4. CLIMATIC CONDITIONS
1.1 This Engineering Standard defines the minimum requirements for the design, fabrication, testing and
inspection of air cooled heat exchangers for use with onshore production facilities. The use of this
specification shall be limited to operating temperatures above -30 C.
INSPECTOR: The individual(s) designated by COMPANY to act on COMPANY's behalf for all
matters relating to quality control, testing and acceptance of the work.
1.3 The specific requirements for each exchanger will be described on the data sheet(s).
1.4 All heat exchangers specified to handle hydrocarbon gas shall be designed for sour/corrosive
service as defined by NACE Standard MR-01-75. The application of non-corrosive service design
requirements and materials shall be limited to applications which are totally free of CO 2, H2S, water
and free oxygen, such as refrigerant, LPG/NGL, dry air and nitrogen.
2. CODE COMPLIANCE
2.1 The design, materials, fabrication, inspection and testing of air cooled heat exchanger equipment
shall be in accordance with the following specifications:
ASME code for Unfired Pressure Vessels, Section VIII, Division 1, latest edition (hereinafter
referred to as the ASME Code), or British Standard BS 5500, latest edition and COMPANY's
Specification for Pressure Vessels. Heat exchangers shall be Code stamped.
API Standard 661, Air-cooled Heat Exchangers for General Refinery Service (hereinafter referred
to as API 661).

2.2 CONTRACTOR shall advise COMPANY of all deviations to the standards quoted above and the
RFQ with his bid. All deviations shall have the written approval of COMPANY.
The following are modifications to API Standard 661. The paragraph numbers in this Section refer to those
of the Third Edition of that Standard. New paragraph numbers refer to additional requirements.
2.1.2 The number of copies of documents to be submitted with the proposal shall be as specified in
the RFQ.
2.2.13 The proposal shall include details of the proposed motors, transmissions and fans and their
arrangement.
2.2.14 The proposal shall include a thermal performance guarantee for the cooler design conditions.
Thermal sizing calculations shall also be included.
3.1.5 Welding procedures and procedure qualification records shall be submitted prior to fabrication.
3.2 The final records required in this Section shall be supplied in the form of three (3) manufacturer
data books. Contractor shall furthermore provide all construction drawings in electronic format
unless specifically agreed otherwise by COMPANY.
3.2.1.n The final records shall include all data required per COMPANY's Specification for Pressure
Vessels.
3.2.1.o The final records shall include as-built general arrangement drawings of the cooler showing
major dimensions in plan, elevation, nozzle size, orientation and location, motor/fan
arrangement, structural/support foundation details and a bill of materials.
4.1.1.2 The nozzle end header shall be fixed in position by hold down bolting. Free lateral movement of
the tube bundles shall be based on the full range of ambient and process temperatures
specified in the RFQ, but shall be a minimum of 15 mm in both directions from the 30 C
position.
4.1.1.13 Unless specified otherwise in the RFQ, the following minimum fouling resistances shall be used
for the applications indicated:
To allow for increasing pressure drop due to fouling, the pressure drop in the fouled condition
shall be obtained by multiplying the calculated pressure drop in clean condition by the
appropriate factor from the following table. The pressure drop in fouled condition shall be
indicated on the data sheet.
4.1.1.14 The air cooler thermal design shall be based on the outlet temperature specified in the RFQ
(ref. to 4.1.3.1 below), an ambient air temperature of 51°C and on the worst case duty. At
higher ambient temperatures higher outlet temperatures are acceptable; however, throughput
shall not be constrained.
CONTRACTOR shall guarantee the thermal performance of the exchanger when operated at
design conditions.
10% additional tube area above that required for the rated duty shall be provided.
Design shall allow for difference in thermal expansion between adjacent tubes.
4.1.1.16 Maximum allowable pressure drop over the tube side of the cooler shall be 0.35 bar.
4.1.3.1 Design temperatures shall comply with the requirements of the RFQ and/or the required duty
that may specified by either the Company or others (i.e. equipment supply vendor, when the
cooler need to be used in an auxiliary system in this equipment, e.g. L.O , cooling water, .etc.)
4.1.3.4 Design basis for fin type selection shall be CONTRACTOR's responsibility.
4.1.4.1 Design pressure shall comply with the requirements of the RFQ.
4.1.6.2 All coolers shall have plug type headers, designed to permit plugging of individual tubes.
4.1.9.6 Flange dimensions and facing shall be in accordance with ASME B16.5. Flanges shall be weld
neck raised face type for all ANSI classes. Flange gaskets shall comply with ANSI B16.20.
4.1.9.8.d Flanged connections shall comply with the ASME Code or BS 5500 and COMPANY's
Specification for Pressure Vessels.
4.1.9.13 Thermowells shall be located in the process piping, not in the nozzle.

4.1.9.14 Pressure gauge connections shall be located in the process piping, not in the nozzle.
4.1.9.16 Chemical cleaning connections are not required. However, all process gas coolers shall be
provided with glycol or methanol injection points for hydrate suppression.
4.1.9.20 Vent and drain connections shall be provided, minimum 1 and 2" respectively.
4.1.11.5 Tubes without a finned surface require specific written approval by COMPANY.
4.2.1.1 Coolers shall be designed for the environmental conditions specified in the RFQ.
4.2.1.2 Unless otherwise specified in the RFQ, airflow control shall be by means of variable speed
electric motors. Automatic pitch and/or automatic louver control shall not be used.
4.2.2.1 Sound pressure limits (in dB ref. 20 Pa), under any operating condition, at a distance of 1 m.
from the equipment surface, shall not exceed 87 dB(A).
4.2.6.9 Fan guards shall be provided with covered manholes to permit access to the fan blades.
4.2.7.2.1 Motors shall be three phase and suitable for operation on a 380V or 415V, 3-wire (no neutral),
50Hz supply and comply with COMPANY's Specification for Electric Motor Drivers.
All electric motors and electrical components and their installation shall be suitable for operation
in the appropriate hazardous area environment, but as a minimum be suitable for Zone 2
(Class1 Division 2) areas. Equipment shall be certified EEx ‘n’ (non-sparking) or supplied in
conformance with NEC requirements for electrical equipment in such areas. The nature and
extent of hazardous areas shall be as defined in API RP 500.
4.2.7.2.8 Electric motors shall be designed for operation in ambient conditions as specified in Section 4.
and the RFQ
4.2.7.2.9 A minimum 4" WF beam shall be installed over each motor-gear drive train combination to
facilitate removal of drive-train components for maintenance and/or replacement. The beam
shall be supported from the cooler structure, be designed to support the heaviest component of
the drive train and be aligned with the centerline of the drive train.
4.2.10.20 All coolers shall be equipped with manually operated louvers as specified in this clause.
4.2.11 Wire mesh screens shall be provided above the louvers of sufficient strength to protect against
mechanical damage.
4.3.1.5 All coolers shall be forced draft type in accordance with this Clause.
4.3.2.2 Vibration levels shall be verified. Each fan shall be equipped with a dedicated vibration switch.
4.3.3.1 If fireproofing is specified in the RFQ, CONTRACTOR shall advise the cooler manufacturer on
extent and weight.
The dead load shall be calculated with the exchanger filled with water.
4.3.3.6 Structures shall be designed for a wind load of 3600 N/m 2. Walkway(s), stair(s) and ladder(s)
shall be provided.
4.3.3.11 Specification of other loads, forces and moments shall be CONTRACTOR's responsibility.
4.3.5.1 CONTRACTOR shall provide such ladders, platforms, interconnecting walkways as required for
safe and unimpeded access to all items requiring routine maintenance. Access platforms shall
be provided at both tube header boxes to provide easy access for tube inspection, cleaning and
plugging.
4.3.5.2 Maintenance platforms in compliance with this Clause shall be provided. The design of the
platform shall be designed for the loading imposed by the lay-down of the heaviest maintenance
item, plus maintenance personnel.
4.3.5.8 Coolers shall have a minimum free headroom of 2.2 between the lowest point of the
plenum/header and grade.
5. Materials shall comply with the requirements of the ASME Code or BS 5500, API 661 and
COMPANY's Specification for Pressure Vessels. All materials shall be new and will be subject
to COMPANY approval.
The fins shall be aluminum or hot dipped galvanized steel.
Fans shall be aluminum or glass fiber reinforced plastic and suitable for operation at 110 Deg C.
5.1.11.1 Tubes for coolers in non-corrosive service shall be SB-111 seamless inhibited admiralty.
Corrosion allowance is not required.
5.1.11.2 For coolers in sour, corrosive service, the following supplemental requirements shall apply:
Pipe shall be ASTM A-312 TP 316L SMLS or ERW (ASTM A-358 Gr. 316L may be substituted
over 2" NPS).
6.1.1.1 Header welding shall be in accordance with the ASME Code or BS 5500 and COMPANY's
Specification for Pressure Vessels.
7.1.1 The responsibility for inspection in compliance with the ASME Code and API 661 shall rest with
the CONTRACTOR. However, COMPANY reserves the right to inspect, or to have his
INSPECTOR inspect heat exchangers at any time during their fabrication to assure himself that
the materials and workmanship are in accordance with this specification, the ASME Code, and
API 661.
7.1.2 CONTRACTOR shall furnish COMPANY with a fabrication, test and inspection schedule prior to
the start of shop work.
7.1.6 The approval of any work by COMPANY or his authorized representatives and his release of a
heat exchanger for shipment shall in no way relieve the CONTRACTOR of any responsibility for
carrying out the provisions of this specification or the RFQ.
7.2.3 Non-destructive examination shall be in compliance with API 661, the ASME Code or BS 5500
and COMPANY's Specification for Pressure Vessels.
7.3.1 Hydrostatic tests shall be in compliance with, API 661, the ASME Code or BS 5500 and
COMPANY's Specification for Pressure Vessels.
7.5.3 The nameplate shall be marked as specified on COMPANY's Specification for Pressure
Vessels.
7.5.5 All materials used for pressure retaining parts shall be marked as required by the ASME Code.
8.2.3 All non-galvanized carbon steel surfaces shall be coated in accordance with COMPANY's
Specification for Paint Systems.
Others:
The Contractor shall supply the following:
- A standard API 661 data sheets.
- Detailed thermal and mechanical calculations.
- Detailed general arrangement and dimensioned section drawings.
- Operating and maintenance manuals.
