Now, are you ready for our lesson this afternoon?

So now our topic this afternoon is about the Two types of

overhauls.

D. Presentation
Before we begin let me first show to you our objectives for
this lesson, please read.

At the end of the lesson the students will be able to:

a. Discuss the two types of overhauling,

b. Arranged the fundamental top overhaul

procedure and identified the engine’s internal
components

c. Recognize the significance of safety protocols and

ethical practices during overhauls.

Now class, what comes to your mind when you hear the
word, “overhaul?” It is about disassembling the engine sir.

Yes Ivan?

Good!
Overhauling sir means that the engine have damage.
Another one?

That is also correct.

Overhaul refers to the comprehensive examination, repair, and

restoration of a system, device, or mechanism to ensure its
optimal functioning.

However, overhaul is not a simple procedure, it is divided into

two types, and these are:

In-frame and out-of-frame overhaul.

Let’s start with the in-frame overhaul.

An in-frame overhaul, often referred to as an "in-chassis

overhaul," is a maintenance procedure performed on an internal
combustion engine without removing the engine from the
vehicle or equipment. This type of overhaul is common in the
automotive and heavy equipment industries and is designed to
address specific issues or refresh the engine's performance.

Typical tasks involved in an in-frame overhaul may include:

Cylinder Inspection and Honing:

Examining cylinder walls for wear, scratches, or damage.
Honing or machining cylinders to restore a smooth surface for
optimal piston movement.

Piston and Piston Ring Replacement:

Replacing pistons and piston rings to ensure proper compression
and combustion.

Bearing Replacement:
Inspecting and replacing main and connecting rod bearings to
address wear and prevent future issues.

Gasket Replacement:
Replacing gaskets and seals to prevent leaks and maintain
proper engine function.

Valve Train Inspection:

Checking and adjusting valve clearances.
Replacing worn valve components as needed.

Oil Pump and Timing Components:

Examining and replacing the oil pump if necessary.
Checking and adjusting timing components.

Benefits of in-frame overhaul:

1. Cost-effective
2. Time-efficient
3. Convenience
4. Less disruption to the Motorcycle
5. Preventive Maintenance

During an in-frame overhaul, the engine is disassembled to a

certain extent while it remains in the vehicle frame or chassis.
This allows for the inspection and replacement of key
components without the need for complete engine removal.

Again class, what is in-frame overhaul?

Yes Edmond?

Correct!
Yes sir
Now, class, is there anyone who wants an explanation on the in-
frame overhaul? None sir

If none, then I will be the one who’ll ask the question.

Give me a problem that suggests the need for an in-frame

overhaul, Armand.

Very good Armand.

Now, lets proceed to the out-of-frame overhaul. (Answers may vary)

When the internal components of a motorbike engine require
extensive maintenance or replacement, an out-of-frame
overhaul is required. This could be due to normal wear and tear,
poor performance, or a desire for more power and efficiency.
Technicians obtain better access to vital components by
removing the engine from the frame, allowing for a thorough
inspection and overhaul. These are the possible key components
to address:

Pistons and Rings:

 Inspection for wear, scoring, and proper clearances.
 Replacement of piston rings and consideration of
performance upgrades.
Cylinder Head:
 Valve inspection, replacement, or reseating.
 Examination of camshafts and rocker arms.
Crankshaft and Bearings:
 Inspection for play and wear.
 Replacement of main and connecting rod bearings.
Gaskets and Seals:
 Examination and replacement of gaskets and seals
throughout the engine.
 Ensuring a proper seal for optimal compression.
Timing Components:
 Inspection and adjustment of timing chains or belts.
 Timing synchronization for optimal engine performance.

Benefits of Out-of-Frame Overhaul:

1. Performance Enhancement
2. Extended Engine Life
3. Personal Satisfaction
The out-of-frame overhaul of a motorcycle engine is a journey
that demands technical know-how, patience, and a genuine
passion for the craft. Whether you are a seasoned mechanic or a
DIY enthusiast, this process provides an opportunity to breathe
new life into a beloved machine, unlocking its full potential on
the open road. Yes sir

Do you all get the significance and purpose of the out-of-frame

overhaul class?
How ever you must all remember these 3 things:
(Answer may vary)
Challenges and Considerations:
 Precision and Attention to Detail
 Parts Availability
 Documentation

Disadvantages of Overhaul: Yes sir!

 Cost
 Downtime
 Unforeseen Issues
 Skill and Expertise Requirement
 Parts Availability
 Upsetting the Balance
 Reduced Resale Value
 Warranty Considerations

2. Analysis

Is there anyone who needs clarification on our lecture this

afternoon?

Since none, I will be the one who will ask you a question.

What is our topic for today’s again class?

Excellent!

What overhaul class?

Very good!

What exactly is in-frame overhaul in your own language?

Awesome!

How about the out-of-frame overhaul?

Perfect!

3. Abstraction

What did you learn from our topic this afternoon? Anyone
from the class?

Who else?

Very good! So, who can share with me the difference

between repair and overhaul?

That’s correct!

Their target is their main difference.

Now, I'll call a name and pretend to be a customer. I'll tell

you about my motorcycle's problem, and you'll provide me
with a probable remedy.

“My motorcycle produces an excessive amount of white

smoke, what do you think is the problem and its solution?”
(Answer may vary)

Very good! Now another one,

The engine of my motorcycle vibrates unusually, and it has

this loud knocking noise. What do you think is the reason (Answer may vary)
for this issue? Also, what are my options?

Yes! That’s right!

(Answer may vary)

Now can someone tell me the advantages of overhaul.

How about the disadvantages?

Very good, it may restore the engine’s capability, however,

it will also come with challenges associated with it.

Now, why don’t we have an activity?

4. Application

Let us have a group activity, I will be dividing you into 2

groups. Each group will do a different task. I will give 5 (Answer may vary)
minutes each group to finish the task I have given.

Group 1

Directions: Write the step-by-step procedure of in-frame

overhaul. (The disassembling part only.)

(Answer may vary)

Group 2

Directions: Write at least 10 components inside the engine.

(Answer may vary)

After doing this task, each group will choose a

representative to present their work.

(Answer may vary)

V. EVALUATION

Directions: Read the following sentences. Write TRUE if the

statement is true and FALSE, if the statement is false.

1. Out-of-frame overhauls are always more time-efficient than

in-frame overhauls. 1. FALSE
2. In-frame overhauls are generally more cost-effective than out- 2. TRUE
of-frame overhauls due to reduced labor and disassembly. 3.FALSE
3. In-frame overhauls are not suitable for motorcycles with 4.TRUE
chronic overheating issues. 5.TRUE
4. This type of overhaul is convenient for targeted repairs 6.FALSE
without extensive disassembly. 7.TRUE
5. Preventive maintenance tasks like replacing gaskets and seals 8.TRUE
are well-suited for in-frame overhauls. 9.TRUE
6. Routine maintenance tasks like replacing spark plugs are more 10.FALSE
suitable for out-of-frame overhauls.
7. Out-of-frame overhauls may result in a more significant
increase in the motorcycle's resale value compared to in-frame
overhauls.
8. Severe internal engine damage, such as a thrown rod, often
requires an out-of-frame overhaul.
9. Out-of-frame overhauls are necessary for comprehensive
performance upgrades, including increasing displacement.
10. In-frame overhauls are always the preferred choice for
performance upgrades due to their simplicity.

VI. ASSIGNMENT

Directions: Write ten engine issues and respond to each

one.

That’s all for this afternoon. Goodbye class!

Goodbye Sir
