I. COMPOUND SENTENCES
1. An independent clause, For/And/ Nor/ But/ Or/ Yet/ So
EG:
- Japanese people live longer than most other nationalities, for they eat
healthy diet.
- They eat a lot of fish, and they eat lightly.
- They do not eat a lot of red meal, nor do they eat many dairy products.
- Diet is one factor in how long people live, but isn’t the only factor.
- People should limit the amount of animal fat in their diets, or they risk
getting heart disease.
- I was lost, so I bought a street map.
- I am very bad at Maths, yet my parents want me to study engineering.
2. Independent clause; Moreover/ Furthermore/ Therefore/ However
- Moreover = furthermore, besides, In addition
- Therefore = thus, fence, consequently, as a result, accordingly
- However = nevertheless, nonetheless
- On the other hand, in contrast
EG:
- She was unhappy; Therefore, it came as no surprise when she left.
- He said he had not discussed the matter with her; Furthermore, he had not
even contacted her.
- We thought the figures were correct; However, we have how discovered
some errors.
- It was a good car; Moreover, the price was quite reasonable.
- Tuiton at a community college is low; On the other hand, tuition at
private schools is high.
