Bones

• Form the supporting framework of the body


• Form the levers on which muscles act (movement)
• Protects internal organs
• Act as calcium and phosphorus stores; 99% of the
body’s calcium is stored in bone
• Contains “bone marrow” which is the site for
haemopoeisis
Types of Bone
According to shape
• Long bones
• Short bones
• Flat bones
• Irregular bones
According to structure
• Compact bone
• Cancellous (spongy) bone
Long bone

Consists of:

1. Body (shaft)
2. Two ends
(epiphyses)
3. Medullary cavity
(bone marrow)
Irregular Bones
• Some bones of the cranial cavity
• Contain air-filled spaces
• Vertebrae
• Sacrum
• Pelvic bones
