If you are shortlisted to interview for a Chevening Scholarship, you will be invited
to attend an interview in your home country, in the city/town where the British
embassy or high commission has a representation.

Whilst you might naturally feel nervous in advance of the interview, do remember
that to have made it to the interview stage is a huge achievement and it means that
you are already one of the strongest candidates. An interview is a great opportunity
to really demonstrate why you should be selected for a scholarship and why you
should join the Chevening community.

Please ensure you are available for an interview during the global interview period.
Booking your interview
You will receive an email with instructions on how to book your interview.
Interview slots are available on a first-come-first-served basis, so we suggest that
you book your slot as soon as possible. Once you have scheduled your interview,
you will receive a booking confirmation email and your slot cannot be changed.

Applicants will be interviewed by the embassy or high commission from the

country/territory of award. Where necessary and practical, interviews can take
place online for those applying for awards. In 2021 due to COVID-19, interviews
successfully took place online in many countries/territories and we are confident
that we can provide applicants with a fair and smooth interview process in this
way. If you are shortlisted for a Chevening interview, you will be sent further
details including confirmation of whether interviews in your country/territory can
be held online.

Before your interview

Prior to attending your interview, you will be asked to upload the following
documents to the online application system:

 Education documents (copies of your original certificates and/or transcripts

in their original language).
 Two reference letters.
 A short biography that tells us more about you.
Preparing for your interview
You will need the following documents for your interview:

 Passport/national ID.

Additional documents may be requested in some countries/territories. You will be

informed about this in the email inviting you to interview.

The Chevening interview

The interview will be a competency-based panel assessment conducted in English.

The interview panel will include representatives from the British embassy or high
commission, who will use the global Chevening criteria to assess your answers.

You will be asked a series of questions discussing some of the information you
provided in the application form. The panel will ask questions that will enable you
to explain your personal and professional aspirations, and how Chevening can
facilitate your achievement of these goals. Your course choices will also be
discussed and you will be asked to provide an update on your applications.

Download transcript for ‘Camila and Jaffer’s top Chevening interview tips’ video
here (please note clicking here will start an automatic download of a Word
Document 12.6KB)
What should you expect after your interview?
All applicants will be informed of the outcome of their interview after the global
interview period, from around early to mid-June. Please do not contact your local
British embassy or high commission as updates on the status of your application
cannot be provided earlier.

You should not wait for the outcome of your interview to apply for your university
courses, you should apply for all three courses as early as possible. Any
unconditional offers received should be uploaded to the online application system
as soon as possible.

 FAQs

References are an integral part of Chevening’s selection process. You must supply
the names of two referees when you submit your application.

If your application is progressed to the next stage of the process, you will be
required to upload two reference letters to the online application system by the
relevant deadline.* Please note that Chevening will not contact your referees to
complete or upload references. It is the applicant’s responsibility to obtain and
upload references on behalf of referees.

At a later stage, the British embassy or high commission may contact your referees
for verification. We advise all applicants to submit two references to the online
application system prior to the deadline, and will only in exceptional circumstances
accept references submitted in person to the embassy or high commission during
interview. The British embassy or high commission in your home country may
request that you bring original hard copies of your references with you to
interview. You will receive further guidance on this if you are invited to interview.

*If you are applying for a Chevening Fellowship, this deadline may not apply. You
will be advised when you need to upload reference letters prior to your interview.

Who can be a referee?

Please select your referees carefully. They should be people who can comment on
your general suitability to receive a Chevening Scholarship or Fellowship.
Referees should be known to you, either in an academic or professional capacity.
They should not be a relative or close personal friend.

When approaching your referees, please direct them to the guidance section below
as it contains important information about what they should include in their
reference. We also recommend that you ask them to be a referee as early as
possible in order to ensure that they have enough time to complete their reference.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I change my referee details on the online application system?
If you need to change your referees before submitting your references prior to the
deadline listed on the application timeline, you can do this in the online system.
Login to your application and click on ‘Submitted/Under Review Applications’.
Click on ‘Open’ and go to section 3: ‘Application Information’. Scroll down to the
‘References’ section. Click on ‘Open’ against the referee you wish to change, then
click the ‘Edit Reference Details’ button and enter the details of the new referee.
Click ‘Save draft’ to confirm. If you decide to change your referees, you must
ensure that they still have enough time to complete their references by the deadline.
Can my references be submitted in another language?

References must be written in English. If you do not have two valid references by
the time of interview, you will not be considered for a Chevening Award.

If your referee has written their reference in another language, you can upload this
so long as you also upload a notarised translation in English of the original
reference. In these cases, the original reference and the notarised translation of the
reference must be contained within one file. It is the applicant’s responsibility to
arrange a notarised translation if required.

If a reference is submitted in a language other than English and does not have a
notarised English translation contained in the same document, we will not be able
to accept it.
How do I upload my references on the online application system?

To upload your references, please login to your application and click on

‘Submitted/Under Review Applications’. Click on ‘Open’ and go to section 5:
‘Upload documents and submit’. Scroll down to the ‘References’ section to upload
your two letters.

How many references do I need to upload?

You must upload two different references.

If you upload a reference in another language (along with its notarised English
translation) this must be in one file and counts as one of your reference uploads.

You can then upload your second reference.

The embassy in my country has temporarily suspended operations. Who

should I address my reference letters to?

If the embassy or high commission in your country/territory has temporarily

suspended operations, please address your reference letter to ‘Chevening Officer
[name of country or territory].’

Instructions for referees

Since references will be reviewed by the British embassy/high commission during
the latter stages of the selection process, it is important to provide as much relevant
detail as possible to support the applicant.

References must be written in English. Please see above for further details.

Your reference letter should be addressed to the British embassy/high commission

in the applicant’s country or territory. If the embassy or high commission in the
applicant’s country or territory has temporarily suspended operations, please
address your reference letter to ‘Chevening Officer [name of country or territory]’.
Once you have completed your reference, please return it to the applicant, who will
then upload the reference to the online application system.

Your reference should cover the following:

1. Your contact details: address, email address, and phone number

2. How long have you known the applicant?
3. In what capacity do you know the applicant? (e.g. professional, educational,
supervisory, voluntary, religious, etc.)
4. When did you last have regular contact with the applicant?
5. A brief overall endorsement of the applicant, including their:

o Skills in leadership and networking.
o Personal, intellectual, and interpersonal qualities.
o Ability to complete a demanding academic programme in the UK.

You must ensure that you meet the minimum work-experience requirement for the
scholarship before submitting your Chevening application. Chevening
Scholarships require that applicants have at least two years of work experience.

If you do not already have the required level of work experience, you will be
unable to submit your application.
Eligible types of work experience
The types of work experience that are eligible for Chevening can include:

 Full-time employment
 Part-time employment
 Voluntary work
 Paid or unpaid internships

Work experience can be completed before, during, or after graduating from your
undergraduate studies, however, any mandatory employment that counted towards
your undergraduate or postgraduate course would not be eligible.

You do not need to meet the work experience requirement in one period of
employment. Applicants can submit up to fifteen different employment periods in
order to meet the requirement. If you have held more than fifteen positions then
please enter the periods which make up the greatest number of hours worked.

If you are currently employed, it is not a requirement of Chevening that you resign
from your position. You are advised to discuss your application with your
employer and it is your responsibility to ensure that they will release you if you are
selected for a Chevening Scholarship. You can refer them to the employers
page on our website. The British embassy/high commission or the Chevening
Secretariat cannot intervene in this.
How to calculate your work experience
Your entries will be calculated automatically by multiplying the number of weeks
worked by the number of hours worked per week. For this calculation, a working
week comprises 35-60 hours and a working year comprises 40-50 weeks. Anything
that exceeds the upper limit for full-time employment will be deemed ineligible.

The minimum number of hours an applicant must have before applying for a
Chevening Scholarship is as follows:

 Chevening Scholarships – two years’ work experience = 2,800 hours

If you have worked part-time, the minimum requirement will have been
accumulated over a longer period.

Read our work experience blog post for more information about this.

Eligibility
Ineligible applications will be rejected, so it is important that
you check that you meet our eligibility criteria before you
start your application.
In this section

o Work experience

 Find a course
 Why study in the UK?
 FAQs

To be eligible for a Chevening Scholarship you must:

 Be a citizen of a Chevening-eligible country or territory.

 Return to your country of citizenship for a minimum of two years after your
award has ended.
 Have completed all components of an undergraduate degree that will enable
you to gain entry onto a postgraduate programme at a UK university by the
time you submit your application. This is typically equivalent to an upper
second-class 2:1 honours degree in the UK but may be different depending
on your course and university choice.
 Have at least two years (equivalent to 2,800 hours) of work experience.
 Apply to three different eligible UK university courses and have received an
unconditional offer from one of these choices by the deadline listed on
the application timeline.

You are not eligible for a Chevening Scholarship if you:

 Hold British or dual British citizenship (unless you are a citizen of a British
Overseas Territory or hold BN(O) and are applying from Hong Kong).
 Hold refugee status in a non-Chevening eligible country. Applicants who are
citizens of a Chevening-eligible country and who hold refugee status in a
Chevening-eligible country are eligible for a scholarship.
 Are an employee, a former employee, or relative* of an employee of His
Majesty’s Government, or have been within the last two years from the
opening of Chevening applications (including the Foreign, Commonwealth
and Development Office, all British Embassies/High Commissions, the
Home Office, the Ministry of Defence, the Department for Business, Energy
and Industrial Strategy, the Department for International Trade and the
UKVI), the British Council, a sponsoring UK university, or a staff member
of the Association of Commonwealth Universities.
 Employees, former employees, or relatives* of an employee of Chevening
Partner organisations are eligible to apply, but if the employment took place
within the last two years, you cannot receive a Chevening Partner Award
from the organisation from which you work, previously worked, or are
affiliated with through relatives.
 Have previously studied in the UK with funding from a UK Government-
funded scholarship.

Having a master’s degree does not prevent you from applying for a Chevening
Award to study for a second master’s degree in the UK, as long as you can clearly
explain why it will help you fulfil your career plan to influence positive change in
your home country.

Once submitted, applications undergo an electronic sift against our eligibility

criteria. Any applications deemed ineligible will be removed from the selection
process. Please see the list of common errors here. If you make these errors in your
application form, your application will be ineligible. Please note that once your
application has been submitted, it is not possible to change it retrospectively.
*Relatives are defined as parents or step-parents, siblings or step-siblings, children or step-
children, spouse, civil partner or unmarried partner (where the couple have been in a relationship
akin to marriage or civil partnership for at least two years)
