Colour Changes for this pattern
Always change colour in the stitch BEFORE you
need the new colour to be “active”. The stitch you
should change colour in has been indicated Backloop Stitches
throughout this pattern.

1. Insert your hook into the stitch

2. Yarn over with your current colour, and pull up a
loop.
3. Hold that colour out of the way (down the length
of your hook).

Backloop is when you work you stitches

into the loop on the back of the stitch.
This will leave a line of frontloops free
on the outside of your work.

4. Lay your new colour down alongside it, and

pinch both at the base of the stitch you’ve half-
worked.

Frontloop Stitches

5. Yarn over with your new colour, and pull through

all loops on hook to complete the single crochet.

Frontloop is when you work you stitches

into the loop on the front of the stitch.
In this pattern these are executed into
the frontloop left free in previous rows.
6. If you stitch is sitting a little loosely or strangely,
give the two tails a gentle tug to adjust it.
7. If you are done with your old colour you can trim
it off, and tie a knot with the two tails to stop
them slipping.

around (10 in total).

Assembly
You can make a head by puffing out the face piece and stuffing it, but these assembly
instructions are going to focus on the open mouth. Start by flattening the face out, so
that the DC FLO is the centre top, with the nose at the point, and the decreases
1.
forming the two edges. Next we are going to attach the eyes. Mine are inserted into
row 8, with ~3 stitches visible between. If the stem of your eye is long enough, snap on
through both layers, otherwise one layer is fine.

Next, we are going to assemble the mouth. Grab the top mouth piece – the one with 8
teeth. Line up the front of it so that there is one row of white between nose and top of
2. mouth. Scrunch the edges of the pink edges against mouth so that teeth point down,
and pin so there is a white lip the whole way around. This will cause a pocket at the
back, as the face is broader across than the inner mouth piece is. Just pin for now.

6
Assembly
We are going to do the same to the bottom jaw now. Line up inner piece near front so
once again there is an even lip around the outside. There should be no pocket at the
3. back this time as they are sized to match one another. Scrunch the edges to make sure
the teeth point up, pin in place. Give the pieces a test chomp to make sure the top can
fit over the bottom, then sew the inner mouth pieces to the respective head pieces.

Looking at the body, the starting magic ring is the butt, and the pointier end is the
neck. Pin the middle of the pink on the lower jaw so that the middle of the pink crosses
over the finishing off point of the body. Flip over. Pin the middle of the white edge so
that it meets the white belly patch. Take each side of the jaw, and pin it where it meets
4.
the body – you will be curving it slightly as the body is a round potato, not a flat
surface.
Before sewing on you need to place the top jaw over the top and make sure the
pieces will still fit together with the bottom jaw pinned on. Sew on bottom jaw.

5. Pin the finish off point of the tongue at the back of the bottom jaw. Sew down.
Fold the back of the face up so you can better see the back edge of the
6. inner mouth. Line that up with the pink of the bottom jaw. Pin down, then
sew pink to pink.

Fold the face back down and pin it to body. How you pin this will decide
7.
how open the mouth is, so take your time! Sew it down.

7
Assembly
8. Line up each ear on the edge of the white behind each eye. Sew on.
9. Line up “fat” end of the tail on top of starting magic ring so that it curves upwards. Sew.

Finally, flatten the tops of the legs with the finishing off point at one end of the opening.
Line the top of them up with the line where the belly meets the grey. Pin two at the front
10. of the body, and two at the back. Set your opossum on a flat surface and make sure
they aren’t wobbly. If they are, stand it so that three legs touch the ground, and then
lower whichever leg is still up in the air until it also touches the ground. Sew in place.
