Sample Solutions: This file contains some examples of how to complete the problems in this assignment: Genetics
Problems Samples
Background- Mr. and Mrs. Jones died in a tragic farm accident when the tractor they were riding rolled over in a ditch.
Authorities found $1,000,000,000 hidden in a feed bin in the chicken coop. Neighbors told authorities that the Jones’ had one
son, which they had not seen in many years. That son is the heir to the Jones’ fortune! Five men show up to claim the money
and the authorities must decide who is the real son. Also, this is a very poor country and they cannot afford DNA testing, so
they must rely on basic genetics (and you) to solve their problem.
Procedure- This investigation takes place in 3 parts. You MUST finish ONE PART at a time and in order, otherwise, you
will not come to the correct conclusion.

3. The men claiming to be the son are listed below. Write the GENOTYPES of each person next to the description:
Carl is homozygous brown eyed and has attached earlobes BB, ff,
Earl is heterozygous brown eyed and has heterozygous free earlobes Bb, Ff
3. The men claiming to be the son are listed below. Write the GENOTYPES of each person next to the description:
Note: Do not forget to account for the Y chromosome for all of the males in this problem.
1. Colorblindness is a recessive sex-linked trait (see your notes for more info.). Mr. Jones is color blind and Mrs.
Jones. Is homozygous normal. Make a Punnett square showing the possible genotypes of the Jones’ children:
x x
X Xx Xx
Y XY XY
2. The men claiming to be the son are listed below. Write the GENOTYPES of each person next to the description:
Carl is colorblind XY
Earl is colorblind XY
Robert is colorblind XY

2. Determine the phenotype for each genotype using the information provided about Smurfs.
3. For each phenotype, give the genotypes that are possible for the following traits of smurfberries.
4. Handy smurf recently met Smurfette at a dance. Handy Smurf is heterozygous for his short tail, but Smurfette has a
long tail. Create a Punnett square to show the possibilities that would result if Handy and Smurfette had children.

What are the chances of a child with a short tail? 2 out of 4 or 50%
What are the chances of a child with a long tail? 2 out of 4 or 50%

What are the chances of a child with a blue body? 3 out of 4 or 75%
What are the chances of a child with a yellow body? 1 out of 4 or 25%
6. Everyone in Smurfette’s family has light blue skin, which is the dominant trait for body color in her hometown of Smurf
Valley. Her family brags that they are a “true bred” or “purebred” line. She recently married a nice boy who has light yellow
skin, which is a recessive trait. Create a Punnett square to show the possibilities that would result if Smurfette and her new
husband had children.

What are the chances of a child with light blue skin? 4 out of 4 or 100%
7. Pappa smurf and his wife recently had a Lil’ Smurf, but it has not been a happy occasion for them. Mrs. Papa smurf has
been upset since she first saw her new baby who had a short tail. She claims that the hospital goofed and mixed up her baby
with someone else’s baby. Papa is homozygous for his long tail, while his wife is heterozygous for her short tail. Some
members of her family have a long tail, which is the recessive trait.

Did the hospital make a mistake? Explain your answer. I think they mixed it up. It is a 25% to 75% chance that a
childwith a short tail would born.
Smurfs love eating smilax! Their favorite smilax, smurfberries, are found in red, blue, and purple. Use the
information provided and your knowledge of incomplete dominance to complete each section below.
5. Write the correct genotype for each color if R represents a red gene and B represents a blue gene.
6. What would happen if Brainy Smurf crossed a red Smurfberry with a blue?
8. What would happen if Brainy Smurf crossed a purple Smurfberry with a blue Smurfberry?
a. If Brainy Smurf planted 100 seeds from this cross, how many should he expect to have of each
color?
Notes:
● Watch your percentages of offspring, you cannot have 200% total offspring for any problem.
● Do not forget to account for the Y chromosome for all of the males in this problem.
