Ch13: SOUND
ASSIGNMENT (ANSWER KEY)
1 Fill in the blanks:
a)The time taken by a vibrating body to complete one
oscillation is called its time period.
b)Loudness of sound is determined by the amplitude of
vibration.
c) The SI unit of frequency is Hertz.
d)Name the sound producing organ in humans. Larynx
e) Name that part of ear which vibrates when sound from
surroundings falls on it. Ear drum
f) Wavelength is the distance between two successive crests
and troughs.
2 A vibrating body makes 20 oscillations in 40
seconds .Calculate its time period and frequency.
Ans: Time period= Total time/ no. of oscillations
Time Period= 40/20=2 sec
Frequency=1/time period=1/2=0.5Hz
3 Musical instrument Termed as Vibrating part
Flute, Trumpet Wind Air column
instrument
Tabla, Dholak Percussion Stretched membrane
instrument
Guitar, Veena String Stretched string
instrument
4 A man stands at a distance from a cliff and claps his hands. He
receives an echo from the cliff after 4 s. Calculate the distance
between the man and the cliff. Assume the speed of sound to be
343 ms-1in air.
Ans: Let the distance between the person and the cliff is X m.
Speed of sound in air= 343m/s, Echo time= 4sec
Speed= distance/time
343= 2X/4 ( total distance covered by the sound= 2X)
(343x 4)/2=X or 1372/2= 686m
5 Name the three tiny bones present in the middle part of the
human ear. Also, state the function of these tiny bones present
in the human ear.
Ans: Hammer (malleus), Anvil(incus) and stirrup(stapes) are
the bones present in human ear. They amplify the sound signals
received from ear drum.
6 What is the effect of the following on a sound wave?
a. Amplitude: It determines the loudness of sound wave. If
amplitude is more, sound will be louder and if it is less,
sound will be feeble.
b. Frequency: It determines the pitch of the sound. High
frequency will result in shriller sound and low frequency
results in low pitch or flat sound.
7 Why a sound cannot be heard on moon?
As there is no air (atmosphere) on moon to carry the sound
vibrations forward so sound can’t be heard on moon.
8 Name the nerve which carries electrical impulses from cochlea
to the brain.
Ans: Auditory nerve
9. Complete the analogies.
a. Ultrasonic sound: Above 20,000Hz::Infrasonic sound:
Below 20 Hz
b. Unwanted sound: Noise pollution:: Pleasant sound: Music
c. Speed of sound in air:340m/s approx:: Speed of sound in
water:1450m/s approx
10. Draw two sound waves having:
a. Same pitch/frequency and different loudness/amplitude.

b. Same loudness/amplitude and different pitch/frequency.
