Hi! I’m Martin. I love travelling. I went to İstanbul on the 14th of July. It was
incredible. It was the capital city of the Ottoman Empire.
İstanbul preserves many historic buildings, mosques, palaces and towers. I visited
the Galata Tower, Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia and Topkapı Palace. There are
different means of transportation. I preferred the tram to see the attractions. I ate
grilled fish sandwich in Eminönü. I really loved it.
The weather was hot and sunny. I stayed at an all-inclusive hotel for 5 days. It was
comfortable and not very expensive.
I suppose Topkapı Palace is the most beautiful place in İstanbul because to me, it
is an important structure, and it’s a cultural miracle.

Celebrating birthdays is an important tradition all over the world. In many countries,
people enjoy blowing out the candles while they are making wishes. But every culture
has different traditions to celebrate their birthdays. Here are some around the world.
England - Children like drinking squash at birthday parties. It’s a type of fruit juice. Some
families enjoy putting objects into the birthday cake. If the birthday person finds a gold
coin, it symbolizes wealth in the coming year.
China - They usually celebrate their birthdays with their families. The birthday boy or girl
eats a bowl of long noodles. They do not bite the noodles slowly, but slurp as soon as
possible. Slurping noodles symbolizes a long life.
Canada - The birthday child greases his nose with butter for good luck. They believe that
the greasy nose will protect the birthday child from bad luck.
Jamaica - Family members or friends throw flour at the birthday person to express their
good wishes. Sometimes they wet the skin first, just to make sure the flour sticks and
becomes more difficult to remove!

NEW E MAIL

To: Dr. Paul Forest

Subject: My health problem

I am writing because I need your advice about my problem. I am 15 years

old and I am fat. I feel like everyone is looking at me. As I’ve got extremely
low self esteem, I prefer staying at home most of the time. I haven’t done
shopping for clothes for ages because nothing looks good on me. I’m a
member of a fitness club but I haven’t been there for two months. I have no
time because of school work. What’s more, I eat a lot, especially fried food and
chocolate. I know they’re unhealthy but I can’t stop eating. What should I do?
