Experiment # 01

“Abrasion Value Of Aggregate”

Standard

• ASTM C535
• AASHTO T-96

Specifications

• Initial weight of sample, W1 = 5000g

• Rotation Speed = 30-33 rpm
• Set total number of rotation / revolutions = 500
• 11 charges are used while performing the experiment.
• W2 = weight of passing .

Apparatus

• Los Angel’s Abrasion Machine

Procedure
• Select the grading to be used in the test such that it should be related to the
grading to be used in construction, to the maximum extent as possible.
• Take 5 kg of sample for grading A, B, C , D.
• Choose the charges depending on grading of aggregates.
• Place the aggregates and charge on the cylinder and fix the cover.
• Rotate the machine at a speed of 30 to 33 revolutions per minute. The number of
revolutions is 500 for grading A, B, C & D
• Machine should be balanced and driven such that there is uniform peripheral
speed.
• The machine is stopped after the desired number of revolutions and material is
discharged to a tray.
• The entire stone dust is sieved on 1.7 mm IS sieve.
• The material coarser than 1.7mm size is weighed correct to one gram.
OBSERVATION AND CALCULATION

 Abrasion Value = W2/W1 * 100

 W1 = 5000 g
 W2 = 1100.9 g
𝑨𝒃𝒓𝒂𝒔𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝑽𝒂𝒍𝒖𝒆 = 1100.9/5000 = 0.22018 *100 = 22.018%

CONCLUSION

 As for sub-base the abrasion value should be less than 50%

 for base layer Abrasion value should be less than or equal to 40%.
 And the sample tested has an abrasion value = 22.018% (<40%). and it
means that the sample is perfectly fit for both rigid and flexible pavement.

Experiment # 02

“Aggregate Impact Value Test”

Standard

• ASTM D5874-02

Specifications

 Initial weight of sample (A)

 Weight passed from 2.36mm (B)
 Hammer weight = 14kg
 Height of drop of hammer =38cm
 Diameter of cup =10.2cm
 Depth of cup =5cm

Apparatus

 Aggregate Impact Tester

Procedure

 Initially we select some aggregates from the acervation of aggregates

 Weight the initially selected aggregates
 Now pour the aggregates into set of sieves of 14mm, 10mm, and pan which
are arranged in descending order
 Now after shaking for 5 min select those aggregates which have passed from
14mm sieve and retained on 10mm sieve
 Place the selected aggregate in the cup of tester in 3 layers
 Now give 15 blows to the sample by the hammer
 After hammering pour the sample into sieve number 2.36mm sieve , also
attach pan at the end of the sieve
 After shaking for 5 min select the aggregate which have passed from
2.36mm sieve
 Calculate impact value as shown below:

Impact Value = B/A*100

OBSERVATION AND CALCULATION

A =1000 gm
B= 238.75 gm
Impact Value = 238.75/1000 = 0.23875*100 = 23.875%

CONCLUSION

 If Impact value is less than 10% then we have exceptionally strong

aggregates
 If impact value is between (10-20) % then we strong aggregates
 If Impact value is between (20-30) % then we have satisfactory aggregates
