1. Individual Case Study
Recently, there has been a complex debate regarding the Ministry of Religion's encouragement
to restrict the decibel levels of the sound system for Adzan. Following the media statement,
people have polarized into pro and contra camps, each with various reasons to support their
stance. However, many overlook that the core of the debate stems from cultural and traditional
practices where sound regulation has not been a standard.
In recent years, France has implemented strict secular policies, including a ban on wearing
conspicuous religious symbols, such as the hijab, in public schools. This policy has sparked
debates around cultural and religious freedoms versus state secularism and the integration of
immigrant communities. Supporters argue that the ban promotes secularism and gender equality,
while opponents claim it infringes on religious freedom and targets specific communities.
1. Identify the Core Issues: Discuss the cultural, social, and political aspects that are at
play in each case study.
2. Analyze the Arguments: Summarize the main arguments from both the pro and contra
sides.
3. Reflect on Cultural Sensitivity: Consider how cultural traditions and values influence
the perspectives in each case. Reflect on your own cultural background and how it shapes
your view.
4. Propose Solutions: Suggest ways to address these issues that take into account cultural
sensitivities and promote mutual understanding.
Deliverables: Write a 2-3 page report analyzing the issues, arguments, and possible solutions for
each case study. Ensure your analysis is well-supported by references to relevant cultural
theories and concepts discussed in class.
2. Group Video Project Assignment
Objective: Students will work in groups to produce a video that explores cultural competency
and the need for cultural acceptance. The video should depict stories that highlight the challenges
and solutions in navigating intercultural interactions.
Deliverables:
1. Script: Submit a detailed screenplay script (2-3 pages) before starting the video
production.
2. Video: A final edited video (5-10 minutes) showcasing the story/stories and highlighting
key messages about cultural competency.
