Valves:

 Gate Valve:

o Is the most widely used in industrial piping, That’s because most valves are needed as
stop valves to fully shut off or fully turn on flow, the only job for which gate valves are
recommended.
o As shown above, fluids flow through gate valves in a straight line. This construction
offers little resistance to flow and reduces pressure drop to a minimum.
o A gate-like disc actuated by stem screw and handwheel—moves up and down at right
angles to the path of flow, and seats against two seat faces to shut off flow.
o Gate valves are best for services that require infrequent valve operation  where the
disc is kept either fully opened or closed (They’re not practical for throttling).
o Close regulation is impossible. Velocity of flow against a partly opened disc may cause
vibration and chattering, and result in damage to the seating surfaces. Also, when
throttled, the disc is subjected to severe wire-drawing erosive effects.
o A Gate Valve usually requires more turns- more work- to open fully.
o Unlike many globe valves, the volume of flow through the valve is not in direct relation to
the number of turns of the handwheel.
