Introduction
With so many Reiki Courses that are available now, you may ask why I decided to
undertake the writing of a new course. I have several reasons for writing this course.
My primary reason is that while learning Reiki and getting familiar with its uses I started
doing research beyond what I was taught. I wanted to truly understand all there was to
know about Reiki and how to use it to help others.

That is where I ran into some trouble. There are thousands of web-sites with information
about Reiki; some even provide the courses for free. A few of those will do the
attunements for free also. However, most do not agree on various different aspects of
Reiki and how it was originally taught. So everyone, it would seem, decided to just do
their own thing.

In this course I have attempted to give the most popular versions of what I found while
researching Reiki. And, well, yes I have added in a little of what I have learned while
using Reiki on myself and others. This is by no means the most comprehensive collection
on the subject, nor is it designed to be. Just as Reiki works differently for and on
everyone, all students of the art of Reiki Healing should study and learn what works best
for them.

Throughout the text I have given different sides of some of the most controversial
subjects with in Reiki training, and I urge you to do some research for yourself. I have
not traveled to Japan, not talked with anyone that studied under the original teacher,
Dr. Mikao Usui. But, with some willingness to learn you will find the things that best suit
you and your practice of Reiki.

I also began this course as just an informational handout to some of my clients. I was
attuned with one attunement in a course that covered all three levels, and in my opinion
that worked just fine. I have informally taught others Reiki and have done the Total
Master Attunement for those that wanted it to have it.

I intended that if I ever formally taught Reiki that would be the way I did it also, since
what is the use in doing separate attunements if one works.

However, that plan didn‟t work; as I was approached by some of my clients who wanted
to learn Reiki but didn‟t want to take that big of a step. Some of the clients I work with
weren‟t sure that they wanted to get that into learning to use Reiki for themselves. I
was asked to break it down, so I have.

I decided to make this Reiki Level 1 Course free to all, for those that do not want to
learn Distance Healing or how to do the Attunements that are taught in Level 2 and the
Master/Teacher Level. This will also give those that are unfamiliar with Reiki a chance

©2008 Mary Morgan Tailored Life Coaching

to explore Reiki Healing and Techniques to be able to make a better decision of whether
or not they wish to continue.

I will still offer the one Total Master Attunement with materials for all three levels to
those that already know that they wish to pursue further study in Reiki. I will also be
providing the material in three different blocks of learning material, with three different
attunements, for those that prefer to study that way. This first course will remain free,
and I will charge for Level 2, Master/Teacher Level, and the combined course.

I will work with those that cannot afford to continue their study on an individual basis, as
I do not feel it is right to turn people away from learning to heal others with an energy
that we were all born with; if they truly have the desire to learn and honestly cannot
afford the courses.

Many Reiki Teachers would not agree with this decision; however, I prefer to help as
many as I can and this is the way I figured out to do that best. Many others may tell you
that by selecting a teacher with such ‘loose’ guidelines in the teaching method you will
not really know Reiki. I believe that since the source of the energy is God, and this
energy is in all of us when we are born, therefore, I am just making you aware of it.

I have attempted to keep my religious beliefs in God and Jesus Christ limited in this text,
since Reiki is a spiritual non-religion based healing technique. However, all reference to
God cannot be totally left out of Reiki teachings since the source of the energy used in
Reiki comes from God. Many people call the source of the energy by many different
names to fit their religious beliefs and that is fine. But, to me it is God and that is the
basis I have written from to simplify things.

As a Life Coach, Reiki is a tool in my tool bag to help others; it is not just a business for
me. Remember through your studies that I am here to teach, help, and guide you in
learning all that you desire to learn about Reiki. Please, do not hesitate to contact me
throughout your training with questions, comments and concerns that arise. I do not
know everything about it, but I have learned a lot and wish to share that knowledge with
you!

Love & Light,

What is Reiki?
Reiki is pronounced Ray-key, however since there is no “R” sound in Japanese it may
actually be spoken as Lay-key or Day-key. The meaning of the word Reiki is usually
taught as Universal Life Force Energy or Spiritually-Guided Energy. The two parts of the
word are broken down as: Rei, meaning Universal (the less religious way of saying God or
Divine) and Ki, meaning Life Force Energy. Ki is the same thing as Ti in Hawaiian, Chi in
Chinese, Light in Christianity and some even related it to the Super Strings in new
physics. No matter what you wish to call it, Ki is the energy that runs
through everything, all the time.

Reiki is fundamentally the term used to refer to a system of healing and

self-development re-discovered (some say discovered, some say created;
this will be discussed later on) in Japan in the early 20th century by Dr.
Mikao Usui (Usui- Sensei). This system is commonly referred as simply
“Reiki” or “Reiki Therapy” and the formal name is “Usui Reiki Ryoho”
which is “Usui Reiki Healing Method”.

Reiki has no religious affiliation, although it has been heavy influenced by spiritual and
therapeutic discipline, practice and ideals found in Shinto and Buddhism. Many people of
many different backgrounds and religions have taken the basics of Reiki and incorporated
it into their own styles. Resulting in many variations of the original Reiki, some of which
are still called Usui Reiki and some of which are “new” styles with their own names.

Even though Reiki has no affiliation with any specific religion, I must add that this is in
many ways the same type of healing that Jesus, and many other great leaders of other
faiths, used and taught.

Reiki Levels

Reiki is usually broken into and taught at three levels. There is some debate about which
levels Usui-Sensei used and what he called them. Actually some claim that there are
four levels and some claim that there are five levels. I teach that there are three levels,
with attunement at each of the three levels.

Level 1, Shoden, allows for the student to become aware of the energy, letting go and
letting the energy do its work. At this level students are taught what Reiki is, and what
it isn‟t. Attunement at this level allows the student to work with Reiki for self-healing
and for helping others. Level 1 is for those that wish to use this hands-on-method of
healing for themselves and others that are present with them.

Level 2, Okuden, allows for the student to learn the greater quality of the flow of Reiki,
through the use of symbols. There are three symbols that are taught at this level which

©2008 Mary Morgan Tailored Life Coaching

will help in setting the intent, enhancing the effectiveness, doing distance work, and
performing treatment at deeper psycho-emotional levels.

Level Master/Teacher, Shinpiden, allows for the student to gain knowledge of the ability
to pass on attunements to others. It is at this level that the student is attuned to the
fourth and final symbol and instructed in its use. Students at this level will also develop
a deeper understanding and connection to the Reiki experience.

Who can learn Reiki?

Reiki is from God, Goddess, Buddha, Allah, The Creator, Source, The Universal Mind, Your
Higher-Self, etc. (referred to from here on out as God), or whatever you personally wish
to call Him, Her, or It; and therefore anyone can learn to use Reiki. We are all equal and
were born with this energy already available to us. Therefore we all have the ability to
learn to heal ourselves and others. There are different levels of Reiki, but only the Reiki
Masters can attune others. An attunement simply makes one aware of

been attuned to the Master Level of Reiki, learned all of the symbols (Matthew 23:8)
and know how to send attunements others.

To use Reiki successfully the most important thing you need is an open mind and heart,
coupled with a desire to heal. Everyone that feels the desire to heal is led on a different
path, and you must choose if learning Reiki is the right path for you.

Many Reiki Teachers say you do not even have to believe that Reiki will work. It just
psy·cho·log·i·cal does. I do not agree with that. The psychological basis for my
(sīkə lójjik‟l) reasoning is medical research has proven the power of suggestion in
relating to the mind or
healing, and therefore has recognized that our physical bodies are
mental processes
dependent upon the spiritual or subconscious self. Meaning we have
to believe in something for it to manifest itself in our lives.

The conclusion being, the physiological basis is a physician has

power of Nature.

Theological basis is actually my Christian belief system. With Paul‟s teaching, recorded
the·o·log·i·ca in the New Testament, we are shown that the healing that we can give
(theè ə lójjik‟l) to each other is not miraculous as were the
relating to, using, engaged "And these signs

evidence.

So based on my beliefs, and the research I have done, along with the experiences I have
had with Reiki; both as a practitioner and receiver: those that either, do not believe in
the ability of the healer, the technique itself, or that healing of the spiritual kind comes
from a Higher Power; in my opinion will not be healed. So maybe a person doesn‟t have
to believe in Reiki, but from this viewpoint they must believe that healing can take place
for them in some way, from somewhere.

None of my opinions should stop you from learning Reiki and using it to heal yourself and
others. I just feel that you needed to be aware of where I, as your teacher, stand on the
topic of who can use Reiki. Do or don‟t do as you feel led; believe or don‟t believe as
you feel led. As you work with Reiki you will form your own opinions of this subject.

Reiki Principles

There are several versions of the Reiki Principles floating around today. The version that
is commonly agreed upon as being in the handbook
that Usui Sensei gave to his students is:

The secret art of inviting happiness

The miraculous medicine of all diseases
Just for today, do not be angry
Do not worry and be filled with gratitude
Devote yourself to your work and be kind to people
Every morning and evening, join your hands in
prayer,
Pray these words to your heart,
And chant these words with your mouth
Usui Reiki Treatment for the improvement of body and mind
-- The Founder …Mikao Usui

If you prefer to change the five basic statements to statements without negative words
then you can use this version:

The secret art of inviting happiness

The miraculous medicine of all diseases
Just for today, be calm
Be peaceful and be filled with gratitude
Devote yourself to your work and be kind to people
Every morning and evening, join your hands in prayer,
Pray these words to your heart,
And chant these words with your mouth
Usui Reiki Treatment for the improvement of body and mind

Some people have reported feeling more comfortable and more enlightened when saying
the principles in Japanese instead of American English, or any other language. If you
think you would like to try this you can look them up in several different places on the
internet.

It doesn‟t really matter which set of principles, one of these or another set you find, you
decide to use; as long as you do say them each morning and evening with your regular
meditation or prayers, and more significantly, as long as you live them. The meaning
behind these principles is more important than which words you use. The intent is to
bring about enlightenment, peaceful living, and calmness. Usui-Sensei gave these
principles to us so that we could learn and practice humility, gratitude, and kindness;
while at the same time being worry and anger free. By healing ourselves with Reiki and
living the five principles, we should find true knowledge, not of Reiki, but of ourselves.

©2008 Mary Morgan Tailored Life Coaching

Regardless of your spiritual path or religious beliefs you can incorporate the principles
set forth in Reiki. They probably go along with most religious precepts and beliefs
already established in your belief system.

Usui-Sensei taught Reiki as an enlightenment system, not just a means of healing. Most
of what has been passed down in the Western world only concentrates on the healing.
Today there are many teachers that are teaching Reiki as only a healing system and some
are even teaching it as a business system. It was however; originally designed to connect
us to the Universal Source of love and light, and it just happened to allow healing also.

I personally do not advocate teaching Reiki as a business only, as that is gaining profit
from others suffering, by using something that we are all given freely at birth. But, on
the other hand I do not go in depth as Reiki was originally taught for the simple reason
that we all already have our separate belief systems and can just add Reiki into those
practices. If you do however, wish more in-depth study on meditation, spirituality, or
religious beliefs you can contact me at: tailoredlifecoaching@gmail.com , if you require
assistance in an area of religion that I am not well versed in I will help you to find
someone that can help you.

History of Reiki

I am going to impart to you the history of Reiki as I

learned it. There are many different versions of the
beginning of Reiki floating around. You can do research
to find the different versions of the story if you wish.
There is really no way for us to know which story is
more complete or more correct since most of the people
involved have already passed away. For this reason I
choose to relate this version to you, since through my
research I found this to be one of the more accepted
succession of events.

One of the main points that vary greatly from person to

person is whether Dr. Usui discovered, re-discovered, or
created Reiki. I choose to believe that he re-discovered
Reiki. Again, research of this proved unhelpful since
there is really no way of knowing exactly how his knowledge, and use of Reiki and its
symbols came about.

As I have already told you Dr. Usui made this re-discovery in Japan in the early 20th
century. It is said that he wanted to learn how to heal, and traveled a lot in search of a
method or teaching that would work. It is believed that at one point he went on a search

©2008 Mary Morgan Tailored Life Coaching

to find out how Jesus healed, but had no luck and returned to Japan, where he studied
Buddhism. Others believe that he was a Christian Monk.

Since he could find no one that could teach him how to heal, he decided to learn on his
own from the Universe. He went to Mt. Kurama for a fasting retreat. On the 21st day of
his retreat he saw the Reiki energy coming towards his third-eye. His first reaction was
to run, but he did not and the energy struck him, rendering him unconscious. While he
was unconscious he was attuned to the Reiki energy and shown the symbols and how to
use them.

When he awakened, he began to run back to his temple to inform his teacher of his
experience. While running he stubbed his toe on a rock, he instinctively put his hand
over his toe and it healed quickly. On his way back he stopped in a restaurant and
ordered a rather large meal, one that would have made anyone else sick after fasting for
that many days. However, he had no trouble eating the meal. There was a woman in
the restaurant that was sick and he healed her. When he got back to his temple he found
his teacher sick and bedridden. He used the Reiki to heal him also. These events
became known as the “4 Miracles”.

Usui-Sensei began going around healing the poor and deformed, and he was able to
physically heal many of them. However, he found that many others did not want to be
healed because they had grown accustomed to being lazy and begging was easy for them
to do as a living. This was a hard time for him, and supposedly where the „energy-
exchange‟ idea came from. He had people bring gifts to him, no matter how small, in
exchange for him teaching them his method of healing.

He traveled Japan and China, healing and teaching others. During this time he opened
many clinics because of the large numbers of people willing to learn Reiki. Usui-Sensei
was said to have been a warm, caring, and generous man who passed this method of
healing onto many people. Usui-Sensei died in 1926 of a stroke, after having taught
approximately 16 „Masters‟ or teachers. One of them was, Dr. Chujiro Hayashi, a retired
military man.

Dr. Hayashi opened his own clinic and focused on where to

position the hands for which types of ailments. He knew that
World War II was coming and that he would be called back to
service, and because of his peaceful nature and desire only to
heal others he said to have simply left his body during his last
workshop. One of his students before he died was Mrs. Hawayo
Takata, to whom he taught the Master level of Reiki.

©2008 Mary Morgan Tailored Life Coaching

Mrs. Takata was born in Hawaii in 1900; she traveled to Japan because her sister was
dying and while in Japan she became ill also. She was hospitalized and told that she
needed surgery, and she asked if there were any other methods
available. They told her about Hayashi-Sensei‟s Reiki clinic. It
was in that clinic that she was healed and taught the first two
levels of Reiki. She was taught the third and final „Master‟ level
in Hawaii when Hayashi-Sensei travelled to Hawaii.

Takata-Sensei opened clinics and became a well known healer

and teacher, attuning her students up to level 2. Takata-Sensei
began attuning Reiki Masters in 1970, in one weekend long
classes that she charged $10,000 for. She did not allow her
students to take notes, not even of the symbols, which is why
there are so many variations of the symbols today. It is unclear why she didn‟t allow her
students to take notes, however there are a great many theories about her reasons.
However, her reasons are unimportant, and what is important is because of her there are
now millions of Reiki practitioners around the world.

Legalities of Reiki

Before you actually being to learn to use Reiki, you need to be aware of the legal issues
that may be involved should you decide to practice Reiki as a profession. There is a
chance that, depending on which state you are in, you may be
breaking the law because Reiki is a hands-on technique. However,
there are many people in every state that practice Reiki
professionally without trouble, so there are ways to work with and
around state laws.

Some states require that Reiki Practitioners become Licensed

Massage Therapists with the State Massage Therapist Board, in
order to practice professionally, because you actually touch a person during sessions.
Make sure you find out what your state laws are before you begin your practice.

A simple way around this regulation is to become an ordained minister. If you live in the
US, you are protected by the Constitution, if you are practicing your religious beliefs, and
since Reiki is spiritual in nature you may feel drawn to becoming ordained. If you do not
feel that is the right way for you to go you can simply offer your services for a donation
rather than a set fee, and you should be fine, however; make sure you check your state
laws carefully before trying this.

The best way to check your state laws is to contact your local Massage Board, be honest
and up front with them and they will tell you if there is anything you need to do or be
concerned about. Remember that you do not have to physically touch a person for Reiki
to work. If your state laws prohibit touching others, then you do not have to actually
touch them, holding your hands 3-4 inches above them will work.

If you would like information on becoming an ordained minister you can contact The
Universal Light Church at: www.theuniversallight.com . TUL is nondenominational and
will register you as a Healing Minister. If you feel led to practice and teach Reiki then
ordination may be the best way for you to go.

There are certain things that you cannot do as a Reiki Practitioner. You cannot
“diagnose”, “recommend”, “advise”, “prescribe”, etc. All of these terms are to be used
only by Licensed Medical Doctors, and unless you have a traditional Doctors Degree you
need to remove these terms from your vocabulary. You are a spiritual, energy or holistic
healer, which ever you decide to call yourself. You do not need to know what someone
is suffering from to offer healing to them, nor do you need to know which things they
should take that will cure their condition.

©2008 Mary Morgan Tailored Life Coaching

It is legal to teach others how to maintain health and to stay healthy. As long as you do
not attempt to cure diseases you should have no trouble if you feel led to learn to teach
Reiki or to use it for healing others.

Ethically Speaking…

Reiki requires that you touch another person, not just with your hands but also with
energy. You are sharing the loving energy that God has made available to all of us. Many
that will come to you for healing are vulnerable, either physically or emotionally. You
must maintain their respect as well as their confidentiality. It is very important that you
do not violate the trust they have in you.

The following ethical concerns are things you should be aware of since you may face
these at some point while practicing Reiki. Although each of these is discussed
throughout this course in various places I wanted to put them all together in one place
for you to refer back to as often as needed.

Always ask permission prior to treating anyone. Some people actually do not wish to be
healed, or they do not want you using Reiki on them. Respect their wishes.

All information given to you by people you treat is confidential. Any information
discussed in the Reiki session should stay between the two of you.

When working with children, make sure you have the permission of the parent. That the
parent remain in the room, and that your hands hover above all areas that are private.
You must be very careful with children in this respect as their bodies are smaller than an
adult in most cases, and if you are using the Chakras they are closer together. It is a
good rule of thumb to just not ever touch a child, and to always give Reiki to them with
your hands above and not on them.

Before doing Reiki on someone, walk them through what you do during a session and
where you will be placing your hands. You should also have this information available in
written form and have them sign it agreeing they understand and are ok with what you
have told them. If you use actual touch methods be prepared in case they ask that you
don‟t actually touch them. Have in writing another form stating that there will be no
physical contact. Always make sure that you explain both ways and let them decide
which they prefer.

Always respect touch and boundary issues for people. There is never a reason to have a
client disrobe for a Reiki Session. It is never ok to touch a client in a private area. Hover
your hands above such areas when necessary, being very careful not to make contact.
This applies whether you use the hands-on method or not for other areas of the body.

Do not ever diagnose or promise that you can heal someone. Always explain to people
that Reiki sessions are not a guarantee for a cure, and are not a substitute for
appropriate medical care. Have this disclaimer in writing and signed also. Never suggest

©2008 Mary Morgan Tailored Life Coaching

that anyone deviate from a prescribed treatment or medication or interfere with a
treatment plan of a licensed health care provider.

Always suggest referrals to a licensed medical or psychological professional when

appropriate. Do not attempt to diagnose or do therapy with people if you are not
licensed to do so. If someone tries to force you into doing this, make the referral and ask
them to not return to you until they have been cleared to do so by a
medical/psychological professional, in some cases it may be appropriate to require a
medical release signed by their doctor.

Some people ask whether or not they should charge for Reiki sessions. That is entirely up
to each individual. If you are in a position to give Reiki Sessions for free then do so, but
if not and you need to charge, please keep the prices fair. As I mentioned before, you
can also accept donations if you are in a position to do so.

Start off by giving free sessions to friends and family to gain your confidence before you
decide if you are going to charge and what you are going to charge. When considering
your charges, keep in mind that you are not charging for the Reiki energy you are
charging people for your time and the effort you put forth to learn this method of
healing.

If you are going to make using Reiki for healing as your life work, then you will have to
eventually at some point set a price to charge others for your services. If you wish to
discuss this with me as you work through this course, feel free to email me with your
concerns and questions.

During or after a Reiki session some people have emotional or spiritual releases. Some
exhibit this in many different ways and yet some do not exhibit any signs that they have
had a Reiki session. This is part of the reason it is so important to keep all sessions
confidential, as this may not be something that person wants others to know.

It is your job as a practitioner of Reiki to be there for support in explaining what is going
on. You should always tell people that they may go through a cleansing period after any
session they have. Later on you will be learning what a cleansing period is.

Part of that support is in listening to them, but you do not have the responsibility to
solve their problems, only to listen. Like stated earlier, refer those that need it to the
proper medical or psychological professionals. Do not let your clients talk you into
becoming their “whipping-post” or their “therapist”.

What does Reiki feel like?

I have had many people ask me what does it feel like to give or receive Reiki. The only
answer I have is that it is different for each person. Some people say that while giving
Reiki their hands are warm or tingly, and others say that they feel nothing different in
their hands. Yet others report seeing bright colors, feeling vibrations or hearing sounds
while giving or receiving sessions. You do not have to have physical evidence of the Reiki
to believe that it works. Actually you really don‟t have to believe it works even, it just
does.

Although there are at times one or more physical sensations associated with Reiki, it is
most common for people to feel something deeper on a
more emotional or spiritual level. This goes for both
giving and receiving Reiki. People have expressed that
they felt everything from a deep sadness over past
memories resurfacing to feeling a great exuberance or an
overwhelming sense of joy. All of us are different and
while many do feel something on this level there are still
many that may not feel anything. Not even all of your
own experiences with Reiki will be the same.

I personally experience warmth and tingling in my hands every time I give Reiki, however
my resulting feelings when receiving Reiki have been different each time. These
differences occur even when performing self-healing. Just know that Reiki is all good
and cannot ever do any harm. Therefore, regardless of what you do or do not feel know
that the Reiki is working for the greatest good for everyone involved.

As you are giving Reiki to yourself and others you must learn to let go and let the energy
do its work. You do not need to be worried with how it does or should feel to you or
others, nor do you need to worry with the outcome. Reiki is an intelligent energy that
comes from God, therefore it will “know” when, where, how much and if healing is
needed. Let the Reiki do its job and you do yours, of just being the conduit for the
energy to be channeled through.

Chakras

For the purposes of Reiki Level 1 I will briefly go over the Chakras, what they are and
where they are. The word Chakra itself is a Sanskrit word meaning “wheel”. Chakras are
the energy centers in our bodies. These seven centers, each with a specific color and
function associated with it, are what process the life force energy in us.

I would like to point out that working with Chakras is very basic in Reiki. You will not be
tuning, changing, clearing, unblocking, etc. your Chakras, or anyone else‟s, with what
you are learning here. Chakras are very complex and it takes many years of study and
training to be able to manipulate them.

In traditional western style Reiki the Chakras are where all the hand positions are held.
However, in other forms of Reiki there are more hand positions and places to use them.

For now we will concentrate on just the Chakras. All of them are located in the center
of the body and can be reached from the front or back of the body. The following table
will explain the basics you need to know about the Chakras.

I teach Chakras and how to position your
hands on or above them, rather than using
the “Healing Guide” that is thought to be
given to beginner students by Usui-Sensei.
The reason behind this is the hand positions
originally taught were given as locations to
heal certain diseases, ills, etc. Since a
person cannot treat, cure or diagnose
specific diseases, ills, etc. in the US
without a license to practice medicine, I
have chosen to use the more generalized
methods of overall spiritual energy healing.

If you are interested in the historical value

of seeing what is thought to have been
originally taught there is a translation on

Hand Position and Placement

Hand positions are the same for self-healing and healing others. You also will hold your
hands the same way regardless of whether you are touching the body or holding your
hands above it. This makes it much easier to learn and then to remember.

Start off by holding your hands in front of you, palms away from you, fingers together,
and thumbs tucked close to your hand. When giving Reiki you will hold your hands in this
manner with your palms slightly cupped and facing towards the area you are directing
the energy. During a session you will start at the top of the head and place your hands
on/above each Chakra, working down from the top, putting your hands on the knees and
then on the soles of the feet last.

In some instances you will feel like you want to place your hands in other places, such as
over and arm, leg, etc. In those instances hold your hands in the same position that you
use for the Chakras. After you practice this several times, it will no longer feel weird or
awkward to you.

Cleansing Period

Some people go through a cleansing period after Reiki Attunements and Healing Sessions.
This period is different for everyone. Some people have reported getting a cold or flu
like symptoms. Others feel emotionally or spiritually drained or charged. While yet
others feel nothing at all. There are a few people that even report feeling dizzy or light-
headed immediately after a session.

When you begin to give Reiki sessions to others make them aware of what they may or
may not feel. Suggest to others that they avoid red meats, alcohol, nicotine, and
caffeine for about a week after a Reiki session, especially if they are experiencing any
problems. Also, suggest they increase their daily water intake, as this does help to flush
the system.

Be aware of these things during your self-healing sessions. Since for the first 45 days you
will be in an adjustment period you will already be drinking plenty of water and trying to
limit the intake of alcohol, nicotine, red meats and caffeine; you should not have has
many problems as others may. Please discuss with me immediately any and all problems
you experience.

Other Reiki Masters and Teachers teach that there is no such thing as a cleansing period.
Some believe that people will only experience these things if you tell them that they
will. I do not totally agree with that view point, as I have had people tell me they are
experiencing things of this nature without me telling them prior to a session that they
may. On the other hand I do also believe that some people will tell you they are
experiencing things they are not really, just from the power of suggestion.

As you get to know those you are working with and as you learn more about Reiki you can
decide this for yourself.

When to give Reiki

Many people ask when should they give Reiki or when should they not give Reiki. My
answer to that question is simple, give Reiki as often or as little as you want, and for
whatever you feel drawn. Reiki is a good and intelligent energy. It is the unconditional
Love that comes from God to us, and cannot do harm, as I said before. So as far as I am
concerned you can give Reiki for everything, but use common sense if the person
obviously needs medical attention urge them to get it.

I have seen where other teachers tell their students that there are times when they
should not give Reiki. They say if the giver is not feeling well or this stipulation or for

©2008 Mary Morgan Tailored Life Coaching

that reason; or if the receiver has an infection, or this or that: then Reiki should not be
given. For the reason I stated above I do not buy into this. I was taught that Reiki is
always good and can do no harm; after working with Reiki and further research, it is what
I believe to be the correct way.

Just be aware that if someone has a serious problem they do need to see a medical
professional. If someone comes to you and asks you to give them a mini session because
they have a headache, then fine do so. If, on the other hand, they have an ear infection,
you should tell them to seek medical attention. You may also want to do a session with
them before and after they go to the doctor, but they definitely need a doctor; because
you cannot cure infections.

Reiki is not a substitute for common sense, good judgment, or medical treatment. Just
as with any other method of healing you should combine it with these three things to
bring about over all good health.

Preparing for your Attunement

First I want to explain that I am not “giving” you Reiki with this attunement. You already
have it; we are all born with it. This attunement simply makes you aware of the Reiki
energy that you already possess and the teachings in this course will show you how to use
that awareness. Keep that in mind while preparing for your attunement and when
practicing Reiki on yourself and with others.

With that said; set aside a time when you can be free from distractions for 30 minutes.
Make sure you are comfortable, either sitting or laying down. Prepare yourself and the
area about 5 minutes prior to our appointment. You may choose to light candles, play
very soft music, etc. However, none of those things are needed, and would only help you
to relax should you choose to use them.

We do not need to use the phone or computer since our connection is through God. Once
you have prepared your area and are comfortable, set your intention to receive this
attunement. Then all you have to do is lay back and enjoy the energy. You may or may
not feel anything. It doesn‟t matter. The attunement will still work.

If you have time after your attunement I suggest you take another 30 minutes and do
your first self-healing session. If you do not have the time right then, try to do your first
session for yourself as soon as you can, then begin your 45 day adjustment period.

Please keep in mind when you schedule your appointment that I am on the east coast of
the US. When you contact me to schedule the appointment have the time difference

already figured out, I suggest you use the convertor at this site:
http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/converter.html , and when scheduling tell me
the time in my time zone as well as the time in your time zone. My schedule is
somewhat flexible, but please, pick at least two different times that would work best for
you. I will choose the best time for me and respond to you confirming the date and time.

If for any reason you cannot keep to the appointed time I need to know at least 2 days in
advance in order to keep my schedule organized. If you fail to notify me, and fail to
keep the appointment I will only re-schedule with you one time. If you again fail to
notify me or to keep the appointment I will be forced to ask you to seek another Reiki
Teacher. If a true unforeseeable emergency comes up, let me know as soon as possible
so that we can reschedule your attunement.

Assignment 1

1. Set up a time with me to have your Level 1 attunement, if you haven‟t already. Use
this email address: tailoredlifecoaching@gmail.com to set up your attunement and for all
correspondence throughout the rest of your course. If you have questions about
preparing for your attunement let me know when you send me the times you are free.

2. Write a paper explaining why you want to learn Reiki, and what you expect to gain
from learning Reiki. Include things such as; what problems or issues you are having or
what problems or issues others may be having you think Reiki will help with. Describe
what your attitude towards Reiki is now. You can also answer these questions if they
apply and will help you with writing this paper. Are you healthy over all? Physically?
Mentally? Spiritually? Are there changes you want to make in your life? If so, what are
they?

This does not have to be a formal paper, you can write it in the form of a letter or email
if that makes it easier for you. Most importantly though write about you and why you
want to learn Reiki. Email this paper to me when you finish it, telling me what day your
45 day adjustment period will start on.

Once you have received your attunement and have emailed your paper to me, you can
move on to the next section.

Set your Intention

Prior to any healing session you must set your intention. This allows you to “tap” into
the energy that is there and to relax and clear your mind of distractions. I suggest that
you put your hands in front of you in the Gassho position, or prayer position, clear your
mind, close your eyes, and then focus completely on what your
intention for this session is. If you cannot set your focus on a
specific intention you can just say “Reiki”. Other examples of
what you could set your intention to are:

May _____ find the source of their problem.

Gassho Position,
May______ be healed of their problem. Prayer Position

Let Reiki flow through me for the greater good of all concerned.

You may say anything else that may feel or sound right to you, just be very careful in not
naming a specific problem or set of problems, as this can be misconstrued by some as a
diagnosis.

Importance of Self-Healings

Giving Reiki to yourself is very important, as you begin and even when you are
experienced. Having a set schedule of self Reiki healings is a good idea, daily sessions
would be best. You should set aside a time and place for your self-healings so that you
will have no distractions. You can never give yourself too much!

Doing self-healing also allows you to practice as you get going and are learning to use
Reiki. Some people are embarrassed to touch themselves, if you are, you will also
probably be embarrassed to touch others, and it will show. Just as with your clients, you
do your own sessions with your clothes on so that you are used to this.

If, after your initial adjustment period, you can‟t do regular sessions with yourself
because of your schedule or small children then do what you can when you can. You can
do little mini session either before or after taking a shower or bath, right before
bedtime, right after you wake up, or even while taking a break at work.

If you feel weird at first, that is ok, you will get used to it. Most people often are
uncomfortable with any kind of touch and one reason you need to do these self-healing
sessions is so you get comfortable with touch. When giving Reiki to yourself pay
attention to where your hands are and that you are not applying pressure. Our hands

©2008 Mary Morgan Tailored Life Coaching

should never push down or apply any type of pressure, as this could be misconstrued as
massage.

As you actually start to give Reiki, I will ask that you focus on just you for the first 45
days, if at all possible. This will give you the time needed to get used to the Reiki,
experiment with hand positioning, and start to feel more confident with yourself and
your ability.

Reiki Sessions for Yourself

Start each session, even mini-sessions, by stating your intention. Say a prayer along with
your intention if you are inclined to do so. After setting your intention and saying your
prayer you are ready to continue on with the session.

Place your hands on top of your head, crown chakra, and imagine your connection to the
Source of Reiki. Depending on your beliefs this can be done however is best for you. For
some it helps to visualize this connection as a “string” running from
the Source to the crown chakra. Focus on and “feel” the energy
going from your crown chakra into your palms. Focus on this for a
few minutes, and then visualize the energy coming out from your
palms.

You are supplied Reiki energy continually through your crown chakra
Crown and you focus and direct it with the palms of your hands. The
important thing is to allow yourself to just be, don‟t worry about the
outcome, don‟t focus on anything other than the intention you have already set, just let
the energy flow through you; remember that you are not doing the healing you are just
the conduit.

Once you have worked with Reiki for a while this will become easier, and you may even
start to be aware of the energy all the time. But, this is a good way to always start a
session with yourself, in order to further clear your mind of everyday things. Think of it
this way; we are not called human DO-ings, we are human BE-ings; so just BE and don‟t
try to DO.

For the hand positions and the order to do them in see the section after the Final Exam
titled: Hand Positions for self-healing

After you get more comfortable with working with the Reiki you can choose to use these
positions or others as you see fit. You do not have to always follow this list as an
absolute. If your leg hurts then give it Reiki, if your arm hurts then give it Reiki. These

©2008 Mary Morgan Tailored Life Coaching

are just positions to give you guidance and get you started; however, many practitioners
continue to use these positions on themselves and others even after becoming more
familiar with the Reiki energy.

Hold each position for about 4-5 minutes, unless you feel drawn to hold the position
longer or drawn to moving to a new position quicker. Do what feels right to you during
each session.

Make sure that you practice picking your hands up completely before moving to the next
position or area. Some like to assume the Gassho position in between each area to
ensure they have removed their hands completely. It is important to remove your hands
completely when working with someone else because if you slide or drag your hands
across the body it can be taken as a massage technique and without a license for
massage, that motion is illegal. That is why you need to practice this way to start with;
once you are more comfortable with using Reiki and giving sessions to others you can do
your own sessions in whatever manner you wish.

You may want to end your session with a prayer, meditation, or an affirmation. You may
simply wish to give thanks and show gratitude for the energy you were allowed to use.
Whichever seems most fitting to you and your beliefs. Remember that using Reiki energy
is a gift, and all gifts deserve to be properly received and thanks given for.

You should write your experiences in your daily journal, or take notes on how each
session differs from the previous sessions. This will give you something to look back on as
you continue with learning Reiki. Write in your journal when you try different hand
positions or different areas; giving a detailed description of the results, so that you can
determine over time what you feel works best and what doesn‟t.

At this point, I want you to concentrate on yourself for 45 days, as mentioned before. It
is best if you complete this self work/adjustment time before you begin working with
others. If you feel the need or a calling to begin to work with others before your self-
work is complete, then by all means follow that calling. However, if you start to become
lax in your self-healing then stop working with others and return to doing just self
sessions for the remainder of the time.

The 45 day adjustment period is mostly just a guideline, and the number of days is what I
have seen with my own students as the average that most end up taking; I did not
arbitrarily pick the number 45. Some teachers use 21 days because that was the number
of days Usui-Sensei was on the mountain before he re-discovered the Reiki energy; as for
why other time frames have been used by others, I don‟t know, it is possible they have
determined that to work best.

©2008 Mary Morgan Tailored Life Coaching

I was taught Reiki by only doing self-work for 21-30 days. I noticed with myself and with
others that I have taught that this time frame does not allow for enough time to
experiment, get into a daily habit, or to get familiar with using Reiki. That is why I have
increased that time to 45 days. Some teachers say 21 days, some say 30, and I have seen
where some teachers make students stick to self healing for six months before letting
them move on to giving Reiki to others.

Once you begin to work with others they may ask you questions that you will need to
already know the answers to. So take these 45 days to prepare yourself and to learn all
you can about Reiki. Use this as a time for learning, healing, and changing yourself into
someone that is knowledgeable on the subject of Reiki. You by no stretch of the
imagination are to learn all there is to know in 45 days; however, this will give you a
good foundation.

I was taught that this period of time is the cleansing period and I have seen that many
teachers teach this. I have decided to teach this as an adjustment period because there
is more going on than just cleansing. You are adjusting to yourself in more than just
physical, emotional and spiritual cleansing. Although, you may still display some of the
same problems experienced during a cleansing period, but you may have them after each
session or for a longer time frame than those that have had only one session.

Assignment 2

If you plan to use Reiki to help others then you must first use it to help yourself, so
please take the time to do this assignment in its entirety and take it seriously. This next
45 days are set aside for you to practice and to heal yourself. Set aside at least 30
minutes each day for your self-healing sessions, knowing that some may take less time
and some may take longer.

If you are trying to figure out where in your schedule you are going to pull this half an
hour from, then you may want to also rethink why you wanted to learn Reiki. If you are
too busy to spend 30 minutes on healing yourself everyday for the next six weeks, this
may not be the right path for you to choose at this time in your life.

While you are going through this adjustment period try to avoid caffeine, nicotine, red
meats, and alcohol. If you simply cannot cut those things out of your life completely or
just do not want to do so, then try to limit your intake levels of these four things as much
as you can. Also, while adjusting you should drink plenty of water each day, and get as
much rest as you can.

©2008 Mary Morgan Tailored Life Coaching

When you finish with the 45 days write another paper. Write about your self-healing
sessions. List any concerns you had or still have. Have any of your thoughts changed
since you started your self-healing sessions? Describe how you are feeling now. Share
with me all that you feel inclined to share. Use this opportunity to ask me questions or
bring up any problems that you had that have not already been resolved. If you don‟t
feel any different or didn‟t feel anything during your sessions, then be honest, write
about that also.

If you decided to use a journal during this 45 days, that would be a good place to start in
writing the second paper.

If you feel that you are ready to move on in your study of Reiki prior to finishing the 45
days of adjustment, email me, and we can discuss your reasons for feeling this way. It is
very possible that you may not need that long, not everyone does. On the other side of
that, if you feel you need more than 45 days, let me know and we can discuss that also.

These time frames are guidelines not strict set in stone rules. Each person is different
and therefore this is to be done at your pace, not mine and not someone else‟s. We can
work through this at your pace.

When you have completed the second paper email it to the same email address you have
already been using. Then move on to the next part, which is using the hands-on method
on others.

Hands on Sessions for Others

Now that you have completed your adjustment period and self work, you are ready to
move on to doing Reiki for others. Sharing Reiki with others is wonderful, but you should
start with asking family and close friends to volunteer to give you experience working
with others. The reason for this is you will be more relaxed and comfortable with people
you know.

Be aware that if your kids volunteer to let you practice on them, they may not sit still as
long as you would like, and many of the sessions will not be complete. Do not get upset
with them, as children soak up the energy much faster than adults and feel like they are
“done” before you think the session should be over.

When giving Reiki to others both of you need to be as relaxed as possible. If you are not
relaxed it is harder to open yourself as a channel for the energy to flow through. To
ensure the other person is as relaxed as possible have them either lay down or sit in a
reclining type chair. It is best to use a massage table, or an actual recliner, but if you do
not have either one of these that is fine, use what you have.

Remember that Reiki is a type of energy, and will work from the front or back of the
body. You may have others either lay on their front or back, whichever is most
comfortable for them. Some people like to have a blanket over them during sessions, so
have a freshly laundered one available to offer.

Be mindful of the close proximity you will be in with the other person. Do not wear over
powering scents, as some may be allergic or simply find it over bearing and therefore
cannot relax. If you smoke or drink coffee; either brush your teeth or have gum or mints
handy right before each session, so as not to offend the other person. Having the gum or
mints prior to each session is not a bad idea even if you do not smoke or drink coffee.

Depending on where you are going to place the person receiving the session, you may
choose to stand or use a chair with wheels on it. It you are standing you will be freer to
move around their body as needed. If you are not comfortable standing and have
decided to use a chair, one without arms works best.

Make sure to prepare the area prior to the session so that you do not keep the other
person waiting. If you are using candles, incense, music, etc.; have it already set up.
Remember though that some people have allergies, so make sure that you inquire about
anything you plan to burn or smolder prior to lighting it. Also, some people may be too
distracted or uncomfortable with certain types of music so ask about your selection of
music before beginning the session. The key to doing all of this prior to starting the
session is to have no interruptions during a session.

©2008 Mary Morgan Tailored Life Coaching

Sometimes when you are first beginning to give Reiki sessions, and are practicing on
family and friends, others will want to “hang-out” and watch. Try to discourage this.
Not only could it make you nervous, it can be distracting in other ways for both you and
the receiver. Treat these practice sessions just as you would real sessions with real
clients in the future, and make sure you keep the confidentiality of the person you are
giving Reiki to.

Look back over the legal and ethical areas previously discussed. Make sure, even with
friends and family you follow the guidelines. This will give you practice so that you do
not forgot anything when working with others that you may not know as well.

Remember that you do not have to touch a person for Reiki to work. If either of you feel
uncomfortable with touching then just hold your hands a few inches from their body.

It is not necessary to remove any of your jewelry or theirs for Reiki to work. However,
do be mindful of your jewelry so that it doesn‟t get tangled in their hair or clothing when
doing the hand positions on or near the head or neck. Also, it is a good idea to not wear
bracelets that dangle too much as this may distract the other person. Along these same
lines, be mindful of any piercings or jewelry the other person may be wearing that could
get caught on your hands as you perform the various hand positions.

It is best to keep talking to a minimum during the session. However, if you and or the
receiver feel the need to talk do so. The key here is to not let the session go by while
either of you are endlessly chattering about things that are not related to the session.
This takes away your concentration in what you are doing and can prevent you from
being open enough to allow the energy to flow through you.

You can suggest to the receiver that they may want to close their eyes during the
session, but leave the decision to do so up to them. Likewise, you may want to close
your eyes during the session, but if you feel you‟d rather leave them open, that works
too.

Go through the same steps that you have been going through in your self-healing sessions.
Set your intention, and then open yourself to the Reiki energy. When doing sessions for
others it is a little uncomfortable for you both if you take the time to place your hands
on your own crown chakra to do this. An alternate way of opening yourself is to hold the
Gassho, prayer, position a little longer setting in your mind your connection to the
Source, the energy entering your crown chakra and flowing out through your hands.

Starting with the crown chakra, move from position to position in order. Remember to
hold your hands in each position for a few minutes to allow the Reiki to do its work. It is
also important to remember to complete each position, lift your hands completely, and

©2008 Mary Morgan Tailored Life Coaching

then reposition them at the next area. Remember dragging, gliding or sliding your hands
could be misinterpreted as massage.

For the hand positions and the order to do them in see the section after the Final Exam
titled: Hand Positions for healing others

When you finish with the root chakra, move to the knees; place one hand on/above each
knee after a few minutes move to the feet. If the person is in a position where you can
reach the soles of their feet; place one hand on or near the sole of each foot. If the
person is sitting in a chair and their feet are on the floor; place one hand on/above the
top of each foot.

Just like when you do Reiki sessions for yourself, you can choose to use other hand
positions as you see fit. You can position your hands on/above the receiver‟s arms, legs,
hands, etc. if you feel drawn to do so. You can do this in any order that feels right to
you.

After you have finished with all the hand positions you feel necessary, you should sweep
the receivers aura of negative energy that may be left over. To do this, hold your hands
slightly above the receiver‟s body, with your palms facing down. Starting at the head
and working down, brush the aura. When you reach the feet, flick your hands towards
the ground, with a motion like you are shaking water from your fingers. This motion will
also release any energy exchanged between the two of you during the session. Some
people like to wash their hands in cold water after sessions, to break the energy
connection.

When you are finished with the session remember to give thanks for the energy. You can
enter into prayer or mutual meditation with the receiver if that is what you both desire
or you can simply give the thanks. Some practitioners of Reiki like to sit and socialize
with each client for a few minutes after a session. If this appeals to you, you may want
to have on hand water or some herbal tea to offer for refreshment.

Throughout all of your sessions, remember that you are not the healing factor; you are
just the conduit for the Reiki to flow through. If you are too concerned with the
outcome or if you try to direct the energy you may feel worn out or tired after a session.
In this case, just do a short Reiki self-healing session, and relax and let the Reiki do what
it does.

Assignment 3

After learning how to do hands on sessions with another person you need to practice it.
Over the next month I want you to give at least six Reiki Sessions and record your
experiences and results. For this assignment I want you to use a different person for
each session so that you get used to giving Reiki to others and not get comfortable with
just one person.

If you do not have six willing volunteers, let me know. But, do the six sessions even if it
is the same one or two people.

If you choose you can do more than the six sessions. If you want to fill out the client
studies for more than six and have me look over them, that is fine, just email those to
me along with the original six that are required.

If you have any questions or concerns that arise while doing these practice sessions,
contact me with them at the time, or record them on the client studies.

Use the following format for each of your client studies. Once you have completed all six
client studies and sent them in move on to the section on working with plants and
animals.

Plants & Animals

If you feel inclined to do so, you can give Reiki sessions to plants and animals also.
Actually, they love it just as much as we do! There is an assignment for this section, and
even if you do not ever plan to use Reiki for plants and/or
animals I require that you work through this section and
complete this assignment.

If you have an allergy that prevents you from doing this work let
me know, but I still want you to read through this section. If
you cannot complete the
assignment at the end, we will
discuss other options for
meeting this requirement.

Plants and animals tend to soak up Reiki very quickly so

you do not need to spend as much time with a session for
them.

Plants take the least amount of time, and there are a

couple different ways to give Reiki to different types of
plants. For potted plants you can place your hands on
the outside of the pot and imagine the Reiki energy
flowing straight into the roots.

For bigger plants and trees you can either stand facing
the plant or tree with your hands held out toward it and
imagine the Reiki flowing into the plant/tree, filling it
up. For very large trees, you can simply place your hands right on the trunk and let the
Reiki flow directly into the tree. There really aren‟t any rules with how
and where to give Reiki to plants so experiment and have fun with it!

Animals have Chakras, just like we do, that can be used as a guide for
placing your hands. Use this picture along with
the chart and picture of the human Chakras
which you worked with before in determining where each
Chakra is on an animal.

Animals all have the same Chakra locations so the places you
would put your hands for a dog would be the same whether you
were giving Reiki to a cat, dog, horse, ferret, or any other four
legged animal.

©2008 Mary Morgan Tailored Life Coaching

Just like with people, animals all respond differently to Reiki. Damara, my Belgian
Teuverin, normally will just lay there and go to sleep and would
just continue to lay there forever if I didn‟t stop. But, there are
times when I have given her Reiki and she acts like it has made her
100 times more hyper than she already is.

My cat, Felipe, on the other hand always go to sleep during me giving

him Reiki. I have also noticed that when he goes to sleep while
receiving Reiki he doesn‟t snore as much as usual.

It is important to note that you should never try to hold your animals
down or force them to be still. Just hold your hands where they will let
you, for as long as they let you. If they get up and walk away, then just
let them do so.

As with plants, experiment with sessions on

animals and have fun!

Assignment 4

For this assignment you can use the same

client study sheet that you used when working
with people. Just fill in what you can or what
makes sense to fill in. Getting the form right
isn‟t important, getting the practice giving
Reiki to plants and animals is the goal here.

Do two plant sessions and two animal sessions. Email the results of these four sessions to
me when you have them completed. Once you have done this, please go ahead and take
the final exam.

Your Lineage

I am not so sure that I feel lineage is that important. I have several reasons for feeling
this way, foremost being that we are all born with the Reiki energy in us, and the only
reason we have Teachers and Masters to attune us is to make us aware of that energy.
Secondly, it is unimportant to me because there are so many different views, opinions,
and teachings out there that all contradict each other, yet supposedly all came from the
same man. Everyone can‟t be right, and it is nearly impossible at this point to determine
who is correct and who is misinformed.

However, I do feel that without having Masters or Teachers to pass on what they have
learned from others and by working with Reiki themselves it would be even more of a
mess than it already is and the art of using Reiki for healing may be lost again, just as it
was before Usui-Sensei re-discovered it.

Please do not take my remarks about lineage to mean that I am disrespectful of this
tradition or that I am disrespecting any that do not share my views. Those are simply
put, my views and mine alone.

Final Exam
Please answer the following questions and return them to me by email, along with the
name you want on your certificate and the address you want the certificate sent to. I
will not email certificates to anyone. You may choose to not receive a certificate and if
that is your decision then let me know and I do not need your name and address.

Please take this exam seriously and do not just copy what I have written in this course as
the answers to these questions, as that does not show me you have learned anything
about Reiki.
