EQUILIBRIUM CALCULATIONS: EXAMPLES

Example 1
The equilibrium constant for the reaction given by the equation:
2HI(g)  H2(g) + I2(g) is 48.8 at 455°C.
A mixture at equilibrium in a 2.0 L vessel at this temperature contains 0.220 mol of H2 and
0.110 mol of I2.
Calculate the concentration of HI in this mixture.

Example 2

A student analyses the equilibrium system below in a 2.00 L vessel at 440C according to the
following equation:

H2 (g) + I2 (g)  2HI (g) K2 = 4.0 at 440C

The student determines the concentrations of each gas to be

i. [H2] = 0.30 mol L-1

ii. [I2] = 0.30 mol L-1

iii. [HI] = 3.0 mol L-1

What is the value of the concentration fraction (Q) and how must the system move to achieve
equilibrium?
Example 3

Dinitrogen tetroxide, N O (g), dissociates to form nitrogen dioxide, NO (g), according to the

equation: N O (g)  2NO (g)
2 4 2
0.45 mol of N O gas is placed in an empty 1.00 L vessel at 100°C.

When the system reaches equilibrium, there is 0.36 mol of NO gas present in the vessel.

Calculate the value of the equilibrium constant for this reaction at 100°C.

Example 4
At a particular temperature, 0.0500 mol SO2 and 0.01mol O2 and 0.1500 mol SO3 were mixed in
a 2L container and allowed to react according to the equation:

0.1400mol SO3 was left at equilibrium. Calculate the value of the equilibrium constant at this
temperature.
