Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to
each of the questions from 39 to 43.
ToddlerWorld Nursery was delighted to employ a trainee - twenty-two-year-old Jonathan Brown - as their first male
nursery school teacher. He was also the only man who applied for the job, but, insists Margery Bowman, head
teacher of ToddlerWorld, by far the best applicant. 'Both boys and girls will benefit from the experience of having a
male role model in the nursery,' says mother of two, Marjory.
Jonathan has always been interested in childcare. His own mother is a childminder and his father is a teacher. 'I've
always helped Mum with looking after all the children,' he says. 'I'm used to changing nappies, feeding babies,
reading stories and playing with Lego.'
But Jonathan is a rare male in a female world. Only 2% of nursery teachers are men and this hasn't changed for ten
years. Roger Olsen of the National Nursery Trust said, 'Men are often viewed with anxiety and suspicion in a
children's environment. Or they are expected to do things the way women would do them. But men bring different
things into childcare and this has to be recognised.' Jonathan agrees. He is a qualified under-7s football coach, and
plans to introduce football lessons to the nursery for boys and girls.
What do Jonathan's friends think of his choice of career? Actually, most of them are pretty cool about it now,' he
says, though they do make jokes about nappies. And I've found that girls are actually quite impressed - so that's
good!'
39. Which of the following could be the best title for the passage?
A. A Man’s World?
B. Football at ToddlerWorld
C. Early Education
D. Woman’s Work?
40. Which of the following is NOT true about Jonathan Brown according to the passage?
A. brilliant
B. unusual
C. common
D. normal
A. jokes
B. nappies
C. girls
D. Jonathan's friends

When I first became a broadcaster many years ago, I didn't know, and neither did most other people, that I was
entering what was going to become the greatest growth industry of the next half century: the media. We didn't use
that rather nasty word then, of course: we had newspapers, radio and television. We've only started to talk about 'the
media' relatively recently, but nowadays everybody seems to want to be part of it.
Apart from sleeping, watching television is what people do most of, each person spending, on average, just under
four hours per day in front of the box. But the influence of television goes further and cannot be measured just by the
number of hours people have their television sets on. It involves what happens to us during that time. Some people
certainly treat it as background while they carry on having a meal, reading the paper or even listening to music. But
most of the time, we turn it on to watch, and we give it our full attention.
Television is now a central part of what makes us who we are. There is, however, a particular aspect of television
which makes it unlike almost all other influences on our lives. It is not yet truly interactive. It speaks to us but we do
not speak back, except on a few phone-in programmes. When I was a child, a whole host of things and people
influenced me but the one thing they all had in common was the fact that you got a reaction from them. That was
how you learnt what real life was all about and how you fitted into it.
The television networks can present us with a picture of the world as it really is complicated and interesting and full
of variety and they can make us think about it and about ourselves as a result. But equally, they can appeal to the
worst sides of our nature or turn everything into light entertainment. If they do that, then that's how we will start to
respond to the world, too. My concern is that the trend is clearly in the wrong direction.
A. established
B. assessed
C. accessed
D. compared
A. the paper
B. background
C. meal
D. television
A. The fact that television is partly interactive sets it apart from other digital media.
B. People do not often watch television while doing activities that require attention.
C. On average, each individual spends at least four hours per day glued to the TV screen.
D. We do not learn much about what real life actually is by just watching television.
A. advanced
B. complex
C. popular
D. unexpected
B. The virtual world presented by television is less appealing than the real world.
C. Television can shape our perceptions of the world in a less thoughtful manner.
D. The television networks certainly enhance our ability to think deeply about the world.
