4 Highest common factors

WHAT IS THE NUMBER? SOLUTIONS

TASK 1 Shared factors

1 I could have been thinking of any three of the following numbers:

Number Factors
30 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 10, 15, 30
60 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 10, 12, 15, 20, 30, 60
90 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 9, 10, 15, 18, 30, 45, 90
120 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12, 15, 20, 24, 30, 40, 60, 120
150 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 10, 15, 25, 30, 50, 75, 150

Each of these numbers is a multiple of 30.

60 is 2 × 30, so it has factors that are double the factors of 30 eg 3 × 2 = 4.
90 is 3 × 30, so it has factors that are 3 times the factors of 30 eg 3 × 15 = 45.
150 is 5 × 30, so it has factors that are 5 times the factors of 30 eg 5 × 5 = 25.
With your teacher and friends, discuss the things that you found.

2 The mystery number must also have the factors 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6 because these are also
factors of 12.

TASK 2 Who am I?

1 I am 42 or 84.

2 I am 71, 73 or 79. (These numbers are called prime.)

3 I am 49 or 51. (These numbers are odd composite numbers.)

4 I am 1, 4, 9 or 16. (These are square numbers: 1 × 1, 2 × 2, 3 × 3 and 4 × 4.)
