A competition application
Win a holiday for two people for a month in the USA. Spend a week in New York and
then drive across the country from East to West. For their application for the
competition, we want people to write about their lives for a magazine article about
‘Typical lives’.

My name is Melisa Adem and I’m 19 years old. I’m Turkish and I’m from Izmir. Izmir is a
beautiful old city and is famous for its history. I live in a big house with my parents and I
study at the university. At the moment I am studying English. When I finish I want to be a
teacher – I love helping children.

From Monday to Friday I get up at 7:30, have a shower and breakfast and then leave for
university. I usually go by bus and it takes thirty minutes to get from my house to the
university. On the bus I like reading or talking to my friends. At the weekend I get up late,
and I usually help my father in his shop in the afternoon – he sells souvenirs.

In my free time I like going to the beach or taking my dog for a walk. I also love travelling.
Last summer I went on holiday with my boyfriend. We spent three weeks in July travelling
around France and Italy. I can speak Italian, but I can’t speak French. The holiday was
fantastic. We didn’t have a lot of money, so we decided to go camping.

I’m Josh Taylor and I’m 32 years old. I’m from the UK. I’m English, but my parents are
American. They live in Manchester, but I don’t live with them. I live in a small flat in the
centre of Leeds. It’s a city in the centre of England. I work in a factory. I hate my job, but the
money is good.

I left school when I was 16 and travelled around the world for a year. I visited a lot of
different countries. My favourite country was Japan. I had an amazing time there. I really
liked the food. They eat a lot of fish and vegetables.

In my free time I like playing football and going out with my friends. During the week I get up
at five thirty in the morning and leave my flat at a quarter to seven. When the weather is
good I cycle to work, but when it’s cold I go by bus. I’m always tired in the morning because I
go to bed late. I like playing computer games in the evening. It’s a good way to relax.

Example: Melisa is studying English at university.

1 Melisa wants to be a ______ after university.
2 Melisa’s father sells ______ in his shop.
3 Melisa went on holiday to France and Italy with her ______.
4 Josh works in a ______.
