SALASTAMBHA DYNASTY / MLECHCHA DYNASTY


SALASTAMBHA (c. 655 - 675 AD)
- Shifted the capital Hatakeswara or Haruppeswara (present Tezpur area). Capital was named after the name
of his tutelary deity Hataka or Hetuka Sulin.

SRI HARSHADEVA (c. 725 – 750 AD)


- He was described as Gaudradi-Kalinga-Kosala-pati in the Pashupati epigraph of the Nepal Lichchavi king
Jayadeva II with whom Harsha had a marriage alliance.
HARJARAVARMAN (c. 815 – 835 AD)

- Birpal / Gayapal was the founder of Chutiya - Bisu (Biswa Singha) founded the Koch Kingdom in

RUDRA SINGHA (1696-1714)

• Abolished the custom of beheading a man before ascending the Singarighar and substituted a buffalo for
the occasion.
• Policy of divide and rule – Synod of Garhgaon (1702) – it debarred the Sudra Mahantas from initiating the
Brahmanas.
• There were a number of poets and scholars in his court. The most notable was Kabiraj Chakravarty who
composed the famous drama Sankha-Chuda-Badha, and had also translated the Abhijnanam Sakuntalam
and Brahma Vaivarta Purana into Assamese.
• He planned to form a confederacy of the Hindu rajas to free eastern India from the Muslim rule. However,
he died before execution of this plan.
• Rudra Singha’s inclination towards Sakta Hinduism increased as he grew older and at last he decided to
formally embrace that religion. A Sakta Brahmin priest Krishnaram Nyayavagish was summoned from
Bengal for this purpose. But the king died before having his initiation. He however instructed his sons to
accept the Bengali priest as their religious preceptor and establish him on the Nilachala hill, for which the
priest came to be known as Parvatiya Gohain.
• Rudrasingha was desirous that more brick structures should be constructed in the kingdom. He had a
khanikar or mason named Ghahasyam brought all the way from Kochbehar to train up a band of assistants.

o East India Company annexed the lower Assam upto


Biswanath in 1828.
o In 1833 British signed the treaty of Gauhati and Upper
Assam was handed over to Purandar Singha. But after
5 years, in 1838, Upper Assam was annexed by the
British.
o Govinda Chandra was assassinated in 1830 (caused by
Gambhir Singh of Manipur). He did not have any male
heir. Cachar was annexed in 1832.
o Tularam revolted but he was suppressed and ceded
some territory. Tularam died in 1850. In 1854 North
Cachar was annexed.
o Ram Singh dies in 1832. He was succeeded by his
seventeen year old grand nephew Rajendra Singh.
Jayantia was annexed in 1835.
o Taking advantage of some internal strife in Muttock
kingdom, in December 1839, entire Muttock territory
was annexed by the British.
