Part I: Introduction
CHAPTER 1: The GRE Quantitative Reasoning Sections
Because the people preparing to take the GRE have widely varying
backgrounds and experiences in mathematics, this book provides an
orientation to the mathematics content of the tests, an introduction
to the formats used for the mathematics test questions, and practice
with multiple-choice mathematics questions. There is an explanation
of the quantitative comparison questions, data interpretation
questions, numeric entry questions, and multiple-response questions
that appear on the GRE. Many of the questions are general problem-
solving questions in a multiple-choice format with five answer
choices.
The Quantitative Reasoning sections of the computer-based GRE
each has twenty (20) questions with a thirty-five (35) minute time
limit. On the paper-based GRE the two Quantitative Reasoning
sections each has twenty-five questions with a forty (40) minute
time limit.
The mathematics review is quite comprehensive; explanations,
example problems, and practice problems cover arithmetic, algebra,
and geometry. The mathematics on the GRE is no more advanced
than the mathematics taught in high school. The topics are
explained in detail, and several examples of each concept are
provided. After a few concepts have been explained, a set of
practice problems with solutions is provided.
In each of the four mathematics review units, there is at least one
multiple-choice test covering the concepts of the unit. The answers
and solutions to the questions for each unit are provided in a
separate section following the test. Questions in the GRE formats
follow each test.
The review materials are structured so that you may select the
topics you want to review. The unit tests may also be used to
determine what topics you need to review.
There are three practice sections modeled after the computer-
based GRE mathematics sections. Each section is followed by the
answers and the solutions for the questions in that section. The
recommended time limit for the sections is the same as that on the
computer-based GRE, 35 minutes. The concepts covered in the
practice sections are similar to those in the actual test, and the
relative proportions of questions on different concepts are also
similar to those in the test itself.
Information on the most recent changes to the GRE can be found
on the www.ets.org website.
Use this book to review your mathematics knowledge, to check
your understanding of mathematics concepts, and to practice
demonstrating your math skills in a limited time frame. This will help
you prepare effectively for your actual GRE.

PART I
INTRODUCTION
— Tulettehan tekin?
— Lupaan kyllä.
*****
Maryse yritti panna vastaan, mutta nuo epäselvät sanat, jotka hän
mielenhämmingissään sopersi esiin, hukkuivat rouva Letourneurin
ylenpalttiseen kiitollisuuden tulkintaan.
Oli selkeä, kylmä ilma. Edellisenä iltana satanut lumi oli vielä
sulamattomana katoilla, akkunoiden kehyksissä, puiden oksilla, — ja
nuo valkoiset pinnat levittivät ympärillensä kalpeata valoa… Maryse
pysähtyi, jääden ihastuneena katsomaan taivaalle, missä ensi tähdet
tuikkivat, valkoisina nekin kirkkaassa hohteessaan.
— Kunnia olkoon Jumalalle korkeudessa! mumisi hän, ajatellen
enkeleiden ylistyslaulua.
— Erinomaisen kaunis.
— Mitä sitten?
