Page 1:
Q.1 Do you know any poems about fish?
Solution:
In the ocean deep and wide,
Fish swim with graceful glide.
Colours bright, scales shimmering true,
Underwater world, just for you!
Q.2 Try to use a square and a triangle to draw a fish.
Solution:

Page 2:
Q.1 ‘Meen means a fish and Meenakshi is a girl whose eyes look like a
fish. Can you think of someone who has such eyes? Draw a face with
fish eyes.
Solution:
Q.2 Fishes can have very different sizes. The smallest fish is about 1 cm
long. How long is the biggest fish you can imagine?
Solution:
I hope whale shark is the biggest fish and its length is around 12 meters.
Q.3 How many times longer is your big fish than the smallest fish?

Solution:

The length of smallest fish = 1 cm (From the last question)

The length of whale shark = 12 meters = 12 × 100 = 1200 cm
i.e., the whale shark is 1200 times longer than the smallest fish.
Page 3:
One whale shark was as long as 18 m. Just think how long that is – almost 12
children of your size standing one on top of the other! And guess what it
weighed? Well, much, much more than what 12 of you together weigh! Its
weight was about 16000 kg!
Q.1 About how many kilograms do you weigh? __________
Solution:
I weigh about 25 kilograms.
Q.2 So 12 children like you put together will weigh about_______ kg.
Solution:
The weight of 12 children like me = 12 × 30 = 360 kg.
Q.3 About how much more does the whale shark weigh than 12 children
like you put together?

Solution:

The weight of whale shark – the weight of 12 children like me

= 16000 – 360
= 15640 kg
Q.4 To see the difference between whales and fish look carefully at their
tails. Can you see that the fish tail stands flat along its body, but the
tail of the whale almost looks like two legs. Can you spot the fish in
the picture?

Solution:

Q.5 Fish like to swim together in the sea in big groups called ‘ schools” of
fish. In their school they feel safe from the bigger fish. (Do you feel
safe in your school?)
Solution:
Yes, I feel much safer in my school as my teachers are always there to care of
me.
Page 5 and Page 6:
Fishermen in their Boats
Q.1 How many of you have seen the sea? Where did you see it? Did you
see it in a movie or for real? How deep do you think the sea could be?
Find out.
Solution:
Almost of all of my friends and I have seen the sea. I saw the sea in
Vishakhapatnam. It was for real. My father told me that the see would me more
than 200 feet deep.
Q.2 Do you know how to swim?

Solution:

Yes, I know swimming. But I swim only in our school’s swimming pool. I am
scared of the high sea waves.
Q.3 Close your eyes and imagine the sea with waves rising high.
Solution:
Yes, I have imagined the sea with waves rising high. It looks lovely and little
scary as well.
Q.4 How high do you think the waves can go?

Solution:

The waves rise more than my father’s height. So I think they go up to 12 feet.
These log boats do not go very far. If the wind is helpful, they travel about 4 km
in one hour.
Q.1 How long will they take to go a distance of 10 km?

Solution:

It is given that the fishermen travel about 4 km in one hour.

In 2 hours, they travel 4 + 4 = 8 km.
Also, it takes half an hour to travel 2 km.
i.e., they take 2 hours + half an hour to travel 8 km + 2 km = 10 km.
Therefore, the time taken by them to go to a distance of 10 km is 2 and half
hours.

Q.2 Guess how far you can go in one hour if you walk fast.
Solution:

I think I can go up to 3 km in one hour if I walk fast.

Page 7:
Find out

Look at the sun and find out the direction from where it rises.

Q.1 From where you are, what interesting thing do you see to your east?

Solution:

I see the rising sun and a bird in the east.

Q.2 Name two things that are lying to your west.

Solution:

I see a hut, a tree and a boy to my west.

Look at the different types of boats.

Some boats have motors and go further into the sea. Since they go far out, they
can catch more fish. These boats travel faster, at the speed of about 20 km in
one hour.

Q.3 How far would the motorboats go in three and a half hours?

Solution:

The motorboats can go 20 km in one hour.

Thus, the distance they can go in 3 and half hours = 20 × 3.5 = 70 km.
Q.4 How much time will they take to go 85 km?

Solution:

The motorboats can go 20 km in one hour.

So the time that they take to go 85 km is, 85 ÷ 20 = 4.25 hours.

Here, 0.25 hours stand for ¼th of an hour which is 15 minites.

Hence, they take 4 hour 15 min to go to 85 km.

Page 9:
Q.1 Write a news report about the dangers faced by the fishes in our
rivers and seas.

Fish in rivers and seas are in danger. Pollution from trash and chemicals makes
it hard for them to breathe and find food. We need to work together to keep our
river and sea waters clean and protect the fish, so they can swim happily and
stay safe.

Which Boat Gets How Much?

In one trip, the log boat brings about 20 kg of fish. But other types of boats
bring a bigger catch, as given in the table. The table also shows the speed of
each type of boat, which is how far each boat goes in one hour. Look at the
table and calculate.

Type of boat Catch of fish in Speed of the boat (how

one trip (in kg) far it goes in one hour)
Log boat 20 4 km per hour
Long tail boat 600 12 km per hour
Motor boat 800 20 km per hour
Machine boat 6000 22 km per hour

(a) About how much fish in all will each type of boat bring in seven trips?

Type of Boat Catch of Fish in One Catch of Fish in 7

Trip (in kg) Trips (in kg)

Log boat 20 20 × 7 = 140

Long tail boat 600 600 × 7 = 4200

Motor boat 800 800 × 7 = 5600

Machine boat 6000 6000 × 7 = 42000

b) About how far can a motorboat go in six hours?

Solution:

Type of Boat How far it goes in one How far it goes in six
hour? hours?

Log boat 4 km per hour 4 × 6 = 24 km

Long tail boat 12 km per hour 12 × 6 = 72 km

Motor boat 20 km per hour 20 × 6 = 120 km

Machine boat 22 km per hour 22 × 6 = 132 km

c) If a long tail boat has to travel 60 km, how long will it take?

Solution:

It is given that long boat goes 12 km per hour.

So to travel 60 km, it will take 60 ÷ 12 = 5 hours.

Page 10:
Some Big, Big Numbers!

In the Class IV Math-Magic you heard of the number which is equal to a

hundred thousand. You had read that there are about one lakh brick kilns
in our country where bricks are made.

Q.1 What other things have you heard of in lakhs?

Solution:

I heard that

(i) The cost our car is 6 lakh rupees.

(ii) The cost of our bike is 2 lakh rupees.

(iii) The cost of our house is 60 lakh rupees.

Q.2 Write the number one thousand. Now, write one hundred thousand.
So how many zeroes are there in the number one lakh? Easy, isn’t it?

Solution:

One thousand = 1,000

Now one hundred thousand = 100 thousand = 100,000

Note that one hundred thousand is also known as “one lakh”.

Thus, the number of zeros in 1 lakh = 5.

Yes, I found it very easy.

Q.3 There are about two lakh boats in our country. Half of them are
without a motor. What is the number of boats with a motor? Write it.

Solution:

The number of boats in our country = 2 lakh = 2,00,000

Half of them are without motor. It means that the remaining half of them are
with a motor.

Thus, the number of boats with a motor = ½ of 2 lakh = 1 lakh = 1,00,000.

Q.4 About one-fourth of the boats with a motor are big machine boats.
How many thousand machine boats are there? Come on, try to do it
without writing it down.

Solution:

The number of boats with a motor in our country = 1 lakh = 1,00,000 (from
previous answer)

Number of machine boats = 1/4th of 1 lakh boats

= 100000/4

= 25000

Q.5 Where have you heard of a crore? What was the number used for?
Solution:

I heard of a crore when I saw news about the total population in T.V.

The word “crore” is used to represent very big numbers and 1 crore = 100 lakhs
= 1,00,00,000.

(Note: The number of zeros in crore is 7).

Page 11:
The Fish Market

Have you been to a fish market? If you have then you might know why a
very noisy place is sometimes called a ‘fish market’! This fish market is
busy today. 11 Many boats have brought a good catch. The fisherwomen
are shouting out their prices to the buyers.

Mini — ‘‘Come here! Come here! Take sardines at ₹ 40 a kg’’.

Gracy — ‘‘Never so cheap! Get sword-fish for ₹ 60 a kg’’.

Floramma sells prawns for ₹ 150 a kg.

Karuthamma sells squid for ₹ 50 a kg.

Look, Fazila can hardly carry this big kingfish! She says, ‘‘This fish weighs
8 kg. I will sell the whole for ₹ 1200’’.

Q.1 At what price per kg did Fazila sell the kingfish?

Solution:

Fazila said that she would sell the whole 8 kg kingfish for ₹ 1200.

Then the price of 1 kg kingfish = 1200 ÷ 8 = ₹ 150.

Q.2 Floramma has sold 10 kg prawns today. How much money did she
get for that?

Solution:

Floramma sells prawns for ₹ 150 a kg.

Thus, the amount earned by Floramma by selling 10 kg prawns = 10 × 150 = ₹

1500.

Q.3 Gracy sold 6 kg swordfish. Mini has earned as much money as

Gracy. How many kg of sardines did Mini sell?

Solution:

Gracy sells swordfish at ₹ 60 a kg.

Money earned by Gracy by selling 6 kg swordfish = 60 × 6 = ₹ 360.

Mini has earned as much money as Gracy.

Thus, money earned by Mini = ₹ 360 as well.

Mini sells sardines at ₹ 40 a kg.

Thus, the number of kg of sardines sold by Mini = 360 ÷ 40 = 9 kg.

Q.4 Basheer has ₹ 100. He spends one-fourth of the money on squid and
another three-fourth on prawns.

a. How many kilograms of squid did he buy?

Solution:

One-fourth of ₹ 100 is ₹ 25.

The cost of 1 kg squid = ₹ 50.

The amount of squid baught by Bahseer = 25 ÷ 50 = ½ kg.

b. How many kilograms of prawns did he buy?

Solution:

Three-fourth of ₹ 100 is ₹ 75.

The cost of 1 kg prawns = ₹ 150.

The amount of prawns baught by Basheer = 75 ÷ 150 = ½ kg.

Page 12:
Women’s ‘Meenkar Bank’

The meeting of the Meenkar Bank has just begun. Fazila is the president.
Twenty fisherwomen have made their own bank. Each saves ₹ 25 every
month and puts it in the bank.

Q.1 How much money does the group collect each month?

Solution:

Number of fisherwomen = 20.

The amount saved by each of them in one month = ₹ 25.

Thus, the amount saved by all fisherwomen each month = 20 × 25 = ₹ 500.

Q.2 How much money will be collected in ten years?

Solution:

From the previous answer, the amount collected in one month = ₹ 500.

The number of months in a year = 12.

Then the amount collected in 1 year = 500 × 12 = ₹ 6000.

Thus, the amount collected in ten years = 6000 × 10 = ₹ 60,000.

Practice Time:

Gracy needs money to buy a net. Jhansi and her sister want to buy a log
boat. So they take a loan from their bank. They will return it with interest.

a) Gracy took a loan of ₹ 4,000 to buy a net. She paid back ₹ 345 every
month for one year. How much money did she pay back to the Bank?

Solution:

The amount paid by Gracy to the bank each month = ₹ 345.

The number of months in a year = 12.

Thus, the amount paid by Gracy in 1 year = 345 × 12 = ₹ 4,140.

b) Jhansi and her sister took a loan of ₹ 21,000 to buy a log boat. They paid
back a total of ₹ 23,520 in one year. How much did they pay back every
month?

Solution:

The amount paid back in one year (12 months) = ₹ 23,520.

The amount paid back every month = 23520 ÷ 12 = ₹ 1,960.

Page 13:
Why Don’t We Start a New Fish-drying Factory?

The women of Meenkar Bank also want to start a factory to dry fish. The
Panchayat has given them some land for that. Over the years, they have
saved ₹ 74,000. They find out how much they will need for the factory.

Q.1 Fazila writes the things they need to buy to begin. See the table for
the cost of each item and the number of items they want to buy. Find
the total cost.

Total cost to set up the factory = ____________

Solution:

Item Price of Each Number of Items Cost

Bore well for fresh ₹ 3000 1 3000 × 1 = ₹ 3000

water

Bamboo rack for ₹ 2000 20 2000 × 20 = ₹

fish drying 40,000

Cement tank ₹ 1000 4 1000 × 4 = ₹ 4000

Tray and knife ₹ 300 20 300 × 20 = ₹ 6000

Bucket ₹ 75 20 75 × 20 = ₹ 1500

Total cost = 3000 + 40000 + 4000 + 6000 + 1500 = ₹ 54,500.

1
When fresh fish is dried, it becomes 3 its weight. In one month, they plan to
dry 6000 kg of fresh fish.

How much dried fish will they get in a month? ____________

Number of fish they dry in one month = 6000 kg.

1
Number of dried fish in month = 3 × 6000 = 2000 kg.

Q.2 Floramma – let us first calculate for 6 kg of fresh fish.

We buy fresh fish for ₹ 15 per kg.

We sell dried fish for ₹ 70 per kg.

(i) We dry 6 kg fresh fish to get _____ kg dried fish

1
Number of dried fish = 3 × 6 = 2 kg.

Thus, the answer for the given blank is 2.

(ii) For 6 kg fresh fish, we have to pay 6 × __ = ₹ 90

Solution:

The cost of fresh fish per kg = ₹ 15.

Thus, the cost of 6 kg fresh fish = 6 × 15 = ₹ 90.

Thus, the answer for the given blank is 15.

(iii) We will sell 2 kg dried fish and get 2 × __ = ₹ __

Solution:

The cost of dried fish per kg = ₹ 70.

Thus, the cost of 2 kg of dried fish = 2 × 70 = ₹ 140.

Thus first blank = 70 and the second blank = 140.

(iv) So if we dry 6 kg fresh fish, we will earn __ – 90 = ₹ __

Solution:

From the previous questions, the amount earned by drying 6 kg fresh fish = 140
– 90 = ₹ 50.

Thus the first blank = 140 and the second blank = 50.

(v) But if we dry 6000 kg, we can earn ₹ __ × 1000 in one month!

Solution:

By the last question, the amount earned by drying 6 kg fish = ₹ 50.

Thus, the amount earned by drying 6000 kg = 50 × 1000 = ₹ 50,000.

Thus, the answer for the blank is 50.

Q.3 Jhansi — I found that for 6000 kg fish, we would need 1500 kg salt
every month! Its price is Rs ₹ 2 per kg.

Monthly costs:

a) Salt 1500 × 2 = ₹ ____

Solution:

1500 × 2 = ₹ 3000

b) Packing and bus charges = ₹ 3000

So the total monthly cost of drying, packing and bus charges = ₹ ____

Fazila — That sounds very good! Our calculations tell us that every month our
Bank will earn ` 44,000!

Check to see if you also get the same answer.

Solution:

The total cost of salt, packing and bus charges = 3000 + 3000 = ₹ 6000.

From the question 2)v), the amount earned by drying 6000 kg fish = ₹ 50000.

Thus, the total cost of drying, packing and bus charges = 50000 – 6000 = ₹
44,000.

Yes, I got the same answer as Fazila.
