LIMITED, 3 Samuel Olabode Street, Olowora, Lagos Nigeria.

A proper documentation on each of the projects and activities I was involved in as well as a

graphical representation where necessary.

A detailed and concise note on the knowledge garnered, both theoretical and most especially

practical which has helped developed and broaden my use of digital signage, setting up of

digital billboard signage. Also, troubleshooting and solving IT related issues I learnt how

to do were discussed in this report.

The report also discusses the relevance of the student industrial training scheme to students

and also recommendations in order to improve the schemes competence and capability to

impart students immensely with professional idea and skill acquired at their various firms of

attachment.
CHAPTER ONE

1.0 INTRODUCTION

The student industrial work experience scheme (SIWES) is training programme designed by

the Federal government of Nigeria in the year 1973 as part of its effort towards providing

adequate practical skills for students in the institution of higher learning, it’s a scheme

designed to expose student in tertiary institution to the work and conditions and ethics in the

industries in order to improve practical knowledge in their respective fields required to

surmount the challenges in their various disciplines before obtaining the degree in view

(Bachelor of Science) award.

It serves as an effort to bridge the gap existing between the theoretical knowledge obtained in

school with the actual industrial experience. It’s aimed at exposing students to machines that

are not available in schools, professional work methods and ways of safeguarding the work

area and workers in industries and other organizations. It is funded by the federal government

which is jointly coordinated by the Industrial Training Fund (ITF) and the National

University council (NUC). During my industrial training period which was undertaken

between May2011 to September2011, most of the SIWES objectives were achieved.

1.1 HISTORY OF SIWES

At the early stages of the development of education in Nigeria, there was a problem of the

gap between theory and practical skills of students. Therefore, there was a need to give

students to get real work experience. The program was created to give student experience in

addition to theoretical learning. The industrial training policy was introduced by Federal

Government of Nigeria in 1973. As at that time it was called Student Industrial Training

(SIT). This Project was necessary to improve practical skills of students. SIWES has become

a necessary pre-condition of graduation. This program is working with such disciplines as

Engineering, medical sciences, Natural Science, Technology, Agriculture.

1.2 AIMS AND OBJECTIVE OF SIWES

The aims and the objectives of the student industrial work experience scheme are as follow.

To provide student with an opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge in real work

situation, thereby bridging the gap existing between university work and actual practice.

To serve as opportunity for self – actualization for student thus making positive and

commendable contribution within scope of his/her knowledge.

To expose students to work methods, techniques and machines that may not be available

in the schools.

To prepare students for the work situation there are likely to face after school.

To provide an avenue for students in the Nigerian universities to acquire industrial skills

and experience in their course of study.

1.3 RELEVANCE AND JUSTIFICATION

One of the significant features of advanced industrial societies is the degree to which they

have achieved progress in the field of science and technology. This had enabled the citizens

to enjoy good standard of living which exceeds that of the developing countries. Thus formal

education comprising of field or industrial work is vital for the production of graduate with

increasingly specialized skills. Therefore students industrial work experience scheme

(SIWES) is relevant for;

Improve of science and technological education.

Skilled manpower development.

Creation of community with increased standard of living.

Development of critical and scientific approach to problems and their possible solutions

New innovation in the field of science and technology

As a matter of fact, the student industrial work experience scheme (SIWES) is a promotion

for the growth of science and technology, Engineering, Agriculture, Medical, Management

and other professional programme in the Nigerian tertiary institution OF SIWES

3.0 WORKDONE AND EXPERIENCES GAINED:

During my Six months Student Industrial Working Experience scheme (SIWES) at Xanda

Technologies Limited. I must confess I gained a lot of experiences and I was exposed to so

many things in the Digital signage world alongside the IT (Information Technology) world

and the work done during these months have been able to increase my knowledge and helped

on how I can handle any projects or jobs given to me outside the four walls of the school.

However, I believe that the experiences I have gained will really help me after school on a

long run. I can single-handedly supervise any project on digital signage, I can execute and

manage any company’s project without supervision, and also provide support to users in any

company as an Information technology support specialist. I am now fully aware of how

essential TECHNOLOGY is in the digital signage world, setting up the digital signage and

office upkeep was part of me throughout my SIWES at Xanda Technologies Limited and it

is an experience that will remain in me forever.

I had monthly presentation during my SIWES and that has helped build my confidence to de-

liver presentations well and capable of producing a well suitable slide for the presentation.
3.1 MANAGEMENT OF TECHNOLOGY

3.1.1 XANDADECK PLAYER

3.1.1.1 INTRODUCTION TO XANDADECK PLAYER

I was introduced to what the Xanda deck player is, and how I can solve client’s issues when

there are problems, what benefit the xandadeck adds to users, what my work is as an

Information technology support specialist concerning the xandadeck player.

Xandadeck is a next-generation digital signage service, born and raised on the Cloud. This

cloud-based digital signage platform helps you design, create and schedule easily for your

screens from anywhere in the world, using your computer or smartphone, effortlessly. It

basically helps to turn your screen into a communication platform of sorts. It can turn your

screen into a menu board.

Xandadeck is a digital signage player. Digital signage players are physical or palpable

devices that display contents on your screens but they are not software themselves, they only

work in hand with digital signage software screens and generally connect to the digital

signage content management system. The Xandadeck player is based on raspberry pi is a

digital signage, by which it pushes messages from one location in any part of the world

because it can split your TV screen and display multiple message at the same time.
FIG.2: An image of a xandadeck player.

Contents can only be pushed out via the digital signage player only when we must have been

able to join the digital signage player together with the digital signage software, then we can

manage and also troubleshoot via the content management system. The both are needed for

each other because they are essentially needed for ensuring the digital signage network runs

seamlessly.
3.1.1.2 HOW THE XANDADECK PLAYER WORKS

The Xandadeck player which is a digital signage player, far from digital signage content

management systems, are not a platform you log into. They are not an operation centre or

dashboard you need to check daily. Rather, a digital signage player is a system installed on a

physical device that plays on a screen. Once the clients set up their player, they can

essentially just let it do its job. The real work is done by the team on the content management

system who are the Information technology support specialist, which I happened to be a part

of them in the company, during my training.

As mentioned, the content management system is the digital signage platform that allows you

to control what is showing up on your screen while also troubleshooting any issue that arise,

which is what I deal with as Information technology support specialist in the company.

FIG.2: An image showing the xandadeck player and its part

3.1.1.3 JOB UNDERTAKEN BY ME REGARDING THE XANDADECK PLAYER

I worked in the IT department as an Information technology support specialist where I

rendered services and gave technical support to the company’s clients and I was assigned to

give daily report of every players from every organisation, because I was given the access to

the content management system.

FIG.3: An image showing daily reports of players online and offline.

The daily reports of online and offline players made it easier for me as an Information

technology support to know which organisation needs my support as an Information

technology specialist, I always go to each organisations that are having offline players to give

technical support and ensure their players come back online.

FIG.4: An image showing of myself presenting the reports of online and offline players.
3.1.1.4 PROBLEM SOLVING FOR CLIENTS AS AN INFORMATION

TECHNOLOGY SPECIALIST

Different issues can always come up since the player is a technical device which also requires

network, the network can be in form of either Internet cable or local area network depending

on the organisation.

ISSUES THAT MAY OCCUR TO THE PLAYER

 UNAVAILABLE INTERNET CONNECTIVITY FOR A WI-FI

ENVIRONMENT:

In a wi-fi environment and there was a change of wi-fi password or a change in the wi-fi

name itself, automatically, the xandadeck player will disconnect from the cloud based

solution because it won’t be seeing the new wi-fi credentials that has just been changed

to, that makes the player go offline since it has been disconnected from the cloud and

there is no internet. I learnt how to troubleshoot when problems like this occurs as an

information technology support specialist. In solving this problem, I remove the memory

card on the player and put it in a memory card reader, after that, I slot it in my personal

computer to check for the network credentials and then edit it to the new network

credentials, if it still doesn’t work, that is where I have to flash the memory card, flashing

the memory card wipes away the old wi-fi credentials, after flashing it then I install back

the operating system, because in the process of flashing the memory card to wipe away

old credentials, it also wipes away the operating system and make the memory card an

ordinary memory card. So, it is required to flash the memory card and then install the
operating system, after that, input the new credentials. After doing all of these,

successfully, the player comes back online because it is now using same wi-fi credentials

the organisation changed to.

FIG.5: An image of myself flashing a memory card at GT bank headquarters.

FIG.5: An image of myself installing back the operating system.

 UNAVAILABLE INTERNET CONNECTIVITY FOR A LAN (LOCAL AREA

NETWORK) ENVIRONMENT:

In a LAN (local area network) environment, internet cable is being used instead unlike

the wi-fi environment where we use wi-fi to get internet to the player. So when there is

no internet connectivity here, I check the LAN ( local area network) cable to see if it is

plugged to the player and check if the player is not blinking, if it is not blinking , it is

right to check if LAN (local area network)cable is properly plugged and check the switch

on the wall to see where the LAN(local area network) cable is coming from , if it is
properly plugged and everything seem fine but the player is still not online and

displaying contents, then the network cable will be removed and plugged to my personal

computer to see if there is internet on the LAN(local area network) cable, if there is

internet on the cable and it is still not blinking, the player will be re-plugged back. In a

case where the there is no internet on the cable, then I go the server room to check the

switch. All these, are ways I troubleshoot as an Information Technology support

specialist dealing with the xanddadeck player. Sometimes, the problem maybe from the

cable, probably the cable is bad or ports on the switch is bad. It can also be that the

switch where the cable is coming from is bad, lastly, the problem may also be from the

internet port of the player itself, maybe it’s bad, those can be the issues in a LAN (local

area network) environment.

All these are ways of solving the issues surrounding the xandadeck player but the issues

can only be known by troubleshooting, which is the work of an information technology

support specialist.

Sometimes, after doing all of these steps rightly and the problem has still not been

solved, in a LAN (local area network) environment, the last step of trouble shooting as

Information Technology Support Specialist will be to delete the player from the portal

itself, then flash it and provide the network credentials, after that, it will come up with a

registration code, then the player will be re-registered. That’s how it works, the client’s

issue has been successfully solved after doing all these as an Information Technology

Support Specialist.
FIG.6: An image of myself checking if the player is properly connected and blinking.
FIG.7: An image of me connecting the player to my personal computer as part of

troubleshooting.
FIG.8: An image of connecting the player to the Television screen for the company’s client.
FIG.9: An image showing registration code of a player after I re-registered it.
3.1.1.4 PROBLEM WHO ARE THE CLIENTS?

The clients are different organisations like banks, pharmacies, restaurants, and hospitals

who are subscribed to Xandadeck product from the company.

BENEFIT OF THE XANDADECK PLAYER

 Push messages from one one location in any part of the world to other locations

across the world.

 Split your screen and display multiple messages at the same time.

 Group the branches and customize messages. For instance, what you send to branches

in the North may be different from those in the South.

 Schedule your broadcast.

 Conduct live broadcast to all the branches from one location.

 Remotely manage the content of your screen from your desktop, laptop or tablet.
3.1.2 INTRODUCTION TO LED IPOSTER

I was introduced to the LED IPOSTER and I learnt how it works and how I can render

technical support to customers as an Information technology specialist and what benefit it

adds to users.

The LED iPoster is the digital form of the traditional rollup banner, exactly same length and

breadth but a lot more engaging that one can even imagine.

It is the first commercial display that can achieve a seamless splice. The Iposters can be

combined together to form a large screen, which is what I did on behalf of the company’s IT

department, I single-handedly handled these product and I took charge of this part in the

company due to how I was able to understand it fast and my own personal study about it

including few knowledge from my University.

The LED Iposter are connected with the HDMI but it can only work after you must have

configured it and set it up like your computer for it to respond to every of your commands,

which can be done with the knowledge of an IT personnel, hence, I was given the job to

handle and represent the company’s IT department.

3.1.2.1 HOW TO SET UP THE LED IPOSTER AND CONFIGURE IT

The LED Iposter screen has a software which you can push your contents through to the

screen for the display, it is mostly done using mobile devices and as an IT personnel, I learnt

how to not use the mobile device network with the software, the LED iposter has its own wifi

programmed for it which I connect to it to access the software.

FIG.4: An image showing the LED Iposter without being configured.

CONFIGURING THE LED IPOSTER

As an IT personnel, working with the LED Iposter screens made me get more familiar with

using the HDMI cable. The screen has different ports in which they all contribute to the

configuration of the screen. As an IT personnel, it was my job to ensure all ports of the screen

are all plugged with their accurate components to make the screen work. The components are

also what makes up the iposter.

FIG.5: An image showing the LED Iposter with its different ports.

The LED iposter will come on after plugging the components to their correct ports.

FIG.6: An image of myself setting up an LED Iposter

FIG.7: An image of myself

setting up the LED Iposter for

the company’s client (emzor).

Doing this successfully will

only make the iposter screens

come on but can’t still be

controlled the way we control our computer to send and receive data. I was able to set that up

and make it easy to control like a computer can be controlled for it to respond to the

command given to it by the user. I did that by using the device with me, one can use any

device as long as it has been configured to the iposter settings. There are some rules and

regulations that governs them in which I learnt them as an Information Technology personnel

and was able to apply them and gave support to clients of the organisation.

3.1.2.2 HOW TO CONTROL THE LED IPOSTER SCREEN:

After the LED iposter has been configured and it’s already on, we configure it so we can

control it by doing something called “ACTIVATING SCREEN”. After the screen is on, I

learnt how to set it to be controlled on the mobile device using the LED iposter software

( vplex handy).

ACTIVATING SCREEN:

Connect mobile device to screen wifi which helps the screen to be able to acknowledge the

mobile device and confirm that the mobile device has been set to the screen, then Set video

control to HDMI to set the video source to Internal and any message from the mobile device

can be pushed to the screen.

Activating the screen or pushing contents to the screen can only be done through the

customised software. To activate the screen as a controllable machine, I made sure I set the

screen to a master screen.

What’s a master screen? A master screen is the screen that displays the content you pushed

from your mobile phone and in the case where we have two screens, what is displayed on the

master screen, is what will also display on the other screen as long as the two screens have

been bound together.

During my training, I was able to learn how to bind two or more screens together and also

how to unbind them so they can operate independently.

HOW TO CREATE A CASCADE MASTER SCREEN

 Creating a master screen, I learnt to make sure the HDMI cord is connected to right

port on the screen which is the HDMI OUT port. That indicates that the screen giving

out data and it is getting data from the direct source which is the mobile phone.

 On the LED iposter software, the video SOURCE is also set to be INTERNAL,

which is done on the video control from the software. Sometimes, the screen might

already be set to HDMI instead of INTERNAL. As an Information technology

personnel, it was part of my job to always check because it is also a step of

troubleshooting.

 Every screen has its own position on the software, for the master screen, I set the X

position to 0, turning the X position is a part of the steps in turning the screen into a

master screen, which is to give the screen signal to confirm that the screen won’t be

receiving any content from any other screen.

After doing all of these carefully, as an Information technology personnel, I was able to turn a

screen into a master screen for every event the company had during my five months of

training.

There are some steps to creating a receiving screen in which I also learnt during my five

months training. What is a receiving screen? A receiving screen is the screen that displays

content from the master screen, the receiving screen is dependent on the master screen, it
can’t display a content on its own and it does not get contents from the direct source (mobile

device) unlike the master screen.

HOW TO CREATE A CASCADE RECEIVING SCREEN

The receiving screen receives data from the master screen or display same content as the

master screen, so I ensure to connect the HDMI cord to the right port on the screen which is

the HDMI IN port. That indicates that the screen will be getting data from the mater screen.

Unlike the mater screen, the receiving X position is always set depending on how many

screens I am to bind together. I learnt to bind as many as 4 screens together. In which 3 out of

the 4 screens will be receiving content from the remaining one called master screen.

Every receiving screen has its own X position, the master screen is always the screen1, the

one after the screen which is a master screen is called screen2, the screen 2 X position will be

set to be 224, screen3 X position is set to be 448 while the screen 4 X position is set to be

672.

I learnt to always set all receiving screens to HDMI instead of INTERNAL which is used for

the screen 1, the master screen.

After doing all of these correctly, I can control the screen from the mobile app, and send data

to the master screen which will pass same data to every receiving screen connected to it.
FIG.8: An image of 2 screens bound together by me for the organisation’s client (emzor).

From the above image two screens are displaying same content as a result of successfully

binding them together to give same content and make the screen look like one large screen.

UNBINDING THE LED IPOSTER

I furthered my knowledge about the LED iposter by learning how to unbind screens that had

already been bound together.

Unbinding the screen was really important in my due to different clients and their requests, I

also understood that as Information technology personnel, its my duty to understand what the

clients wants and how to respond to their reuest.

HOW TO UNBIND THE LED IPOSTER

Unbinding the screens is done through the same software used in binding the screen on the

mobile device. Below are the few steps I learnt to unbind screens;

 Connect to wifi network provided by the receiving screen to be unbind. The receiving

screen is what is to be disconnected.

 Unplug the HDMI cable from the receiving screen port.

 Go back to the software on the mobile device

 Change the video source HDMI to internal on the software

 Change the X position to 0 on the software.

Unbinding is basically turning the receiving screen to a master screen, I learnt to

change every settings to same settings as any master screen to make it easier to learn.

All these are done through the dedicated software designed for the screen which was

built by the organisation.

FIG.9: An image of myself unbinding two screens.

From the picture above, I was able to unbind two screens that were bound together, so now

each screen can now operate independently and be used separately. Hence, they are

displaying different contents.

3. 1 APPLICATIONS/SOFTWARES I CAN NOW OPERATE ON

3. 1 .1 BALENAETCHER

Balenaetcher is a software or tool used to flash OS Images onto SD cards and USB drives

which is important in my field because during the Setup, installation and techn

ical support to client for one of the company’s products Xandadeck. I reconfigured the Xan-

dadeck player by using BalenaEtcher to reinstall the Raspberry pi OS, this procedure can also

be called flashing of the player and this was what I used the software for during my Industrial

training at Xanda Technologies Limited. It is also a free and open-source utility used for writ-

ing image files such as .iso and .img files, as well as zipped folders onto storage media to

create live SD cards and USB flash drive.

3. 1 .2 VIPLEX HANDY

Viplex handy is a software application which runs on mobile devices designed for the Led

Iposter digital signage screen. I used this software in configuring the Led Iposter digital sig-

nage and it serves as a media player control.

CHAPTER FOUR

4.0 SUMMARY

4.2 CONCLUSIONS

The industrial training has exposed me to another world of Information technology, I was

able to get familiar and understand the digital signage, how it works, setting up the LED

Iposter.

Also, it made me understand the basics of computer, got familiar with computer and it’s

component, and even how to solve some problems as an Information technology support

specialist, from troubleshooting to how to relate with users when there are issues because I

worked in the IT department. It has increased my interest as an Information technology

support specialist, widen my scope on the IT field and most importantly practical application

of the theoretical knowledge in school. Also, it has built up my confidence and my level of

interaction with people.

Conclusively, at the end of this industrial training, I was really convinced and shown that;

Computer Science is incomplete without the practical experience and exposure to some areas

of information technology. My initiative and intelligence had also been tested by my

industrial–based supervisors by giving me some jobs to carry out during my stay with them in

the course of my industrial training and as a result of this, I can now on my own perform

some works and basics of computer operations.

The programme has also improved my interpersonal relationship with people and other

professionals, which has brought out my capabilities under an official condition, working

with Information technology specialists, knowing their functions, roles and their

importance/advantages in any industry.

4.3 RECOMMENDATIONS

It is highly recommended that industrial training should be carried out in 200l, and 300l to

enable the students realize the inter – woven of scientific discipline and to provide an insight

to human relationship, interaction and managerial skill.

I also recommend that there should be proper supervision of students by both ITF officials

and school based supervisors to ensure that students are taking the programme serious.
