I-20 Checklist for Admitted Students

Congratulations on receiving your I-20! These are your next steps:


1. Check your I-20 for accuracy
2. Pay the SEVIS I-901 fee
3. Complete the DS-160 visa application
4. Pay the non-refundable visa application fee
5. Schedule your visa interview with the U.S. Consulate or Embassy

1. Check your I-20 for accuracy


a. Your SEVIS ID is listed at the top right hand corner of your I-20.
b. The Saint Louis University school code is listed above (KAN 214F10192000).
c. Ensure that the information listed on your I-20 is accurate:
• Your name as it appears in your passport
• Program of study
• Country of birth
• Country of citizenship
• Date of birth
• Financial information
d. If anything is listed incorrectly, please contact the Office of International Services immediately
to make a correction.
e. After checking for accuracy, sign and date your I-20.
2. Pay the SEVIS I-901 fee
(If you have already paid the SEVIS fee, you do not need to make another payment)
a. Your SEVIS fee is $350 USD.
b. You may make your payment online. Go to ice.gov/sevis/i901 for an instructional video.
c. In order to make your payment, you will need your SEVIS ID (located on your I-20) and the
school code (KAN 214F10192000).

3. Complete the DS-160 visa application


a. The DS-160 visa application is for the F-1 student visa.
b. Complete the visa application (DS-160) at ceac.state.gov/genniv/.
• You will upload your photo while completing the online Form DS-160. For photo requirements,
visit travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/us-visas/visa-information-resources/photos.html.
• You will need to pay your SEVIS I-901 fee before you complete the application for the visa.
c. Print the application confirmation page to bring to your interview.
d. For additional online resources, visit travel.state.gov and studyinthestates.dhs.gov.
4. Pay the non-refundable visa application fee
a. The fee for the DS-160 visa application is $185 USD.
b. The receipt is valid for one year.
5. Schedule an appointment for your visa interview with the U.S. consulate/embassy
a. Visas for new students can be issued up to 365 days prior to the start date for a course of study,
however, you will not be allowed to enter the United States on your student visa more than 30 days
before the start date.
b. The semester begins with our mandatory International Orientation. Summer: May 15; Fall: Aug. 13.
c. Wait times for interview appointments vary by location, season, and visa category, so you should apply
for your visa early. Find and review Wait times/Open times for your specific embassy at usembassy.gov.
6. Prepare for the visa interview
a. Students must be specific and honest when answering questions during the interview.
b. The consular office will focus on three main factors during the interview:
• Clear study plan
• Financial independence
• Students’ ties to their home country
7. Items to bring to your visa interview
• Receipt of the visa application fee payment ($185)
• Receipt of the I-901 SEVIS fee payment ($350)
• Form I-20 signed by student and DSO
• Online Nonimmigrant Visa Application (DS-160) confirmation page
• Passport valid for at least six months after you plan to enter the U.S.
• Two-inch by two-inch photo of yourself; two copies
• Proof of funding
• Affidavit of Support (if applicable)
• Admission letter from the University
• Reference letter/Employment letter, if applicable

8. You’ve received your visa... What’s next?


a. Find helpful information below:
• MySLU – for help, contact our IT Service Desk 314-977-4000 or slu.edu/its/password-help.php
• Housing – slu.edu
• Deposit – slu.flywire.com
• Pre-arrival webinar dates – slu.edu/international-services/study/arrival
b. Prepare to travel to the United States.
c. Plan your trip so that you arrive in the United States no more than 30 days before your program start
date (Summer: May 15; Fall: Aug. 13). This date is listed on your I-20 as the “Earliest Admission Date.”
d. Watch your @slu.edu email for pre-arrival information:
• Housing
• Insurance
• Vaccinations
• Immigration compliance
• Billing and payment
• Course registration
• Dates for webinars
• Placement testing (Math, English)

CONFIRM YOUR ENROLLMENT
In order to confirm your enrollment at Saint Louis University, you must submit your
deposit payment ($500 USD undergraduate or $350 USD graduate). In addition
to attendance, this will secure your awarded scholarships, enable you to receive

communication through your SLU email and allow you to attend pre-arrival webinars.
