Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates to fill the following

positions at the University of Zimbabwe:

Department of Space Science and Applied Physics

1. Chief Technician
Qualifications Experience and Attributes
Applicants should have:
 A level Physics and Mathematics and the City & Guilds Advance Diploma or HND in Physics
with Electronics or Telecommunication Systems.
 At least five (5) years’ experience as Senior Technician in a Physics Laboratory at a
University.
 BSc in Electronics or Telecommunication Systems and experience in a University set-up or
Tertiary institution is an added advantage.

Duties
 Supervision of all laboratory practicals.
 Supervision of construction, repair and storage of equipment.
 Carrying out annual inventories of equipment.
 Assisting students with their projects and staff with their research and field projects.
 On the job training of junior technical staff.
 Assigning of duties to technical and cleaning staff, and arranging their leave.
 Ordering of capital equipment from both local and external sources.
 Purchasing and issuing of consumables.
 Computing technical departmental semester requirements and budgets
 Keeping track of Departmental vehicles and their servicing.
 Liaising with Department of Support Services in respect of maintenance and repairs of the
buildings.
 Ensuring the security of the department and equipment.
 Any other duties reasonable duties in the confines of the role of the Chief Technician and
or as assigned by the Chairperson of the Space Science and Physics Department.
2. Meteorology Technician/Senior Technician (1 Post)

Qualifications, Experience and Attributes


Applicants should have:
 Interested person should have completed the Basic Instructions Package for
Meteorological Technician course (BIP-MET)
 At least 5 years’ experience or any equivalent qualifications.
 A BSc in Meteorology or Climate Science is an added advantage.

Duties
 Familiarise and expose students to meteorological equipment.
 Calibration of meteorological equipment.
 Familiarise students to setting up Automatic Weather Stations as well as gathering and
managing data.
 Carry out cloud observations with students.
 Synoptic coding and decoding of meteorological observations.
 Introducing weather charts and streamline analysis concepts.
 Plotting, analyzing and prognosis of surface and upper air weather features.
 Training students to access and process basic remote sensing data for weather analysis
and forecasting.
 Interpret charts for weather forecasting.
 Familiarise students to meteograms.
 Familiarise students to aviation and public weather codes and forecasts.
 Any other reasonable duties in the confines of the role of the Senior Technician as
assigned by the Chairperson of the Space Science and Physics Department.

3. Industrial Physics Technician/Senior Technician (1 Post)


Qualifications, Experience and Attributes
Applicants should have:
 City & Guilds Advanced Diploma, HND in Physics with Electronics and Telecommunication
System or any equivalent qualification.
 Five (5) years’ experience as a Technician in an Electronics, Physics laboratory.
 A BSc in Physics, Electronics and Telecommunications System and experience in a
University set up or Tertiary Institution is an added advantage.
Duties
 Supervision of all laboratory practical sessions.
 Supervision of construction, repairs and storage of equipment within the Department.
 Carrying out of annual inventories of equipment within the Department.

4. Material Science Technician/Senior Technician (1 Post)


Qualifications, Experience and Attributes
Applicants should have:
 Advanced Diploma in Material Engineering, HND in Physics and Chemistry or any
equivalent qualification.
 Five (5) years’ experience as a Technician in a Material Engineering/Chemistry Laboratory.
 A degree in Materials Science/Engineering will be an added advantage.

Duties
 Supervision of all laboratory practical sessions.
 Supervision of construction, repairs and storage of equipment within the Department.
 Carrying out of annual inventories of equipment within the Department.
 Assisting students and staff with their research and field projects.
 On the job training of Junior Technical Staff.
 Assigning of duties and supervision of Technical and Cleaning Staff and arranging of their
leave.
 In the absence of the Chief Technician, ordering of consumables, capital equipment from
both local and external sources.
 Assist the Chief Technician with computing technical departmental semester
requirements and budgets.
 Liaising with Department of Support Services in respect of maintenance and repairs of the
buildings.
 Any other reasonable duties in the confines of the role of the Senior Technician as
assigned by the Chairperson of the Space Science and Physics Department.
