INTRODUCTION
The Drawing Board (TDB), an International Architecture
Competition, was conceptualized by Rohan Builders &
Mindspace Architects in the year 2016 to encourage
architecture and design students to test their understanding
and skills on concerns of architecture, urban design and the
built environment.
The competition aims to improve community life while
protecting local heritage. Annually, prominent jurors from
various nations guide, judge, and nurture students. The
competition's overall goal is to strengthen and indirectly
impact the Sustainable Development Goals through
architecture education and social transformation.
TDB is a unique project by any real estate business that strives
to benefit the greater community by educating students on
how architecture shapes how communities live. Inspire
students to learn, unlearn, and relearn while increasing their
employability through creative thinking and skill building.

AN INSERT INTO THE HISTORY

DESIGN BRIEF
Historically Badami has held a significant role in the south
India. It has been ruled by several kingdoms and was also the
regal capital of the Badami Chalukyas. These kings have
progressively added and improvised Badami’s cultural and
architectural aspects. The Agastya Lake and the historic
structures around it in particular stands testimony to this.
Geographically, the location chosen is set around the
Agastya Lake. The lake itself acts as a bowl encompassing
various things and focusing on the Booth Nath temple as its
crown jewel. The lake is flanked by sandstone rocks on 3
sides and the settlement on one side. As we climb the rocks
around the lake there are rock cut caves that date back to
the 6th century. Other prominent temples and a stepped
bund line the lake along the edge of the settlement.

THE SITE
The site is located at the base of the north fort of Badami which overlooks the lake, and is
penetrated by deep canyon-like crevices through which climbs a straight path, defined
by a gateway. Nestled between Agastya Lake and the rocks in the background, the site is
approached by a narrow 7m road defined by a gateway. Pedestrian path- A walk along
the ghats of the lake with a flight of steps leads one towards the site.
The design intent is to connect these various layers and still create a vibrant experience
in the museum.

DESIGN PROGRAM
The program is to redesign the existing Badami archaeological museum. Badami has a
settlement of skilled craftspeople, including weavers of traditional Ilkal sarees. The
museum should have spaces to celebrate this skill and craft of the locals The built up
area has to be 7500 sft-. In addition to the exhibition space, museum should also house
functions like restrooms, an open-air theater, administration offices, a café and other
ancillary facilities.
The demarcated site is located on the bank of the Agastya lake. The immediate
surroundings consist of the Honkadakatte Anjaneya temple and the Mallikarjuna gudi
along the sides of the existing museum which has to be demolished and redesigned. The
existing Museum faces the lake and is set with a majestic backdrop of the golden red
sandstone rocky mountain. A fort wall with large gateways and a honda (stepped well)
are also in close proximity. The site location is chosen strategically as one can experience
the lake, rock cut caves, the temples and the natural context together cohesively.

Eligibility Criteria
Participation is open to any undergraduate student, whether full-time or part-time, who is
either enrolled in an academic year of an architecture institution at the present time or have
finished all of their coursework by June 2023.

Submission Details
The first stage will be design presentation limited to 4-A3 size sheets in PDF format only
(no Auto-cad format) with maximum resolution up to 50 MB only.

3. Any specific details if required.
You can use any software that you feel useful to design the submission entry.

Judging Criteria
1. How well the design responds to the site and existing context.
2. How well you respond to the existing levels & elements like the gateways, trees, water,
backdrop of rock & the ghats.

FAQ
Q: What is the limit or cap on the number
of team members and can anyone
participate individually?
A: A team can have up to three members
and cannot exceed this number. The
participants who desire to participate
individually can do so by filling and
submitting the details of the individual on
the registration form.
Q: Can students from different
colleges/university form a group and
register?
A: Yes. You can register. Collaboration is the
key!
Q: Will participants receive certificates for
participation in the competition?
A: Yes all the participants would receive an e-
certificate for participation.
Q: What are the modes of submissions?
What should be the submission file size?
A: The participants are requested to submit
their work on four A3 sheets in PDF file
format. The file size should not exceed
more than 50MB. The files are to be
uploaded on the website after logging in
using the registered username and
password.
Q: Can the people pursuing their Masters
Degree participate?
A: No. This competition is only for the students
who are pursuing their graduation or have
successfully completed their B.Arch. degree
in the current year.
Q: What is the process to retrieve the
forgotten password?
A: You can request for your set password by
clicking on the ‘Forgot Password’ option.
The password will be sent to the registered
email id.
