ust Know Math Grade 6 builds on the skills and concepts that
M you learned in your elementary school math classes. Examples
of clear-cut problems with complete solutions are provided in
all the basic area of mathematics you’ll need for success in this
school year.
In addition to providing a thorough review of all the fundamentals
of arithmetic that you studied through grade 5, you’ll be introduced
to many new skills and concepts about topics such as integers, ratio
and proportion, percents, geometry, statistics, and algebra.
Mathematics, in general, and this book in particular are not meant
for you to read only. This book contains plenty of example problems
with complete explanations of their solutions that will guide you
through the steps involved. Always try to do the problems on your
own before you read the explanations. This process will give you a
reasonable benchmark of how much you already understand, and it
will clarify what you are having problems understanding.
After trying an example problem, check the solution. Even if you
got the correct answer, look to see that you solved the problem in
the best and most efficient way. If you have stumbled getting the
right answer, remember that’s why you bought this book. Read
through the explanation and then close the book and try to solve the
problem again.
At the end of each chapter, you’ll find plenty of new problems in
the Exercises section. These problems will make sure you
consolidate and apply your understanding. Once you work through a
set of problems, check the Answer Key at the back of the book.

Each chapter of the book begins with statements about what you
must know when you have completed the chapter. After working
through a chapter, if you don’t feel that you have a good grasp of
the concepts described at the beginning, make a point of going back
through the chapter until you do. The more you are willing to do
this, the more skilled and confident you’ll become!

The Number System
MUST KNOW
The base-10 number system uses ten digits: 0, 1,
2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9.
Notice the headings for each place to the right of the decimal point.
Each has a unique name—tenths, hundredths, and thousandths—that
ends with the suffix -th. This naming pattern continues in both
directions. Let’s look at an example.
EXAMPLE
What is the value of 8 in the number 2,857.194?
Identify the place name that corresponds with the digit 8. The
digit 8 appears in the hundreds place.
8 in 2,857.194 is in the hundreds place and represents 800.
Now, let’s try finding the value of a digit after the decimal point.
EXAMPLE
What is the value of 3 in the number 58,209.693?
Identify the place name that corresponds with the digit 3. The
digit 3 appears in the thousandths place.
