INTRODUCTION

Yellow corn is a cereal plant belonging to the Poaceae family of grasses, and it
produces edible grain. Originating in the Americas, the cultivated crop is one of the
world's most extensively distributed food crops. Corn is utilized as human food, animal
feed, biofuel, and an industrial raw resource.

Corn was originally brought by the Spanish colonizers from Mexico through the
Manila-Acapulco galleon trade. Earliest records of corn cultivation date back to the
1700s, when the Spaniards introduced three crops in Cebu: tobacco, cacao, and corn.

In the Philippines, corn is a vital crop that plays a big role in the economy and
provides a substantial portion of the income for many farmers. After rice, maize is the
second most important crop in the Philippines, where a significant portion of the farming
population depends on it for their livelihood. All income deciles have benefited from the
enhanced productivity and income that maize farmers have experienced as a result of
the use of genetically modified (GM) corn. The nation's maize output has increased and
is still growing because to the usage of Bt corn, which is resistant to stem borer. It has
been discovered that combining organic and inorganic fertilizers increases soil fertility,
corn product production, and corn product quality. Additionally, the advancement of
movable corn mills has an essential element in helping the nation achieve food self-
sufficiency, especially in rural areas. In general, corn is significant in the Philippines
since it supports the nation's economy, way of life, and food security.Because it is a
major agricultural product that contributes significantly to the Philippine economy and is
a key source of

income for many farmers, corn is highly valued in the country. In the Philippines,
maize farming has been essential to the country's economy, supporting around 100
billion pesos a year. Additionally, the maize industry has seen a considerable increase
in productivity as a result of the introduction of genetically modified (GM) yellow corn
varieties, which has improved welfare overall and benefited all income deciles.
Furthermore, it has been discovered that combining organic and inorganic fertilizers into
corn production increases yield, product quality, and consumer acceptance. This
highlights the significance of using the right fertilization techniques to improve corn
farming results. All things considered, grain is essential to the agricultural.

Corn is crop that ideally grows in an area with distinct wet and dry season. The
crops need light to moderate rains for more than three months for better production.
Although dry weather is much favored during vegetative and flowering stage, however
high atmospheric temperature and limited soil moisture have great impact on flower
pollination and corn kernel development. Furthermore, insect pest population build up is
rapid that control measure are no longer effective. On the other hand, changes in
weather pattern due to climate change also posed a threat to corn production especially
on open pollinated varieties.

According to the Department of Agriculture, about 14 million Filipinos prefer white

corn as their main staple, instead of rice, while yellow corn is used to feed livestock.
Corn is also processed into cornstarch, corn syrups, oil, gluten, and used as main
ingredients for various delicacies.

SWOT ANALYSIS

Yellow corn is one of the major crops that the municipality of Sto Niño, South
Cotabato being cultivated and produced. And based on the interview that we conducted
at the area about yellow corn farming they stated the advantages and disadvantages
of planting yellow corn varieties.

FINDINGS

The versatility of corn allows farmers to diversify their revenue streams by selling
corn for different purposes, thereby reducing dependency on any single market.

Yellow corn is rich in essential nutrients such as carbohydrates, fiber, vitamins,

and minerals (like potassium and magnesium), making it valuable for both human and
animal consumption.

Weather condition like rainfall can cause flood that affect the growth and yield of
corn that cause mortality rate and affect the farmers profit.

Research partnerships with agricultural institutions provide access to advanced

research, and expertise, enabling farms to stay innovative and adopt sustainable
practices in corn farming.

Advances in breeding technologies have led to the development of high-yielding

hybrids with improved disease resistance and stress tolerance, enhancing productivity.

Infestations of pests like corn borers, army worms, can significantly reduce crop
yields if not managed effectively.

RECOMMENDATION

The farmers must be registered to (RSBSA) to gain support from the

government and get seeds that have pest resistance and drought resistance and free
fertilizer to less the cost of the farmers.

The farmers must ask some technician nearby in town to visit there farm to give
them some advice about corn farming to learn some basic technique to increase the
crop yield and profit income in corn farming and.

Participate in government-supported training programs to stay updated on best

practices and innovative farming techniques.

I recommended that farmers must listen to the professional that helping them for
their future to became successful some day
5

IMPLEMENTATION PLAN

Partner with seed companies for access to advanced hybrids, conduct on-farm
trials to evaluate performance, and collaborate with research institutions for breeding
programs tailored to local conditions.

Diversify the supplier base to mitigate the risk of disruptions in the supply chain,
while also negotiating more favorable terms with existing suppliers.

Explore mechanization options to reduce reliance on seasonal labor, increasing

operational efficiency and reducing labor costs.

Implement climate-smart agricultural practices such as conservation tillage and

drought-resistant crop varieties to mitigate the impact of climate change on crop
production.
