had a very strong presence,
showcasing a number of scooters and off-road bikes.
Yamaha Honda
Yamaha’s stall had the YZF-R1M right at the At the heart of the Honda’s stall was a flex-fuel powered
entrance, followed by the rest of the faired CB300F. It is Honda’s first flex fuel variant developed

Bajaj Auto
Bajaj Auto were present with a flex fuel model of their naked street bike, the Pulsar
NS160. The Dominar 400 was also showcased and it was 27.5 per cent ethanol

manufacturers showcasing their flex fuel prototypes. Bajaj’s stall also had the Chetak
Premium that was recently unveiled. It is an electric scooter priced at Rs 1.44 lakh
(ex-showroom).
Suzuki
Suzuki India had a very strong presence with a variegated
display, with the flex-fuel powered Gixxer SF 250 taking centre
stage. Behind the Gixxer were two new bikes—the GSX-8R
lightweight sport bike and the V-Strom 800 DE adventure
tourer. The GSX-8R comes with the 776-cc parallel-twin and

It will compete with the likes of the Yamaha R7 and Aprilia RS

GSX-1300R Hayabusa and the Katana on display.

comes equipped with a 4.0-kWh lithium-ion battery pack and makes 9.0 kW
