Practical Experiment title:

Coordinate measurement for construction

In the developing Country like UAE, competition inspires the engineers of the future to turn
their vision of sustainable mobility into reality. Hence Civil engineers make use of the
principles of civil engineering to design the many structures we see around us. They are
Scenario: responsible for planning and overseeing different construction efforts and applying civil
engineering principles to ensure that constructed structures are safe and sturdy.

“Assuming that you have been appointed as a junior Quality control inspector in Al-Nazeer
consructions.co., to check your field knowledge senior engineers have given the technical
objectives to be done. you have been assigned to perform the surveying inspection on land.”

PRACTICAL EXPERIMENT

AIM: To calculate the least count of the level tool

To find the horizontal distance

MATERIALS REQUIRED:

● 3 x Pegs

Tools and Apparatus Used:

Dumpy Level Leveling staff

Sequence Operations:
1. Wear PPEs
2. Place the pegs
3. Set up the dumpy level
4. Hold the leveling staff next to the pegs
5. Take the reading through the dumpy level

Fundamental principle of Surveying and Dumpy apparatus:
A dumpy level is a piece of optical surveying and leveling equipment. It is made up of a
telescopic tube held together by two collars and adjustable screws. The vertical spindle controls
the entire instrument. The dumpy level creates a visual link between two or more sites by
combining an integrated telescope and a bubble level. Steps may be done to achieve the
desired level of precision. The dumpy level is essential in building site surveys. The dumpy
level's precision and portability have made it a popular option among surveyors.

Least count of the leveling tool

A leveling staff is an instrument that is used to determine the height difference between two
locations. The levelling staff is also known as the staff rod, Levelling rod, and self-reading staff
since the instrument operator may gather staff readings directly from the levelling instrument.
By 5 mm thick alternate black and white gaps, each decimeter length is divided into 20 parts. As
a result, the lowest possible count or division is 5 mm.

Procedure:
Step-1 Wear PPEs

Before starting the experiment, we must wear the proper

protective equipment. For this experiment we will be utilizing

the Protective helmet.

Step-2 Place the Pegs

Now we can place the pegs. We will place the pegs

in 3 different locations to get reading in those 3 locations.

We will also place one peg to place the dumpy level.

Step-3 Set up the dumpy level

Now we can set up the dumpy level. Check the 2 spirit

level to check if the dumpy level is straight. If the

bubble in not in the center of the circle in the spirit level,

it can be adjusted using the 3 foot screws on the dumpy

level.

Step-4 Hold the leveling staff

To take the reading, we must place the leveling staff

near the pegs. Take someone’s help to hold the leveling

staff while you take the readings on the dumpy level.

Step-5 Take the reading through the dumpy level

Now take the reading though the dumpy level.

Focus the lens and aim it towards the leveling staff.

The crosshair will have a midpoint and a upper and lower

lines. For this experiment, we will take the readings of

the upper and lower lines.

Table 01: To evaluate the horizontal distance between three different points

Total
Sno. Upper stadia Lower stadia
Upper-Lower x 100

1 1.02 0.84 1.02-0.84x100= 18

2 1.17 1.07 1.17-1.07x100= 10

3 1.4 1.2 1.4-1.2x100= 20

Precautions:
1. Wear PPEs

2. When taking the readings through the dumpy level, do not put pressure on the focusing
lens.
3. When moving the head of the dumpy level, make sure to adjust the foot screws.

Result:
1. The least count of the instrument is 0.05
2. The horizontal distance between the 3 stations is 18cm, 10cm, 20cm.
