recommended for Intermediate level or above. A feather wing shawl from this pattern is 14 inches tall from top-
center to bottom-center, and 80 inches long from wing tip to wing tip. This pattern is written in U.S.

BEFORE YOU START YOU SHOULD KNOW….
BEFORE YOU START: You should be aware that you have options!
1) To complete the shawl for an adult you will need at least one of each panel (see
#4 for information about making one for a child). Additionally, you can make the
shawl double-sided by making two of Panels 2 and 3 (or two of Panels 1, 2, and 3)
and sewing all 5 (or 6) panels together. This will require more yarn and create a
much heavier piece.
2) You can make individual wings (a Left Wing and a Right Wing). To do this,
you will follow the applicable instructions for each panel and fasten off where
indicated. Work into BLO stitches for one wing, then working into FLO stitches
instead of BLO stitches for the other wing. Once all panels are complete for each
individual wing, you will layer the panels and sew them together as indicated in
the assembly instructions (except you will sew two separate wings and not one
long shawl). BE FOREWARNED, working into FLO stitches VS. working into
BLO stitches will NOT result in exactly the same texture. If you are doing this, it
would be best to follow the next suggestion (#3), adding an accent color by
following the edge of each feather with SC and Slip Stitches. Individual wings
will be soft/floppy; if you would like slightly more structured wings, make them
double sided (see #1 above), or use a thicker yarn or smaller hook.
3) No matter what kind of wings (whole or two separate pieces) you make, you
also have the option to use an accent color and SC around the entire edge of every
feather on every panel. This will accent each feather and it will stabilize the shawl
even further. This option is time intensive and yarn consuming, and it is not
necessary for the finished product. Instructions for how to do this are in the
Assembly Section.
4) The wings, as written, are over 6 feet wide with worsted weight yarn and an H
5mm hook. The wings could be made smaller by using a lighter weight yarn, a
smaller hook, or both (note that using a smaller hook with worsted weight yarn
will result in a shawl with less drape and more structure). Alternatively, you could
also choose to just make Panel 2 and Panel 3 if you wanted much smaller wings
without using very light weight yarn (for example, child sized wings).
5) You can use whatever colors you want for the wings – You can use a different
color for each panel or all the same color. It is up to you! The wings are
constructed one feather at a time, so using a gradient yarn would work very well,
too. Choose a yarn with a bit of stretch so the shawl will drape and not be stiff.

BEFORE YOU ASSEMBLE: You should be aware that you have options!
Read the entire Assembly Section before continuing so you know your
options.
1) At a minimum, you will need one of each panel. If you want to, you can also
make an additional Panel 2 and Panel 3, or an additional Panel 1, 2, and 3 and then
sew all 5 or 6 panels together so that the wings will be double-sided. This will use
a lot more yarn and create a much heavier piece.
2) If you made individual wings (a Left Wing and a Right Wing), they will be
sewn together in the same way as the directions below, you will simply sew two
separate wings instead of one long shawl.
3) No matter what kind of wings (whole or two separate pieces) you made, you
can also decide to use an accent color and SC around the entire edge of every
feather on every panel. This will accent each feather and the lines between each
feather, and it will stabilize the shawl even further – though it is time and yarn
consuming and unnecessary for the finished product. If you decide to do this, you
may wish to go up one hook size and keep your tension relatively loose to keep the
edges from curling.
**Note: Outlining each individual panel before assembly (detailed below) will
create a much heavier piece. If you wish to have feather outlines but would
like less weight to the shawl, you may try assembling the shawl first and then
outlining only the top edge of the entire shawl and those parts of the feathers
that show on top of the shawl. This is not detailed in this section, but you can
loosely follow the edging directions below to achieve this.

ACCENT To outline the wings with an Accent color:
EDGING Attach the yarn to the OC of any panel.

feathers until you are two stitches away from where the two feathers split.

Skip the final Stitch in the “V” created where this feather joins the next (you will
work into this when you outline the next feather). SC along the leftover BLO (or

of the shawl).
Continue in this way until you have outlined all the feathers in the panel.
**Pro-Tip: If the ends of your feathers are starting to curl, add increases
where the feathers curve along the bottom edge.

On these short feather lines, you will not continue to SC up to the top of the shawl.
Instead, after you SC in the last available BLO (or FLO) loop, you will connect

ASSEMBLY To attach the panels: Lay out the wings, layered on top of each other (with panel 1

2. Using yarn tails (or long pieces of matching yarn) and a darning needle, sew the
pieces together.
Use small, neat stitches to attach the panels together. If you are using solid color
panels or the same yarn throughout, then you can sew through all three panels at
the same time. Since your yarn will blend in easily, it should not matter if your
stitches show through the back of the wings.
If you are using different color panels, then you should use tiny stitches to attach
each panel. Sew around all edges, capturing only the visible side of the work. Do
NOT insert the needle through to the back of the work while attaching if you do
not want stitches showing through on the back of the wings. You will want to use
your needle like this:
(Note: These photos are from another pattern and do not show the feather shawl.
However, the technique is the same.)
Choose ONE of the following options for sewing your shawl:

A. Stitch around the ENTIRE edge of panel 2 and panel 3 to attach. You may also
want to tack the feathers in place at points throughout the rest of central area of
each panel so that it does not come loose/stretch out. Weave in ends.
B. Stitch along the top edge of all three panels to attach them to each other, but
then do not stitch around the edges of the feathers and leave them loose. This will
create a looser moving shawl piece.

TEXT ONLY: BEFORE YOU START YOU SHOULD KNOW….
BEFORE YOU START: You should be aware that you have options!
1) To complete the shawl for an adult you will need at least one of each panel (see
#4 for information about making one for a child). Additionally, you can make the
shawl double-sided by making two of Panels 2 and 3 (or two of Panels 1, 2, and 3)
and sewing all 5 (or 6) panels together. This will require more yarn and create a
much heavier piece.
2) You can make individual wings (a Left Wing and a Right Wing). To do this,
you will follow the applicable instructions for each panel and fasten off where
indicated. Work into BLO stitches for one wing, then working into FLO stitches
instead of BLO stitches for the other wing. Once all panels are complete for each
individual wing, you will layer the panels and sew them together as indicated in
the assembly instructions (except you will sew two separate wings and not one
long shawl). BE FOREWARNED, working into FLO stitches VS. working into
BLO stitches will NOT result in exactly the same texture. If you are doing this, it
would be best to follow the next suggestion (#3), adding an accent color by
following the edge of each feather with SC and Slip Stitches. Individual wings
will be soft/floppy; if you would like slightly more structured wings, make them
double sided (see #1 above), or use a thicker yarn or smaller hook.
3) No matter what kind of wings (whole or two separate pieces) you make, you
also have the option to use an accent color and SC around the entire edge of every
feather on every panel. This will accent each feather and it will stabilize the shawl
even further. This option is time intensive and yarn consuming, and it is not
necessary for the finished product. Instructions for how to do this are in the
Assembly Section.
4) The wings, as written, are over 6 feet wide with worsted weight yarn and an H
5mm hook. The wings could be made smaller by using a lighter weight yarn, a
smaller hook, or both (note that using a smaller hook with worsted weight yarn
will result in a shawl with less drape and more structure). Alternatively, you could
also choose to just make Panel 2 and Panel 3 if you wanted much smaller wings
without using very light weight yarn (for example, child sized wings).
5) You can use whatever colors you want for the wings – You can use a different
color for each panel or all the same color. It is up to you! The wings are
constructed one feather at a time, so using a gradient yarn would work very well,
too. Choose a yarn with a bit of stretch so the shawl will drape and not be stiff.

BEFORE YOU ASSEMBLE: You should be aware that you have options!
Read the entire Assembly Section before continuing so you know your
options.
1) At a minimum, you will need one of each panel. If you want to, you can also
make an additional Panel 2 and Panel 3, or an additional Panel 1, 2, and 3 and then
sew all 5 or 6 panels together so that the wings will be double-sided. This will use

a lot more yarn and create a much heavier piece.
2) If you made individual wings (a Left Wing and a Right Wing), they will be
sewn together in the same way as the directions below, you will simply sew two
separate wings instead of one long shawl.
3) No matter what kind of wings (whole or two separate pieces) you made, you
can also decide to use an accent color and SC around the entire edge of every
feather on every panel. This will accent each feather and the lines between each
feather, and it will stabilize the shawl even further – though it is time and yarn
consuming and unnecessary for the finished product. If you decide to do this, you
may wish to go up one hook size and keep your tension relatively loose to keep the
edges from curling.
**Note: Outlining each individual panel before assembly (detailed below) will
create a much heavier piece. If you wish to have feather outlines but would
like less weight to the shawl, you may try assembling the shawl first and then
outlining only the top edge of the entire shawl and those parts of the feathers
that show on top of the shawl. This is not detailed in this section, but you can
loosely follow the edging directions below to achieve this.
ACCENT To outline the wings with an Accent color: (See Full Pattern for detailed photos).
EDGING Attach the yarn to the OC of any panel.
(Optional)
SC along the top edge of the entire shawl, then around the edge of the first
available feather.
To avoid puckering at the points where your feathers join, Skip the final Stitch in
the “V” created where this feather joins the next (you will work into this when you
outline the next feather).
Insert your hook in the first available BLO loop (or FLO for separate wings) in the
ridge separating this feather from the next. SC along the leftover BLO (or FLO)
stitches which separate this feather from the next all the way up to the base of the
feather (at the top of the shawl).
Starting in the Stitch you skipped previously (the one in the “V” of the feather
join), SC around the tip of the next feather.
Skip the final Stitch in the “V” created where this feather joins the next (you will
work into this when you outline the next feather). SC along the leftover BLO (or
FLO) stitches separating the feathers all the way up to the base of the feather (top
of the shawl).

Continue in this way until you have outlined all the feathers in the panel.
**Pro-Tip: If the ends of your feathers are starting to curl, add increases
where the feathers curve along the bottom edge.
**Note: Not all feather lines reach the top of the shawl – some stop short,
intersecting at an angle with the feather on one side.
On these short feather lines, you will not continue to SC up to the top of the shawl.
Instead, after you SC in the last available BLO (or FLO) loop, you will connect
your current feather edging with the one next to it (the edging you just made). To
do this, Sl St into closest loop of the Slip St on that previous edging. Ch 1, Turn.
Continue the edging as stated above.
ASSEMBLY To attach the panels: Lay out the wings, layered on top of each other (with panel 1
1. on the bottom and 3 on the top).
2. Using yarn tails (or long pieces of matching yarn) and a darning needle, sew the
pieces together.
Use small, neat stitches to attach the panels together. If you are using solid color
panels or the same yarn throughout, then you can sew through all three panels at
the same time. Since your yarn will blend in easily, it should not matter if your
stitches show through the back of the wings.
If you are using different color panels, then you should use tiny stitches to attach
each panel. Sew around all edges, capturing only the visible side of the work. Do
NOT insert the needle through to the back of the work while attaching if you do
not want stitches showing through on the back of the wings. See full pattern for
example photo.
Choose ONE of the following options for sewing your shawl:

A. Stitch around the ENTIRE edge of panel 2 and panel 3 to attach. You may also
want to tack the feathers in place at points throughout the rest of central area of
each panel so that it does not come loose/stretch out. Weave in ends.
B. Stitch along the top edge of all three panels to attach them to each other, but
then do not stitch around the edges of the feathers and leave them loose. This will
create a looser moving shawl piece.
