2 • 2012-2013 HONOR ROLL OF DONORS

Dear Alumni, Parents, and Friends,
On the following pages, we are pleased to recognize the support of our donors
and the accomplishments of our students and faculty during the 2012-2013
academic year.

It was an eventful year with numerous highlights, including our surpassing the
$40 million goal of Power to Innovate: The Campaign for Philadelphia University more
than a year ahead of schedule. As of September 2013, we have raised more than
$50 million because of the generosity of the PhilaU community.

Thank you to everyone who has invested in the present and future of Philadelphia
University. If you have not yet participated, we encourage you to consider doing
so at a level that makes sense for you before the Campaign formally closes in June
2014; every gift counts, and every gift helps our students.

Put simply, the Campaign’s overall goal is to make PhilaU the model for professional university education. Our current and
future students leverage their PhilaU education to launch and grow successful, rewarding careers. With greater than $3 million
raised for scholarships and financial aid, the Campaign is providing access to more and more women and men who require
assistance to complete their degrees. We continue to build a world-class university. In the last few years, we have:

• Formalized our signature Nexus Learning approach

• Founded the unique Kanbar College of Design, Engineering and Commerce
• Built the highly innovative DEC Center
• Exponentially increased industry education partnerships
• Launched PhilaU Online
• Reached a 96% success rate of recent graduates working in their fields of study or accepted to graduate school

According to our cornerstone benefactor, Maurice Kanbar ’52, H’03, “The number-one rule to follow: never be happy with
the way things are, always be thinking about how you can make it better.” There is no more important lesson to impart to
our students, regardless of their field of study or intended profession (indeed, these words are permanently posted in the
DEC Center lobby). Through your generosity, “making it better” is exactly what you’re doing at PhilaU. Our students are
being prepared to follow suit, bringing to bear their leadership, innovation and creativity on making their workplaces, their
communities and—why not?—the world, better.

On behalf of our students and faculty, thank you for your dedication to Philadelphia University. With your continued support,
we are educating the next generation of leaders who are “Powered to Do What’s Now, Powered to Do What’s Next.”

Sincerely,

Eileen Martinson ‘86 Stephen Spinelli Jr., Ph.D.

WHY I INVEST IN PhilaU:
“On behalf of the Elsie H. Hillman and the Henry L. Hillman foundations, I am proud of
our partnership with Philadelphia University to help support the Arlen Specter Center for
Public Service and the restoration of the historic Roxboro House, the Center’s future home
on campus. Pennsylvania has been blessed with many great Senators and Governors, but
few have had the impact on helping Pennsylvania as our longest serving Senator, Arlen
Specter. My home town of Pittsburgh would not be recognized as a renaissance city as it
is today had it not been for Arlen Specter. During our city’s hardest economic times in the
early ’80’s, the Senator worked hard to help the struggling steel industry, funding for job
retraining, and providing support for those who needed it the most. In addition, although he
never compromised on his principles, Arlen was a leader who was strong enough and wise
enough to reach across the political aisle and find common ground in order to advance the
common good.

“I am deeply impressed by PhilaU’s collaborative approach to forging partnerships such

as the innovative agreement with the University of Pittsburgh to help organize and manage the Senator’s papers and
memorabilia, which will benefit everyone in Pennsylvania and beyond who wish to study his 50 years of public service. I
am also excited by how the Arlen Specter Center will provide unique opportunities for Philadelphia University faculty and
students to plan and design exhibitions based on the Specter Collection, including the inaugural exhibition this fall on the
Senator’s pivotal role in the Warren Commission’s investigation of the Kennedy assassination. Our investment in advancing
the preservation and access to the Specter Collection and related educational programming honors Arlen, something many
of us in Pennsylvania believe is important to do.”

Kanbar College Dedicated, DEC Center Opens and

Maurice Kanbar Named “Innovator of the Year”
Philadelphia University officially dedicated the naming of the Kanbar College of
Design, Engineering and Commerce and opened the DEC Center on November
8, 2012, unveiling the newest building on campus that is as innovative and
unique as the Kanbar College curriculum.

At the dedication ceremony, PhilaU honored Maurice Kanbar ’52, H’03 as the
University’s first “Innovator of the Year,” thanking the noted entrepreneur and
philanthropist for his generous support of
the University.

The DEC Center officially opened for classes in January 2013 and has quickly
become a hub of academic life on campus.

Ceremonial Groundbreaking for the
Arlen Specter Center for Public Policy
On May 23, 2013, a ceremonial groundbreaking for the Arlen Specter Center
was attended by Specter family members and friends, Center supporters and
PhilaU faculty, staff and students. Author, radio host and media commentator
Michael Smerconish talked about the life, career and legacy of Arlen Specter,
a close personal friend of his. Those attending had the opportunity to preview
the first exhibition of the Specter Center, focusing on the Warren Commission
investigation of President Kennedy’s assassination. The exhibition will be on
display in the Paul J. Gutman Library from October 21, 2013 to April 11, 2014.

The Theodore C. Search Society
Established in 2011, the Theodore C. Search Society recognizes those individuals who demonstrate
leadership through philanthropy. Named in honor of the University’s founder, the Search Society is
the institution’s most prestigious donor society, honoring the steadfast commitment of our most loyal
supporters.

As key investors in the next generation of leaders, Search Society members help bring our mission to life
by fostering an environment of growth, innovation and excellence in education. Their generosity directly
impacts the student experience, creating unparalleled educational opportunities at the University.

Search Society members contribute a minimum of $1,000, which may be given to The PhilaU Fund or
designated to a specific University initiative, and they receive special recognition and a variety of benefits. The Search Society
Young Members recognition level encourages and promotes leadership giving by our most recent graduates. The program
recognizes—with full benefits—the graduates of the last ten years who contribute $100 and above.

To become a member of the Search Society or for more information, please contact Elona Lakuriqi, director of alumni relations and
annual giving, at 215.951.2186 or lakuriqie@PhilaU.edu.

WHY I INVEST IN PhilaU:

“As I retraced the steps I made so many years ago as a student, they were but small reminders

Celebrating the 20th Anniversary of Gutman Library
Philadelphia University celebrated the 20th anniversary of the Paul J. Gutman
Library on November 9, 2012 with a reception and ceremony.

The Gutman Library, named after the son of the late Alvin Gutman, a long-time
member of the University’s Board of Trustees, opened in 1992 and received the
prestigious Louis I. Kahn Award for outstanding design. The Library currently supports
Philadelphia University students with more than 150,000 volumes, 80 computers,
print and electronic resources, and three floors of study and research space.

Mary Bert Gutman, the widow of Alvin, and her grandson Matt Gutman (Paul’s
son), a national and international correspondent for ABC News, addressed the
crowd of students, faculty, staff and friends of the University celebrating the event.
