Screen & Disc
Filtration
Screen & Disc Filtration

Screen and disc filters are used to remove particulate impurities from water.
Particles in water can cause problems of erosion in pumps and pipe work and can
block fine jets such as spray nozzles. Water flows through a screen or between
discs which retain particles larger than the defined filtration grade. Screen and disc
filters do a similar job to cartridge filters but the screens/discs are cleaned rather
than replaced, so operating costs are minimal.

Typical applications include:

σ Protection of domestic water fittings
σ Protection of membrane processes from fouling
σ Filtration of cooling water to prevent heat exchanger fouling
σ Pre-filtration of process water

Granular Media
Granular Media Pressure Filtration

Filtration
Pressure
Granular media is contained within a pressure vessel, typically GRP or coated
steel. Water enters the top of the vessel and flows downwards through the bed of
media, exiting through a collector system at the base. Contaminants are removed
by straining and/or adsorption depending on the chosen media. The filters must be
periodically backwashed.

Depending on the type of filter media used, granular media filtration has a variety of
applications including:
Filtration of water after chemical dosing to remove colloidal haze and turbidity
Pre-filtration to protect membrane processes from fouling
Filtration of cooling water to prevent heat exchanger fouling
Filtration of borehole water to remove iron and manganese
Removal of chlorine from water to protect ion exchange resins or membranes
Increasing the pH of acidic water to prevent corrosion
Feed water for drip irrigation systems

Sand is used to remove particulates and suspended solids. For high suspended solids
loads, a layer of coarse anthracite may be added above the sand. Multimedia filtration
may also be used for very fine filtration by adding a layer of fine garnet below the sand.

Sometimes two stages of filtration are used –often anthracite and sand in the first
vessel with sand and garnet in the second. This allows chemicals like polyelectrolytes
to be added between the stages to improve filtration efficiency.

Granular activated carbon is widely used to remove chlorine from water prior to ion
exchange or reverse osmosis where it could damage the resins or membranes.
Dechlorination by activated carbon also removes the taste associated with chlorine.
Activated carbon is also used to remove a wide range of organic chemicals including
chlorinated hydrocarbons, pesticides and the species that cause taste, odour and co-
lour.

Manganese dioxide is used as a catalytic filter bed to remove iron and manganese
from borehole water for a range of industrial applications.

Dolomite or limestone chips are occasionally used in filters, either alone or as a

separate layer above sand, to neutralise low pH waters. The media slowly dissolves
and has to be replaced at regular intervals.

Softening

Softening
Salts of calcium and magnesium have low solubility. In water they are collectively
called “hardness” and cause a variety of problems in industrial water use, including:

Scale in cooling towers, causing blockages

Scale in low pressure steam boilers, reducing heat transfer efficiency
Fouling in reverse osmosis systems, causing loss of performance
Scale in hot water calorifiers (heaters), reducing heat transfer efficiency
Scum in laundries, reducing efficiency of detergents
Deposits in domestic hot and cold water services, contributing to Legionella
problems
Streaky deposits in glass and bottle washing

Ion exchange softening is the most widely used softening process. Water is passed
through a bed of cation exchange resin where calcium and magnesium ions are
removed from the water in exchange for sodium ions. When the sodium ions on
the resin have been replaced by calcium or magnesium ions, the softening reaction
stops and the resin need to be regenerated. Regeneration is achieved by passing a
salt solution through the resin bed.

Reverse Osm
Osmosis
mossis

Osmosis
Reverse
Reverse osmosis (RO) is a process that uses a membrane to remove over 95% of
dissolved salts, such as calcium bicarbonate and sodium chloride, from water. It is
used either alone or in combination with processes such as ion exchange in a variety
of industrial applications where the total dissolved solids (TDS) concentration in
water has to be reduced, including:

Purified water for pharmaceutical manufacturing

Laboratory glassware washing
Semiconductor rinse water
Process water
Water for soft drinks production and brewing
Boiler feed water
Desalination of brackish or sea water to drinking water quality
Recycling and reuse

The RO membrane also acts as a very fine filter removing 99% of suspended and
colloidal solids, bacteria and organic molecules with molecular weights in excess of
about 200Da. This makes the process particularly attractive for applications where
treated water not only has to be low in TDS but also of high clarity and free from
bacteria, such as that used for soft drinks and pharmaceuticals manufacturing.

on

Ultrafiltration is a membrane separation process similar to microfiltration and

reverse osmosis. However, it differs in terms of the size of particles removed and
its operation. Ultrafiltration operates at low pressures and is capable of removing

suspended solids including fine particulates, colloids and high molecular weight
dissolved materials.

Applications include:
Surface water
Borehole water
Swimming pool water
Recycling/reuse
RO feed water
Oil/water separation in emulsion
Recovery of metal particles
Regeneration of degreasing/cleaning solutions

Deionisation
n

There are many industrial processes in which the presence of any dissolved salts
in water can cause problems. Removing all the dissolved salts from water is called
deionisation or demineralisation. Processes that need high purity water include:
High pressure boilers
Chemical manufacture
Toiletries and cosmetics production

Deionisation
Humidification systems
Battery top-up
Surface finishing

For industrial processes requiring high purity water, the most widely used purification
technology is twin bed ion exchange deionisation. The ion exchange resins are
contained in two separate pressure vessels and flow through them in series. Raw
water enters the cation exchange vessel and passes down through the resin bed
where calcium, magnesium, sodium and other cations are removed from the water
in exchange for hydrogen ions. The water then passes through the anion exchange
vessel where chloride, sulfate, bicarbonate and other anions are removed in exchange
for hydroxide ions. When the hydrogen and hydroxide ions on the resins have been
replaced by the cations and anions from the water, the deionisation reaction stops
and the resins need to be regenerated.

Continuous Ele
Electrodeionisation
ectrodeiionisatiion (CED
(CEDI)
DI)

Continuous Electrodeionisation (CEDI) is a technology combining ion exchange

resins and ion-selective membranes with direct current to remove ionised species
from water. It overcomes the limitations of ion exchange resin beds, notably the
release of ions as the beds exhaust and the associated need to change or
regenerate the resins. Reverse osmosis (and sometimes membrane degassing) is
typically used prior to CEDI to ensure that the CEDI stack is not overloaded with high
levels of salts.

Applications include:
Pharmaceutical
High pressure boiler feed

CEDI
Humidification systems
Microelectronics
Central laboratory
Ultraviolet Disinfection
Disiinfectio
on

Ultraviolet (UV) technology is an effective chemical-free technology for water

disinfection.

UV disinfection can be applied to:

Process water
Wastewater

An ultraviolet (UV) disinfection system transfers electromagnetic energy from a

mercury arc lamp to organisms’ genetic material. UV radiation, generated by an
electrical discharge through mercury vapour, penetrates the microorganisms and
destroys or slows down their ability to reproduce. The effectiveness of a UV disinfection
system depends on the characteristics of the water, the intensity of UV radiation, the
amount of time the microorganisms are exposed to the radiation, and the reactor
configuration. For any one treatment plant, disinfection success is directly related to

Disinfection
the concentration of colloidal and particulate constituents in the water.

Water treatment technologies are differentiated by their ability to treat different

types of contaminants. It is often necessary to combine different treatment technologies
in order to produce a suitable quality of water for an application.

Applications include:
Filtration, softening and RO for utility feed and process water
Filtration, softening, RO and DI for healthcare, microelectronics and laboratories
Filtration, softening, twin pass RO and CEDI for pharmaceutical
RO & CEDI for high pressure boiler feed
RO & CEDI for healthcare, microelectronics and central laboratory

The existence of similar applications and thus water requirements across different
businesses has encouraged water treatment companies to propose pre-packaged
multi-technology solutions. Typically such solutions are skid-mounted or containerised
and have smaller footprints than combined independent technologies. They also
have the advantage of being pre-piped and pre-configured prior to delivery for quick
installation and start-up. In addition, the control systems are specifically designed to

Clarification
n & Flotation
Flotatio
on

Clarification is a multi-step process that reduces turbidity and suspended matter. It

is also used to reduce iron and remove colour, taste and odour in the water by adding
oxidising agents such as chlorine. Clarification consists of three stages: coagulation,
flocculation and sedimentation.

During the coagulation stage, chemical coagulants or pH-adjustment chemicals are

used to destabilise the particles. During the flocculation stage, other chemicals are
added which encourage the previously destabilised particles to stick together and
form flocs. During sedimentation, the flocs settle by gravity and separate from the
water.

Applications include:
Primary clarification of wastewater
Treatment of biofilter backwash water
Clarification of trickling filter effluents
Storm water treatment
Tertiary polishing or phosphorus removal
Drinking water treatment, both ground and surface waters
Giardia and cryptosporidium removal
Pre-treatment of industrial process waters
Recycling/reuse

Clarification
& Flotation
Flotation DAF is a process using air dissolved in water in order to achieve solid/liquid
separation.
In order to increase the process efficiency, chemical additives are normally dosed.
Coagulation followed by flocculation inside the treated fluid is achieved.
Coagulation is meant to destabilise solid particles in stable equilibrium inside

eatmennt

Membrane Bioreactors (MBR) are used to treat industrial and municipal wastewaters to
produce high quality effluents suitable for water reuse applications – either directly
or following a reverse osmosis treatment stage. MBR combine two basic processes:
biological treatment and membrane separation in either a single tank or separate
tanks. The biological breakdown of the pollution takes place in an aerated reactor
containing suspended microorganisms (biomass or activated sludge). The key
differentiator of MBR is that the biological process is coupled with membranes
for biomass filtration instead of using conventional separation processes, such as
clarification and flotation.

Advantages over conventional systems:

Small footprint and quick start-up
Complete suspended solids removal
High load rate capability
High removal of COD and nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorous)
Low sludge production
No sludge bulking
Effluent disinfection; barrier against pathogens, such as chlorine-resistant
organisms, cryptosporidium and giardia

Applications include:
Small or medium sized industrial or municipal effluent treatment plants
Temporary solutions during refurbishment or upgrade work
Recycling for boiler feed, process water, aquifer recharge, public utility

Evaporation

Evaporation is a process of physical separation which can be applied to liquid

systems.
Evaporation technology is a natural and clean method of separation; for this reason
it has become recognised as BAT (Best Available Technology) in several European
Directives for waste treatment.

Typical applications include:

Wastewater treatment
Reduction of volumes to be disposed
ZLD
Recycling and Reuse
Exploitation of exceeding thermal energy
Production of high quality deionised water for boiler feed and cooling circuits
make-up
Treatment of cooling towers blow-down
