Instytut Teatralny im. Zbigniewa Raszewskiego zaprasza w dniach 18-20 listopada 2021
na międzynarodową konferencję naukową „Wojtyła-Grotowski &. Religijny horyzont
nowoczesnego teatru i dramatu w Polsce i na świecie”
Przyjrzymy się szeroko pojętym związkom nowoczesnego teatru polskiego z religią, post-
sekularyzmem i post-religijnością oraz różnorodnymi praktykami duchowymi.
The Zbigniew Raszewski Theatre Institute invites you to an international scholarly
conference on November 18-20 2021 entitled „Wojtyła-Grotowski &. The religious
horizon of modern theater and drama in Poland and around the world”.

W roku 2020 przypadła setna rocznica urodzin Karola Wojtyły, papieża Jana Pawła II –
świętego, teologa i filozofa, polityka i patrioty, a wreszcie, u zarania swojego duchowego
rozwoju – artysty. Zaplanowana na rok jubileuszowy międzynarodowa konferencja nie
mogła się odbyć na żywo ze względu na pandemię COVID-19. Tym bardziej cieszymy się,
że w tym roku możemy wykorzystać tę szczególną rocznicę, aby w osobie artysty-kapłana
dostrzec symptom i symbol ważnego dla polskiej kultury zjawiska – szeroko pojętych
związków nowoczesnego teatru polskiego z religią: z chrześcijaństwem i z katolicyzmem,
z innymi religiami, ale też z post-sekularyzmem i post-religijnością oraz różnorodnymi
praktykami duchowymi.

W tym kontekście nie sposób nie pomyśleć o innej osobie, równie symbolicznej
i symptomatycznej, stojącej zarazem obok i naprzeciw Wojtyły, jako dramaturga,
performera i teoretyka, czyli o Jerzym Grotowskim, wybitnym reformatorze teatru
światowego, którego twórcza wyobraźnia wywodzi się wszak w przeważającej mierze z tych
samych – polskich, romantycznych i chrześcijańskich – inspiracji.

Jednak przestrzeń duchowa, która rozciąga się pomiędzy Wojtyłą a Grotowskim, nie
zamyka się w granicach wyznaczonych przez te dwa nazwiska. Tytuł konferencji wyraża
zatem wolę poszerzenia pola zainteresowań oraz nadzieję na przekroczenie granic:
estetycznych, językowych, kulturowych. W haśle „Wojtyła-Grotowski &” zawiera się pytanie
o dalsze losy źródłowych treści polskiego teatru we współczesnych realizacjach
scenicznych i w nowych dramatach oraz w konfrontacji z dokonaniami twórców z innych
krajów.
The year 2020 marks the centenary of the birth of Karol Wojtyla, Pope John Paul II – saint
and, theologian and philosopher, politician and patriot, and finally, at the dawn of his
spiritual development – artist. Taking advantage of the jubilee occasion, Z. Raszewski
Theatre Institute in Warsaw is organizing an international scientific conference, combined
with a lively debate and practical workshops. Scheduled for the anniversary year, it could
not take place live due to the pandemic. We are now returning to this project. The
conference will take place November 18-20, 2021, at the Theater Institute.

We decided to take advantage of this special anniversary to see in the person of the artist-
priest a symptom and symbol of a phenomenon important for Polish culture – the broadly
understood relations of modern Polish theater with religion: with Christianity and
Catholicism, with other religions, but also with post-secularism and post-religionism, as well
as various spiritual practices. In this context it is impossible not to think of another person,
equally symbolic and symptomatic, standing at the same time next to and opposite Wojtyla,
as playwright, performer and theoretician, namely Jerzy Grotowski, an eminent reformer of
the world theater, whose creative imagination derives, after all, predominantly from the
same – Polish, Romantic and Christian – inspirations.

However, the spiritual space that stretches between Wojtyla and Grotowski is not closed
within the boundaries defined by these two names… The title of our conference, therefore,
expresses our will to broaden the field of interest and our hope to cross aesthetic, linguistic
and cultural boundaries. In the slogan „Wojtyła-Grotowski &” we can find the question of
further fate of the source content of Polish theater in contemporary stage productions and
new dramas, and in confrontation with the achievements of artists from other countries.

INTERPRETACJI DRAMATÓW KAROLA WOJTYŁY I TEATRU JERZEGO
GROTOWSKIEGO / The Holy Universe. Allegory and Allegoresis in
Wojtyła's dramas and in Grotowski's theater
Tematem wystąpienia jest zaprezentowanie pojęcie alegorii i alegorezy w interpretacji
wybranych dramatów Karola Wojtyły i teatru Jerzego Grotowskiego. Stawiam tezę, iż o tym,
czy w zabiegach alegoryka dostrzeżemy indywidualną cechę, czy też będziemy doszukiwać
się w nim znaczenia wyższego rzędu decyduje w dużej mierze nastawienie
interpretacyjne egzegetyka (alegorety). Analiza zasadniczych cech alegorii sprzyja
przygotowaniu narzędzi, dzięki którym będzie możliwa holistyczna hermeneutyka dzieła
literackiego i teatralnego spod znaku Wojtyły&Grotowskiego. Autor pragnie wykazać, iż w
teatralnym uniwersum Wojtyły&Grotowskiego (w oparciu o dwa charakterystyczne
przykłady, m.in. Przed sklepem jubilera, Brat naszego Boga, Książę niezłomny, Apocalipsis
cum figuris) alegoria funkcjonuje jako wzorzec myśli (pattern of thought) i kondensator
znaczenia, zaś alegoreza otwiera drogę do objawienia „świętego universum” (P. Ricoeur), a
więc i mistyki, dla której nie potrzeba już słów. Reszta jest… krystaliczną ideą…
The theme of the speech is to present the concept of allegory and allegory in the
interpretation of the selected plays by Karol Wojtyła and Jerzy Grotowski's theater. I put
forward the thesis that whether we perceive an individual trait in the treatments of allegoric,
or whether we seek a higher-order meaning in it, is largely determined by the interpretative
attitude of the exegician (alegorets). The analysis of the essential features of the allegory is
conducive to the preparation of tools that will enable the holistic hermeneutics of the literary
and theatrical work under the sign of Wojtyła & Grotowski. The author wishes to show that
in the theatrical universe of Wojtyła & Grotowski (based on two characteristic examples,
e.g. Before the jeweler's shop, Brother of our God, The steadfast Prince, Apocalipsis cum
figuris), the allegory functions as a pattern of thought and a meaning capacitor, while the
alegoresis opens the way to the revelation of the "holy universe" (P. Ricoeur), and thus also
the mysticism for which words are no longer needed. The rest is ... a crystal idea...
