Facts about Food in Pakistan


Directions: Read the article given below and attempt the exercise.

Breakfast: A traditional Pakistani breakfast is a big meal that could include halwa, puri,
chaney, paey, nihari. It can include parathas, omelette, curry and tea. However, many working
people and students just have milk and cereals, toast and eggs or sandwiches and juice.

Lunch: For many working people in the city lunch is now a very quick meal. Over the last few
years there has been a growth of fast-food places where you can get a quick, filling lunch.
Many people just have sandwiches, burgers, salad, daal, rice or fruit. School children either
bring their lunch from home or buy snacks from the school canteen.

Tea: It can just be a hot or cold drink or a mini meal. When there is a tea party or some guests
are around, in such cases there might be biscuits, cakes, pakoras, samosas, nimco or other
snacks.

Dinner: This is the main meal of the day for many people and is usually eaten between 8:00 p.m. to 10:00
p.m. It is the time when the whole family may sit together to enjoy a meal. Everyday dinners
could vary from chicken, beef or mutton curry and roti to pulao, vegetable or daal. While
special dinners range from Qorma, biryani, tikka or nihari.

International Food: Pakistanis also like food from other countries. There are some very
successful Chinese restaurants that serve everyone’s favourite food. Some Italian and Thai
food is also available in big restaurants. Pizzas, pasta dishes, pies and steaks are also very
popular.
