M7L1 Genetics Review Problems

Name: Date:

Sample Solutions: This file contains some examples of how to complete the problems in this assignment: Genetics
Problems Samples

Background- Mr. and Mrs. Jones died in a tragic farm accident when the tractor they were riding rolled over in a ditch.
Authorities found $1,000,000,000 hidden in a feed bin in the chicken coop. Neighbors told authorities that the Jones’ had one
son, which they had not seen in many years. That son is the heir to the Jones’ fortune! Five men show up to claim the money
and the authorities must decide who is the real son. Also, this is a very poor country and they cannot afford DNA testing, so
they must rely on basic genetics (and you) to solve their problem.

Procedure- This investigation takes place in 3 parts. You MUST finish ONE PART at a time and in order, otherwise, you
will not come to the correct conclusion.

PART 1- (Classical Genetics)

1. Brown eyes (B) are dominant over blue eyes (b).
Mr. Jones is homozygous brown eyed and Mrs.
Jones is heterozygous brown-eyed. Make a
Punnett square showing the possible genotypes
of the Jones’ children:

B b

B BB Bb

B BB Bb

2. Free Ear Lobes (F) are dominant to attached ear lobes

(f). Mr. Jones is heterozygous free earlobes and Mrs.
Jones is heterozygous free earlobes. Make a Punnett
square showing the possible genotypes of the Jones’
children:

3. The men claiming to be the son are listed below. Write the GENOTYPES of each person next to the description:

Carl is homozygous brown eyed and has attached earlobes BB, ff,

Ray is blue eyed and has homozygous free earlobes bb, FF

Dale is homozygous brown-eyed and has heterozygous free earlobes BB, Ff

Earl is heterozygous brown eyed and has heterozygous free earlobes Bb, Ff

Robert is blue-eyed and has homozygous free earlobes bb, FF

Who IS NOT the Jones’ son? Ray and Robert

PART 2- (Codominance and Incomplete Dominance)
1. Type A and B blood are codominant to type O
blood (see your notes for more info.). Mr. Jones 2. Hair texture in humans shows incomplete
has homozygous type A blood and Mrs. Jones dominance. For hair, SS is straight hair and CC
has heterozygous type B blood. Make a Punnett is curly. SC is wavy hair. Mr. Jones has straight
square showing the possible genotypes of the hair and Mrs. Jones has wavy hair. Make a
Jones’ children: Punnett square showing the possible genotypes
of the Jones’ children:
A A
S S
B AB AB
S SS SS
o Ao Ao
Note: To make the results easier to read, there is C CS CS
no need to use the notation IA, etc. Simply use
the blood type letters A, B, O.

3. The men claiming to be the son are listed below. Write the GENOTYPES of each person next to the description:

Carl is heterozygous type A blood and wavy hair Ao, CS

Ray is type AB and curly hair AB,CC

Dale is heterozygous type A blood and wavy hair Ao, CS

Earl is type O blood and straight hair o, SS

Robert is type O and wavy hair o, CS

Who IS NOT the Jones’ son? Earl, Ray, Robert, Carl

PART 3- (Sex-Linked Traits)

Note: Do not forget to account for the Y chromosome for all of the males in this problem.
1. Colorblindness is a recessive sex-linked trait (see your notes for more info.). Mr. Jones is color blind and Mrs.
Jones. Is homozygous normal. Make a Punnett square showing the possible genotypes of the Jones’ children:

x x

X Xx Xx

Y XY XY

2. The men claiming to be the son are listed below. Write the GENOTYPES of each person next to the description:

Carl is colorblind XY

Ray has normal vision xY

Dale has normal vision xY

Earl is colorblind XY

Robert is colorblind XY

Who IS NOT the Jones’ son? Carl, Robert, Earl

Based on the answers to parts 1, 2, and 3 above:

So, WHO GETS THE MONEY?? Dale

OTHER PRACTICE
Scientists at Smurfville have been investigating the genetic makeup of the organisms in this community.
Use the information provided and your knowledge of genetics to answer each question.

1. For each genotype below, indicate whether it is a He (heterozygous) OR Ho (homozygous).

TT Ho Bb He DD Ho Ff He tt Ho dd Ho

Dd He ff Ho Tt He bb Ho BB Ho FF Ho

2. Determine the phenotype for each genotype using the information provided about Smurfs.

Blue body color is dominant to yellow.

BB Homozygous blue Bb Heterozygous Blue bb Homozygous Yellow

b. Short tail is dominant to long tail.

SS Homozygous Short tail Ss Heterozygous Short tail ss Homozygous Long tail

3. For each phenotype, give the genotypes that are possible for the following traits of smurfberries.

A tall head (T) is dominant to short (t)

Tall TT, Tt Short tt, Tt

Blue body color (B) is dominant to yellow (b)

Blue body BB, Bb Yellow body bb, Bb

4. Handy smurf recently met Smurfette at a dance. Handy Smurf is heterozygous for his short tail, but Smurfette has a
long tail. Create a Punnett square to show the possibilities that would result if Handy and Smurfette had children.

5. Brainy Smurf met Smurfette’s long lost sister at the dance. Both of them are heterozygous for their blue body color. Create
a Punnett square to show the possibilities that would result if Brainy and the long lost cousin had children.

What are the chances of a child with a yellow body? 1 out of 4 or 25%

6. Everyone in Smurfette’s family has light blue skin, which is the dominant trait for body color in her hometown of Smurf
Valley. Her family brags that they are a “true bred” or “purebred” line. She recently married a nice boy who has light yellow
skin, which is a recessive trait. Create a Punnett square to show the possibilities that would result if Smurfette and her new
husband had children.

Genotypic ratio Bb

Phenotypic ratio Bb 4:4

What are the chances of a child with light blue skin? 4 out of 4 or 100%

What are the chances of a child with yellow skin? 0 out of 4 or 0%

7. Pappa smurf and his wife recently had a Lil’ Smurf, but it has not been a happy occasion for them. Mrs. Papa smurf has
been upset since she first saw her new baby who had a short tail. She claims that the hospital goofed and mixed up her baby
with someone else’s baby. Papa is homozygous for his long tail, while his wife is heterozygous for her short tail. Some
members of her family have a long tail, which is the recessive trait.
