2. Analysis
What is rational equation?
How to solve rational equation?
What is an extraneous solution of a rational equations?
3. Abstraction
Definition of Terms
Rational Expression - is a fraction whose numerator and denominator are both
A
polynomials. It can be written in the form , where A and B are both polynomials, and
B
B≠ 0 .
2
3 x−2 x +1
Example:
x−2 x−1 x+ 6
2 3
2. Solve = .
x+7 x + 4
y +3 4
3. Solve =
y−1 y−1
Solutions (or roots) – values that satisfy a given rational equation
Example:
6
The value x=3 is a solution to the rational equation =3.
x−1
Extraneous solutions – values that emerge from the process of solving the
equation but do not satisfy a given rational equation because it makes some
quantities in the equation undefined.
Example:
5 x−10
In solving 2
=1 , x will be equal to 2 and 3. However, 2 is an extraneous solution since
x −4
using 2 as a value of x makes the denominator equal to zero; thus, the rational expression will be
undefined.
4. Application
The teacher will conduct an activity entitled “Decode Me”.
The teacher will flash the slide from her PowerPoint Presentation that contains the
question box and answer box.
Direction: Find the message by finding the value of x in each rational equation in the
question box. Then, write the corresponding word of your answer in the answer box.
