Test 1
Question Correct Answer
1. E
2. D
3. B
4. C
5. E
6. D
7. E
8. A
9. C
10. B

1) Explanation:
From (1) we know the ratio of male to female sheep, but nothing about the color distribution. So the
answer cannot be A or D. From (2) we know that forty percent of the animals are black but nothing about
whether they are male of female. So the answer cannot be B. Even putting the information together does
not help because there is no way to tell what fraction of the female sheep are black. And so C cannot be
correct, and the answer is E.

2) Explanation:
From (1) we can tell that a side of E is longer than a side of F, since 3 x side E = 4 x side F. Hence (1) is
sufficient to answer the question and the answer must be either A or D. From (2) we could work out the
ratio of the lengths of the sides (there is no need to do this, but since we are dealing with regular plane
figures the geometry is quite simple), and although we cannot get the actual lengths, we can see from the
ratio whether one is bigger than the other. So the answer is D.

3) Explanation:
Statement (1) tells us nothing about b and so the answer cannot be A or D. To find what percent a is of b
we need to solve the expression (a/b) x 100. Statement (2) allows us to do just that: (a/b) = 1/20. No need
to go any further; the answer is B.

4) Explanation:
To find the number of revolutions we need to know the rate of turning and the time duration. Statement (1)
gives us only the time, and so the answer cannot be A or D. Statement (2) tells us the rate at which a
point on the circumference is moving, which, since we know the dimensions of the wheel, is sufficient to
determine the number of rotations per minute. But since we do not know the time, B cannot be correct.
But putting (1) and (2) together we have all we need, so the answer is C.
5) Explanation:
The mean of three numbers will equal the middle number for any set of evenly spaced numbers (1,2,3 or
2,4,6, or -1, -4, -7 for example) and so we cannot assume that x, y and z are consecutive. Hence the
answer cannot be A or D. If x, y and z were 2, 4, and 6, for example, the equation in (2) would be valid, so
once again the numbers do not have to be consecutive, and the answer cannot be B. From the numbers
we have just substituted, we should be able to see that putting (1) and (2) together will still not give a
situation in which the numbers are always consecutive or always not consecutive, and so the best answer
is E.

6) Explanation:
The statement that x is greater than zero means that x is positive. If we multiply a positive number by a
negative number the product is negative: this is what we get from (1), which thus tells us that x is positive.
The answer must be A or D. The cube of a positive number is positive; the cube of a negative number is
negative, and so (2) tells us that x is positive. And so the answer is D.

7) Explanation:
It is obvious that neither (1) or (2) alone can tell you how far apart B and C are, and so the answer must
be C or E. To see whether putting both pieces of information together will be adequate, visualize two
rods: BD of length 10 units, and AC of length 12 units. Mentally place the rods alongside each other so
that C lies between B and D. Now you can mentally slide the rods past each other to see that C can lie
anywhere between B and D, and so we cannot fix one value for the length BC, and the answer is E.

8) Explanation:
The expression x² - y² has factors (x + y)(x - y), and so we can simplify (cancel down) the expression in
(1) to get x + y = 7. The answer must be A or D. Now consider (2) alone: there are two possible values for
x + y. (Either 7 or -7). Since there is not one discrete value for (2), the answer must be A.

9) Explanation:
From (1) we know the ratio of black socks to white, but that ratio will change when one sock is taken out.
To get the new ratio, and hence the probability that the next sock will also be white, we need to know the
number of socks of each type. The answer cannot be A or D. Obviously (2) on its own does not get the
ratio and so B cannot be correct. But putting the information in both statements together we can solve the
problem (24 white socks with a ratio of black to total of 1:3 means that there are 12 black and 24 white
socks). The answer is C.

10) Explanation:
Since we need rate of dripping, (1) is not enough and the answer cannot be A or D. Ignoring (1) and
looking at (2) we can easily solve the problem because one quarter of the bucket got filled in 2 hours and
the filling will get over at 10pm. The answer is B.
